Abstract Background: The rotational thromboelastogram (ROTEM) has been used in the management of massive bleeding and transfusion strategy. This study investigated ROTEM parameters measured during Cesarean section as predictors for the progression of persistent postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) in parturients with placenta previa.
Methods: This prospective observational study recruited 100 women scheduled for elective Cesarean section after being diagnosed with placenta previa. Recruited women were divided into two groups according to the amount of estimated blood loss: the PPH group (PPH > 1500 ml) vs. the non-PPH group. ROTEM with laboratory tests was performed three times, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative time, which were compared between the two groups.
Results: The PPH and non-PPH groups included 57 and 41 women, respectively. The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve of postoperative FIBTEM A5 to detect PPH was 0.76 (95% CI = 0.64 to 0.87; P < 0.001). When postoperative FIBTEM A5 was 9.5, the sensitivity and specificity were 0.74 (95% CI = 0.55 to 0.88) and 0.73 (95% CI = 0.57 to 0.86), respectively. When subgrouping the PPH group based on the postoperative FIBTEM A5 value of 9.5, intraoperative cEBL was similar between the two subgroups; however, postoperative RBC was transfused more in the subgroup with FIBTEM A5 < 9.5 than the subgroup with FIBTEM A5 ≥ 9.5 (7.4 ± 3.0 vs 5.1 ± 2.3 units, respectively; P = 0.003).
Conclusion: Postoperative FIBTEM A5, with appropriate selection of the cut-off value, can be a biomarker for more prolonged PPH and massive transfusion following Cesarean section by placenta previa.

Abstract Bloch oscillations in nanoscale Josephson junctions with a Coulomb charging energy comparable to the Josephson coupling energy are explored within the context of a model previously considered by Geigenmüller and Schön that includes Zener tunneling and treats quasiparticle tunneling as an explicit shot-noise process. The dynamics of the junction quasicharge are investigated numerically using both Monte Carlo and ensemble approaches to calculate voltage-current characteristics in the presence of microwaves. We examine in detail the origin of harmonic and subharmonic Bloch steps at dc biases

Abstract Nano-sized Ca₂.₈Cu₀.₂Co₄O₉ powders were synthesized by the solution combustion process, using five different fuels, i.e., aspartic acid, alanine, glutamic acid, glycine, and urea. The combustion process lowered both the calcination and sintering temperatures. The sintered Ca₂.₈Cu₀.₂Co₄O₉ consisted of plate-like grains that were favorable for high energy conversion efficiency. In the comparative study of various different fuels, aspartic acid-processed Ca₂.₈Cu₀.₂Co₄O₉ showed an extremely high Seebeck coefficient, thus resulting in an enhanced power factor. The highest power factor value (8.05 × 10⁻⁴ Wm⁻¹ K⁻²) was attained for the aspartic acid-processed sample at 800 °C.

Abstract Computer-aided design (CAD) has become a critical element in the creation of nanopatterned structures and devices. In particular, with the increased adoption of easy-to-learn programming languages like Python there has been a significant rise in the amount of lithographic geometries generated through scripting and programming. However, there are currently unaddressed gaps in usability for open-source CAD tools -- especially those in the GDSII design space -- that prevent wider adoption by scientists and students who might otherwise benefit from scripted design. For example, constructing relations between adjacent geometries is often much more difficult than necessary -- spacing a resonator structure a few micrometers from a readout structure often requires manually-coding the placement arithmetic. While inconveniences like this can be overcome by writing custom functions, they are often significant barriers to entry for new users or those less familiar with programming. To help streamline the design process and reduce barrier to entry for scripting designs, we have developed PHIDL, an open-source GDSII-based CAD tool for Python 2 and 3.

Abstract We report high-fidelity state readout of a trapped ion qubit using a trap-integrated photon detector. We determine the hyperfine qubit state of a single ^{9}Be^{+} ion held in a surface-electrode rf ion trap by counting state-dependent ion fluorescence photons with a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector fabricated into the trap structure. The average readout fidelity is 0.9991(1), with a mean readout duration of 46  μs, and is limited by the polarization impurity of the readout laser beam and by off-resonant optical pumping. Because there are no intervening optical elements between the ion and the detector, we can use the ion fluorescence as a self-calibrated photon source to determine the detector quantum efficiency and its dependence on photon incidence angle and polarization.

Abstract A certain system to overcome high temperature should be introduced for the stable year round cultivation in greenhouses. There are efficient methods to overcome high temperatures in greenhouses such as the ventilation system with shading screen, fan and pad cooling system, and fog cooling system. In the evaporative cooled greenhouse, the heat balance of a fog system is different from that of fan and pad system, but there is no design standard for the fog cooling system separately. This study was carried out to find a means to determine the capacity of ventilation and fog cooling systems. Heat balance equations for the fog cooling system were established and verified by experimental results in a greenhouse. The calculated ventilation rates from heat balance equations showed good agreement with the measured ones. The evapotranspiration coefficient (E value) was the most important parameter affecting the required ventilation rate among input parameters, with the exception of weather data. As the E value increased 1%, the required ventilation rate decreased 1.3%. Therefore the data of E value should be given by various experiments and then design standards and selection guidelines should be provided. The simulation results for the same design conditions showed that the required air exchange rate and evaporating water of the fog cooling system were 5.1 to 7.7% and 6.8 to 9.3% less than those of the fan and pad cooling system, respectively.
