Abstract This paper presents the development and performance analysis of a solar conduction dryer (SCD) used for drying agricultural produce. Compared with other conventional solar dryers, which are mostly based on convection mode, it was found to be more efficient in terms of thermal efficiency, drying time, and drying rate. In addition to increasing the dryer's aperture area, reflectors were placed on both sides, which enhanced its thermal performance. Furthermore, reflectors can also be used as a closing cover to enhance the life of the covering material against rainstorms, hailstones, etc., when the dryer will not be used. The maximum temperature inside the dryer was 77.4 °C and 61.2 °C with and without the use of reflectors during no load conditions, while maximum temperatures inside the dryer with and without the use of reflectors measured 59.1 °C and 51.8 °C respectively during full load conditions. With and without reflectors, the drying efficiency of the developed solar dryer was found to be 59.4% and 50.09% respectively, which are much higher than that of other general solar dryers (∼35%). However, the drying rate varied between 1.525 to 0.005 g of water evaporated per gram of dry matter per hour when reflectors were used and 1.397 to 0.005 g without reflectors. A cost analysis showed that the capital invested for the development of SCD could be recovered in 1.02 years.

Abstract A natural convection solar tunnel dryer of capacity 100 kg was used to analyse the drying kinetics of naturally grown arid vegetable kachri (Cucumis callosus). The moisture reduction was found from 86.10 % to 7.02 % (on wet basis) in two solar days (15 hours). Solar drying curves were estimated using six different drying kinetic models and were compared based on their modeling efficiency. The statistical analysis revealed that Page and Midilli kinetic drying models accurately estimated solar drying characteristics of kachri with a modeling efficiency of 0.971 as compared to other models. Nutritional, microbial, and organoleptic analysis showed that dried kachri product was nutritionally healthy for human consumption. A significant (p<0.01) relationship was found between rehydration characteristics and rehydration time. Techno-economic indicators show that the drying system was economically feasible and could recover investment in 8.70 months. The net carbon dioxide mitigation potential was found 77.05 tons over the lifespan of the dryer.

Abstract The use of biomass cookstoves is widespread in the household sector of developing nations. Still, these stoves are inefficient and emit a lot of pollution, including gaseous pollutants such as CO, particulate matter, and other pollutants, due to insufficient thermal and combustion efficiency. The three pots improved cookstove was developed to enhance cooking efficiency for rural and low-income urban homes to address these issues. This cookstove consists of three burners that enable best heat utilization as it permits cooking on three pots simultaneously. Statistical analysis was made with ANOVA tool and t-test. The results were found significant at 5% level of significance. Moreover, developed cookstove has thermal efficiency and power rating of 34.45% and 1.72 kW, respectively. Typical CO, CO2, PM2.5 emissions were recorded as 8.8 ppm, 628 ppm, and 0.97 μg/m3, respectively based on findings of emission test. Although increased cookstove adoption is critical to addressing the public health issue, efforts to distribute cookstove technologies have been hampered, and adoption rates in many developing nations are reported to be very low. Thus, the policymaker should think about implementing such a cooking system in rural areas that minimizes the amount of fuelwood used and preserve the environment.
