Abstract Background and Objectives: Biofloc culture system has been used in aquaculture as an effective technology for water treatment due to many advantages of being biodegradable and environmentally friendly. This study aims to isolate bioflocculant-producing bacteria antagonistic to pathogenic Vibrio species from Pacific white shrimp ponds in Thua Thien Hue, Vietnam. Materials and Methods: Vibrio isolates were isolated by screening on medium with and without antibiotics. The resistance of Vibrio to antimicrobial agents was assessed by Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC). Bioflocs formed in shrimp cultures were used to screen bioflocculant-producing bacteria. The identification of bacteria was performed by 16S rRNA sequencing. The flocculating activity was measured by a test with kaolin clay suspension. To evaluate the antagonistic activity against Vibrio isolates, an agar well diffusion assay was used. Results: The screening results have found that Vibrio isolates such as V. parahaemolyticus KS02 and V. alginolyticus KS08 from shrimp ponds can be resistant to many antibiotics with the highest resistance rate up to 66.49%. Four bioflocculant-producing isolates were obtained and identified as Bacillus species. Among them, Bacillus velezensis B9 when grown in YPG medium supplemented with 3% sucrose and 0.7% peptone had the highest bioflocculation with an activity of 49.2%. Two isolates of B. subtilis B2 and Bacillus sp. B6 had quite strong antagonistic activities against vibriosis shown in the zones of inhibition on the assay plates with diameters of about 20 mm. Conclusion: The present study has found some Bacillus isolates had bioflocculant-producing efficiency and inhibited pathogenic Vibrio bacteria. These Bacillus isolates will potentially be used as inoculum for bioflocculation to improve shrimp production.

Abstract A bimetallic batch sensor was proposed to assess the corrosion rate of steel reinforcement in concrete in the presence of chlorides under laboratory and marine conditions. The prepared sensor could generate an electric current independently, indicating the corrosion process's intensity. Moreover, this sensor did not require any external polarization, resulting in reducing the device's cost and power consumption. These advantages are very important when using sensors for autonomous monitoring systems away from energy sources. Laboratory tests in an aqueous extract of concrete have shown the possibility of a sensor to detect the transition from a passive state to corrosion with an increase in the concentration of chlorides. Activation was received when 0.010 < CCl ≤ 0.10 mol·dm−3. The boundary between the passive state and corrosion was obtained at a current density of 8.6 ± 0.5 μA·cm−2. The measurement results on the sensor coincided with the data of the anode polarization curves and the polarization resistance method. In addition, the monitoring system based on sensors was tested in the field conditions of Khanh Hoa (Vietnam) for four exposure conditions for nine months. The correspondence of the measured current for sensors with standard monitoring methods was obtained: the half-cell potential and the electrical resistivity. The most intense corrosion occurred for the samples placed in the splash zone or immersed to a depth of 1 m. The coefficient of conversion of the current on the sensor and the corrosion rate by the polarization resistance method for concrete samples was set to 69.9. Therefore, it is possible to use the current value on the sensor to predict the time to structural failure using well-known models based on data on the corrosion rate of reinforcement. The sensors could retain their functionality and integrity after 9 months of field tests. The current findings suggest a continuous monitoring system of the corrosion rate of steel reinforcement in marine conditions for practical applications.

Abstract Non-destructive monitoring methods and continuous monitoring systems based on them are crucial elements of modern systems for the management and maintenance of assets which include reinforced concrete structures. The purpose of our study was to summarise the data on the most common sensors and systems for the non-destructive monitoring of reinforced concrete structures developed over the past 20 years. We considered systems based on electrochemical (potentiometry, methods related to polarisation) and physical (electromagnetic and ultrasonic waves, piezoelectric effect, thermography) examination methods. Special focus is devoted to the existing sensors and the results obtained using these sensors, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of their setups or other equipment used. The review considers earlier approaches and available commercial products, as well as relatively new sensors which are currently being tested.

Abstract Agricultural sectors play an important role in the process of economic development of a country, especially in developing ones. Vietnam is known as an emerging market, which depends directly on agriculture-related activities for their livelihood, in which the issue of rural credit access still remains a confounding problem. The paper focuses on the characteristics of rural credit markets, the determinants of farmer access to the markets, the socio-economic impacts of credit access in Vietnam and briefly comparing with those of some developing countries. This question is addressed by reviewing existing literature and empirical evidence, followed by a comprehensive case study in Vietnam. Comprehensive literature review with secondary data collection and key informant interviews are methods that are applied in this research. The results of this analysis indicate the features of Vietnam markets as participated constraints, government intervention, and segmentation. Other results reveal the significant determinants of credit accessibility. Impacts of credit access on output production, household income, and poverty reduction are highlighted in this paper. Some managerial implications are recommended for households through participation in lending networks; for financial institutions relating to expand target clients as well as capital allocation; and, for policy-makers via ensuring market competitiveness and sustainable development in the long run.

Abstract Background Accurate prognosis is important either after acute infection or during long-term follow-up of patients infected by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. This study aims to predict coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity based on clinical and biological indicators, and to identify biomarkers for prognostic assessment. Methods We included 261 Vietnamese COVID-19 patients, who were classified into moderate and severe groups. Disease severity prediction based on biomarkers and clinical parameters was performed by applying machine learning and statistical methods using the combination of clinical and biological data. Results The random forest model could predict with 97% accuracy the likelihood of COVID-19 patients who subsequently worsened to the severe condition. The most important indicators were interleukin (IL)-6, ferritin and D-dimer. The model could still predict with 92% accuracy after removing IL-6 from the analysis to generalise the applicability of the model to hospitals with limited capacity for IL-6 testing. The five most effective indicators were C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, IL-6, ferritin and dyspnoea. Two different sets of biomarkers (D-dimer, IL-6 and ferritin, and CRP, D-dimer and IL-6) are applicable for the assessment of disease severity and prognosis. The two biomarker sets were further tested through machine learning algorithms and relatively validated on two Danish COVID-19 patient groups (n=32 and n=100). The results indicated that various biomarker sets combined with clinical data can be used for detection of the potential to develop the severe condition. Conclusion This study provided a simple and reliable model using two different sets of biomarkers to assess disease severity and predict clinical outcomes in COVID-19 patients in Vietnam.

Abstract Citrus maxima peel (CMP) was utilized for the green synthesis of multifunctional silver-biochar material (Ag-CMPB). An alternative, cost-effective and eco-friendly technique was performed using the CMP extract as a reducing agent for the biosynthesis of Ag-CMPB material, in which biochar is prepared from CMP residue. Ag-CMPB nanomaterials were characterized by various physico-chemical methods such as XRD, HRTEM, BET, FT-IR, EDX, and PZC. The results revealed the formation of the face-centered cubic structure of Ag with the particle size in a range of 3 − 10 nm and the stacking structure of layers of biochar. Flavonoids and phenolic acids in CMP extract as a reducing agent of Ag-CMPB material. The specific surface area of Ag-CMPB was determined to be 79.2 m2/g with a pore diameter of 22.4 Å. Ag-CMPB showed high efficiency in the short time in removing organic compounds. The adsorption efficiency was recognized in the following sequence for POPs adsorption: Methyl blue > Rhodamine B > Methyl orange, with the adsorption capacities of 95.5, 69.3, and 51.5 mg/g, respectively. The antibacterial activity of Ag-CMPB was evaluated on five bacteria against B. cereus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, S. aureus, and Salmonella by the zone of inhibition and MIC value.
