    Abstract Rationale: We define behavioral sensitization as an augmented response to subsequent dosing after chronic intermittent administration of a drug. However, the biphasic effects of ethanol (EtOH), first stimulatory followed by depressive, make animal models of behavioral sensitization rare.
    Objectives: This study aimed to determine a dose of EtOH that did not depress wheel-running (WR) in CD1 mice and then to develop a model of EtOH-induced behavioral sensitization.
    Methods: For the first part of this study, male CD1 mice (n = 24, 6/group) were administered either phosphate buffer saline (PBS), 0.5 g/kg, 1 g/kg, or 2 g/kg EtOH at a volume of 3 ml/kg, intraperitoneally (IP). Mice were divided into equal groups and received the weight-based dose once daily on Days 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. All mice received a challenge dose of 0.5 g/kg on Day 10. In both parts of the study, mice were habituated to the running wheel for 5 min prior to dosing and wheel running was measured for 10 min after each dose.
    Results: The acute dose-response of EtOH effects on wheel running determined a significant difference between doses in wheel running (p < 0.05), with a post-hoc analysis establishing that 0.5 g/kg EtOH resulted in significantly more WR compared to 2 g/kg EtOH (p < 0.05). The chronic study demonstrated a significant main effect of Day (1 vs. 5 vs. Challenge, p < 0.001) and an interaction between Day and Treatment, with post-hoc analysis determining the effect to be between PBS and EtOH WR on Day 5 (p < 0.05). In addition, Bonferroni post-hoc analysis determined no differences between Days in the PBS condition, but a significant difference in the EtOH condition between Day 1 and Day 5 (p < 0.001) and that difference from Day 1 persisted when comparing to the Challenge Day (p < 0.01).
    Conclusion: After chronic, intermittent, low dose administration of EtOH, male mice showed an increase in activity as measured by wheel running. Therefore, we laid the groundwork for a potentially useful rodent model for EtOH-induced behavioral sensitization.

    Abstract Objective: Produce sold as plastic-wrapped packs of two to four individual items (i.e., produce micro-packs) that are low cost and placed at checkout may appeal to shoppers with budget constraints and provide a second chance to purchase items available elsewhere in the store. This study examined the impact of an intervention that placed produce micro-packs at checkout and promoted them in grocery stores across New Mexico, USA.
    Design: This quasi-experimental study placed produce micro-packs at checkout end-caps in thirteen stores (group 1), with eight stores serving as controls (group 2) from 1 July 2019 through 31 January 2020 (first phase). The intervention was extended to group 2 stores from 1 February 2020 through 30 June 2020 (second phase). Cashiers were directed to upsell the micro-packs to Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children recipients who had unspent cash value benefits for produce purchases.
    Setting: Twenty-one grocery stores across New Mexico.
    Participants: Twenty-one produce items sold as micro-packs in stores from July 2019 through June 2020.
    Results: A random effects model showed that the daily sales of micro-packs increased by 47 % during each intervention period. Group 2 stores had lower sales than group 1 stores during the first phase of the intervention. Once extended to group 2 stores, sales of micro-packs in those stores increased and sales in group 1 stores continued at the higher level.
    Conclusions: Placing produce micro-packs at checkout may increase produce sales and support health promotion efforts by public and private stakeholders.

    Abstract This study presents the first set of data on the removal of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and histamine H2 receptor antagonists (HRAs) and their transformation products in two Romanian wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), as well as the impact of these organic pollutants on freshwater receiving effluents. The research investigated eight target pharmaceuticals and three metabolites using a newly developed and validated Liquid Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method. The combined determination had a range of quantification limits varying from 0.13 ng/L to 0.18 ng/L for surface water and from 0.28 ng/L to 0.43 ng/L for wastewater. All analytes except cimetidine and 5-hydroxy-omeprazole were identified in water samples. The study found similar overall removal efficiencies for both WWTPs (43.2 % for Galati and 51.7 % for Ramnicu-Valcea). The research also showed that ranitidine and omeprazole could pose a low to high ecological risk to aquatic organisms. The findings suggest that the treatment stages used in the two Romanian WWTPs are insufficient to remove the target analytes completely, leading to environmental risks associated with the occurrence of pharmaceutical compounds in effluents and freshwater.

    Abstract Azole compounds are utilized to combat fungal infections in plants to protect them and also used for treating mycosis in humans. The LC-MS/MS method is a technique that combines liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry for analysis of twelve azole compounds from wastewater (influent, effluent) and sewage sludge. The compounds were isolated from waste water using automatic extraction in the solid phase. Sludge samples were dried by lyophilization, after which they were subjected to ultrasound extraction with methanol. The quantification limits ranged from 0.3 ng/L (clotrimazole-CLO and prochloraz-PRO) to 1.5 ng/L (tetraconazole-TEB and penconazole-PEN), for wastewater samples and for sewage sludge, the LOQs ranged from 0.1 ng/g to 0.6 ng/g. High concentrations of climbazole-CLI (207-391 ng/L), tebuconazole (92-424 ng/L), and clotrimazole (6.9-93-ng/L) were observed in influent samples of the 8 urban wastewater treatment plants, followed by fluconazole (49.3-76.8 ng/L), and prochloraz (7.3-72 ng/L). The ∑Azoles had a maximum of 676 ng/L in the Galati effluent, followed by the Bucharest station 357 ng/L, and 345 ng/L in the Braila effluent. The highest value of the daily mass loading (input) level was observed for climbazole, 265 mg/day/1000 in Iasi station, followed by tebuconazole, 238 mg/day/1000 people in the Bucharest station, and 203 mg/day/1000 people for climbazole in the Targoviste station. The daily mass emission presented values between 0.7 and 247 mg/day/1000 people. The highest emissions were observed for climbazole, 247 mg/day/1000 people in Braila station; 174 mg/day/1000 people in the Iasi station and 129 mg/day/1000 people in the Bucharest station. The concentrations of climbazole detected in the effluent can present a high risk for the plants Lemna minor and Navicula pelliculosa. Clotrimazole may present a high risk to the plant Desmodesmus subspicatus and to the invertebrate Daphnia magna. PRO may present high risk to the invertebrate Mysidopsis Bahia.

    Abstract In the field of orthopedics, competitive progress is growing faster because new technologies used to facilitate the work of physicians are continuously developing. Based on the issues generated in the pandemic era in this field, a research study was developed to identify the intention of orthopedic doctors to integrate new medical technologies. The survey was based on a questionnaire that was used for data collection. The quantitative study registered a sample of 145 orthopedic doctors. The data analysis was performed based on the IBM SPSS program. A multiple linear regression model was applied, which analyzed how the independent variables can influence the dependent variables. After analyzing the data, it was observed that the intention of orthopedic doctors to use new medical technologies is influenced by the advantages and disadvantages perceived by them, the perceived risks, the quality of the medical technologies, the experience of physicians in their use, and their receptivity to other digital tools. The obtained results are highly important both for hospital managers and authorities, illustrating the main factors that influence doctors to use emergent technologies in their clinical work.

    Abstract Organophosphate ester flame retardants (OPFRs) are ubiquitous organic pollutants in the environment and present an important preoccupation due to their potential toxicity to humans and biota. They can be found in various sources, including consumer products, building materials, transportation industry, electronic devices, textiles and clothing, and recycling and waste management. This paper presents the first survey of its kind in Romania, investigating the composition, distribution, possible sources, and environmental risks of OPFRs in five wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and the rivers receiving their effluents. Samples from WWTPs and surface waters were collected and subjected to extraction processes to determine the OPFRs using liquid chromatography with mass spectrometric detection. All the target OPFRs were found in all the matrices, with the average concentrations ranging from 0.6 to 1422 ng/L in wastewater, 0.88 to 1851 ng/g dry weight (d.w.) in sewage sludge, and 0.73 to 1036 ng/L in surface waters. The dominant compound in all the cases was tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP). This study observed that the wastewater treatment process was inefficient, with removal efficiencies below 50% for all five WWTPs. The environmental risk assessment indicated that almost all the targeted OPFRs pose a low risk, while TDCPP, TCPP, and TMPP could pose a moderate risk to certain aquatic species. These findings provide valuable information for international pollution research and enable the development of pollution control strategies.

    Abstract Leather and wool waste represent a high concern due to the low level of valorization and circular economy demands for upcycling of biomass resources. Both biomasses can be easily processed as protein hydrolysates and used as functional additives due to the amphiphilic and tunable properties of collagen and keratin proteins. The chemical, physical, and structural investigations of collagen and keratin hydrolysate properties showed that the chelating abilities due to carboxylic groups can be exploited for gypsum retardant additives. The molecular weights and amino acid compositions of three different hydrolysates showed only slight influences on the setting time of gypsum; all three proteins delayed the setting time of gypsum between 60 and 120 min, as compared to the commercial plaster with a 30 min setting time. Higher molecular weight and more carboxylic active groups showed slight improvements in the setting time of mortars. The improved properties of keratin hydrolysate as compared to low molecular collagen hydrolysate were attributed to foaming and conductive properties. The mechanism of mortar setting delaying through calcium ions complexation by protein hydrolysates was shown by electric conductivity evolution of plasters with and without protein additives over time, supported by foaming properties, amino acid, and functional groups' composition. Lower bending strength values for the higher concentration of proteins do not reduce the potential to use the protein hydrolysates as retardant additives in mortar fabrication.

    Abstract Alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is a poorly studied phenotype of alcohol use disorder. Understanding the relationship between allelic interactions and AWS-related impulsivity and aggression could have significant implications. This study aimed to investigate the main and interacting effects of ZNF804A and mTOR on impulsivity and aggression during alcohol withdrawal. 446 Chinese Han adult males with alcohol dependence were included in the study. Impulsivity and aggression were assessed, and genomic DNA was genotyped. Single gene analysis showed that ZNF804A rs1344706 (A allele/CC homozygote) and mTOR rs1057079 (C allele/TT homozygote) were strongly associated with AWS-related impulsivity and aggression. In the allelic group, MANOVA revealed a significant gene x gene interaction, suggesting that risk varied systematically depending on both ZNF804A and mTOR alleles. Additionally, a significant interactive effect of ZNF804A rs1344706 and mTOR rs7525957 was found on motor impulsivity and physical aggression, and the ZNF804A rs1344706 gene variant had significant effects on motor impulsivity and physical aggression only in mTOR rs7525957 TT homozygous carriers. The study showed that specific allelic combinations of ZNF804A and mTOR may have protective or risk-enhancing effects on AWS-related impulsivity and aggression.

    Abstract Purpose: Long time recognized as a cause of lumbar stenosis, degenerative spondylolisthesis has an evolution in interrelation with sagittal balance. This study aimed to assess the role of ALIF in correcting the sagittal balance in patients with degenerative spondylolisthesis.
    Material and methods: Twenty patients aged between 47 and 70 years were operated between July 2011 and September 2014 for degenerative spondylolisthesis by ALIF. The pre-operative and post-operative valid standing full spine radiographs were reviewed retrospectively. Clinical and radiological evaluations were conducted pre-operatively and postoperatively at one year and five years.
    Results: Lumbar lordosis (LL) was measured to 41.16 ± 14.25° pre-operatively and 47.27 ± 11.25° post-operatively (p > 0.05). At one year was 49.76 ± 13.31° and at five years 46.93 ± 9.26° (p > 0.05). Mean gain of lordosis after ALIF at index level was calculated to 8 ± 1.6° [4-12°].
    Conclusions: ALIF offers a good reduction of the slipped vertebra providing good conditions for fusion and is an efficient surgical technique to recreate the sagittal spine balance.
