    Abstract Purpose: The role of fibroblast activation protein inhibitor (FAPI) PET CT scan is not well documented in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) patients. Patients with radioiodine refractory PTC and high thyroglobulin levels need PET/CT scan which is generally done by 18F FDG. In the current study, the diagnostic performance of 68Ga FAPI and FDG PET/CT scans were compared head to head in patients with radioiodine refractory PTC.
    Method: Fourteen patients with negative whole body Iodine scans and high thyroglobulin levels underwent whole body PET scans with, respectively, 120-310 and 145-370 MBq 68Ga FAPI-46 and 18F FDG. SUVmax of the back ground in the blood pool and liver and the hottest, largest and average neck, mediastinum, lung and bone lesions were calculated and compared.
    Result: Ten patients had at least one active (SUVmax>blood pool) lesion similarly in two scans. The liver and blood pool SUVmax values were 1.25(0.2) and 1.7(0.2) in FAPI and 2.65(0.2) and 2.0(0.2) in FDG PET images, respectively. The difference was significant (p=0.001). Standard SUV of the hottest lesion to liver was above 3 in all FAPI scans but in half of FDG scans. Target lesion number and intensity were similar between two PET studies but in a patient out of 5 pulmonary metastatic patients, pulmonary nodules were negative (SUVmax=0.9) in FDG while positive (SUVmax= 3.8) in FAPI images (i.e. 20% patient upstaged).
    Conclusion: FAPI accumulates in the recurrent and metastatic lesions of patients with Iodine refractory PTC at least as well as FDG with particular privileges as lower injected activity and lower back ground.

    Abstract Onion is one of the most valuable vegetable crops in the US. Onion thrips were identified as one of the main threats to the US onion industry. An integrated approach, including host plant tolerance, is required. For this study, four New Mexico State University breeding lines, along with two thrips-attractive cultivars, were evaluated for their attractiveness to thrips. In addition, this study observed thrips population dynamics throughout the growing season and the relationship between onion plant size and thrips attractiveness. The experiment was designed as a randomized complete block design with three blocks, each containing four replications. Thrips-infested bulbs were used to ensure the presence of thrips and thrips-attractive plants were used to ensure equal thrips distribution throughout the field. Ten plants were randomly selected from each plot and thrips and leaf numbers were counted multiple times through the growing season. Plants of NMSU breeding lines were observed to have fewer thrips, be more tolerant to thrips pressure and produce more leaves and larger bulbs than thrips-attractive entries. Early in the growing season, leaf number was not a determining factor in thrips population dynamics. The larger bulb weights of the breeding lines allowed them to maintain their market value. A delay in thrips population buildup in plants of the breeding lines may result in the critical threshold for spraying for thrips being reached later in these lines. This would potentially allow for fewer pesticide applications by growers, increasing growers’ profits and ensuring a more environmentally friendly approach to plant production.

    Abstract Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a key surface component of Gram-negative bacteria, populating the outer layer of their outer membrane. A number of experimental studies highlight its protective role against harmful molecules such as antibiotics and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). In this work, we present a theoretical model for describing the interaction between LPS and cationic antimicrobial peptides, which combines the following two key features. The polysaccharide part is viewed as forming a polymer brush, exerting an osmotic pressure on inclusions such as antimicrobial peptides. The charged groups on LPS (those in lipid A and the two Kdo groups in the inner core) form electrostatic binding sites for cationic AMPs or cations.     Abstract Higher rate of substance use, including cannabis, has been reported in individuals with a history of childhood trauma, but less is known about the association between cannabis use with lifetime history of trauma and chronic stress, and potential gender differences in this association. This study systematically examined this association in a cross-sectional study of 841 individuals recruited between 2007 and 2012 from the community in New Haven, Connecticut. The Cumulative Adversity Index (CAI) was used to measure cumulative lifetime major life events, life trauma, and recent life events and chronic stress. Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ) was used to measure childhood trauma. Current and regular use of drugs were assessed using self-report questionnaires and objectively verified with urine drug testing. Higher rates of childhood trauma as well as lifetime trauma, and major life events were found in cannabis users, compared to non-users. The association between cannabis use with childhood trauma (total CTQ scores) was significant after controlling for age, gender, ethnicity and regular use of alcohol or cocaine. In logistic regression analysis, cannabis use had a significant positive association with major life events and lifetime trauma, but not with chronic stress, controlling for confounding factors including age, gender, ethnicity, and regular use of alcohol and cocaine. When analyzed separately, only in women the association between cannabis use and childhood trauma was significant. These associations point to further assessment of the impact of these gender differences on neurobiology of stress and cannabis misuse risk.

    Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of combined simultaneous photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with collagen cross-linking (CXL) in keratoconus suspects (KCS).
    Methods: This was a retrospective, non-randomized study of KCS patients who underwent combined simultaneous PRK with CXL. The efficacy, safety, refractive outcomes, and corneal wavefront aberration changes were assessed after the surgery and compared with existing preoperative data.
    Results: Fifty-six eyes of 28 patients, including 20 females (71.4%), with a mean age of 30.92±4.09 years, were enrolled. The mean follow-up was 19.46±8.48 months (range: 7-35). At the conclusion of the study, mean uncorrected distance visual acuity LogMAR improved from 0.89±0.44 preoperatively to 0.04±0.09 postoperatively (P<0.001). In addition, a statistically significant corneal flattening was observed postoperatively, with a decrease in manifest refraction. A statistically significant increase was found in higher-order aberrations (P<0.001), horizontal coma (P<0.001), and spherical aberration (P<0.001) compared with preoperatively. Postoperatively, 41% exhibited refractive astigmatism of 0.50 diopter (D) or less; 83.8% showed 1.00 D or less.
    Conclusion: The results of our study indicate that combined simultaneous PRK with CXL can be a safe and effective method for treating refractive instability in KCS patients.

    Abstract Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a key surface component of Gram-negative bacteria, populating the outer layer of their outer membrane. A number of experimental studies highlight its protective role against harmful molecules such as antibiotics and antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). In this work, we present a theoretical model for describing the interaction between LPS and cationic antimicrobial peptides, which combines the following two key features. The polysaccharide part is viewed as forming a polymer brush, exerting an osmotic pressure on inclusions such as antimicrobial peptides. The charged groups on LPS (those in lipid A and the two Kdo groups in the inner core) form electrostatic binding sites for cationic AMPs or cations. Using the resulting model, we offer a quantitative picture of how the brush component enhances the protective role of LPS against magainin-like peptides, in the presence of divalent cations such as Mg²⁺. The LPS brush tends to diminish the interfacial binding of the peptides, at the lipid headgroup region, by about 30%. In the presence of 5 mM of Mg²⁺, the interfacial binding does not reach a threshold value for wild-type LPS, beyond which the LPS layer is ruptured, even though it does for LPS Re (the simplest form of LPS, lacking the brush part), as long as [AMP] ≤ 20 μM, where [AMP] is the concentration of AMPs. At a low concentration of Mg²⁺ (≈1 mM), however, a smaller [AMP] value (≳2 μM) is needed to reach the threshold coverage for wild-type LPS. Our results also suggest that the interfacial binding of peptides is insensitive to their possible weak interaction with the surrounding brush chains.

    Abstract Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are known to attack bacteria selectively over their host cells. Many attempts have been made to use them as a template for designing peptide antibiotics for fighting drug-resistant bacteria. A central concept in this endeavor is "peptide selectivity," which measures the "quality" of peptides. However, the relevance of selectivity measurements has often been obscured by the cell-density dependence of the selectivity. For instance, the selectivity can be overestimated if the cell density is larger for the host cell. Furthermore, recent experimental studies suggest that peptide trapping in target bacteria magnifies the cell-density dependence of peptide activity. Here, we propose a biophysical model for peptide activity and selectivity, which assists with the correct interpretation of selectivity measurements. The resulting model shows how cell density and peptide trapping in cells influence peptide activity and selectivity: while these effects can alter the selectivity by more than an order of magnitude, peptide trapping works in favor of host cells at high host-cell densities. It can be used to correct selectivity overestimates.

    Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate coating of copper and zinc oxide nanoparticles on cotton fabric by using corona discharge in two ways of pre-treatment and post-treatment. In pre-treatment method, cotton fabrics were modified by corona discharge before coating separately with nanoparticles. In post-treatment, cotton fabrics were coated separately with ZnO and Cu nanoparticles before treating by corona discharge. Self-cleaning properties of treated fabrics were determined by staining methylene blue dye. The antibacterial tests, Scanning electron microscopy and FTIR/ATR analysis were carried out to observe antibacterial performance, surface morphology and analyze the surface chemical structure, respectively. Atomic absorption spectroscopy and water droplet adsorption were used for the determination of metal ion content, and water adsorption. Results showed that by pre-treatment method of corona discharge, absorption of copper nanoparticles was increased, and self-cleaning effect and antibacterial performance of copper nanoparticles were higher than post-treatment. ZnO nanoparticles had highest self-cleaning and antibacterial effect by pre-treatment method. By post-treatment method, the photocatalyst activity of ZnO nanoparticles was decreased.
