    Abstract Learning and memory rely on synapses changing their strengths in response to neural activity. However, there is a substantial gap between the timescales of neural electrical dynamics (1-100 ms) and organism behaviour during learning (seconds-minutes). What mechanisms bridge this timescale gap? What are the implications for theories of brain learning? Here I first cover experimental evidence for slow-timescale factors in plasticity induction. Then I review possible underlying cellular and synaptic mechanisms, and insights from recent computational models that incorporate such slow-timescale variables. I conclude that future progress in understanding brain learning across timescales will require both experimental and computational modelling studies that map out the nonlinearities implemented by both fast and slow plasticity mechanisms at synapses, and crucially, their joint interactions.

    Abstract The traditional method for sampling for lead on surfaces uses inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES) to analyze the concentration of lead and other metals on surfaces. This type of analysis is time consuming and costly. Field portable X-ray fluorescence (FP XRF) is another analysis method that is not as accurate as traditional laboratory methods but is more cost efficient and has a turnaround time of less than an hour. The primary goal of this study is to find the best method to increase the level of agreement between the ICP-AES concentrations and the FP XRF concentrations when analyzing lead concentrations on surface wipes. Inverse regression and ratio of the means correction factors were analyzed to try to improve the prediction of ICP-AES concentrations using FP XRF results. Fifty-seven dust wipe samples were analyzed using a split-half design. Half of the samples were used to create the correction factor and the other half were used to test the level of agreement. Linear regression and Bland -Altman plots were used to determine the correction factor that provided the highest level of agreement. A ratio of the means correction factor was determined to be the most appropriate.

However there is a substantial gap between the timescales of neural electrical dynamics (1-100 ms) and organism behaviour during learning (seconds-minutes). What mechanisms bridge this timescale gap?     Abstract How do members of extremist groups think about violence conducted by individual members on the group's behalf? We examine the link between extremism-motivated violence and extremist groups through a case study of misogynist incels, a primarily online community of men who lament their lack of sexual success with women. To learn how misogynist incels talk about mass violence committed by members of their group, we conduct a qualitative content analysis of 3,658 comments relating to the 2018 Toronto van attack, in which self-declared incel Alek Minassian drove a van into pedestrians, killing 10 and injuring 16. We find overwhelming support among self-proclaimed incels for the attack and violence more generally. Incels viewed mass violence as instrumental, serving the following four main purposes: garnering increased attention, exacting revenge, reinforcing masculinity, and generating political change. Our findings indicate the need to examine misogynist incels as a potential terrorist group and male supremacism as a basis for terrorism.

    Abstract Ensembles of neurons are thought to be coactive when participating in brain computations. However, it is unclear what principles determine whether an ensemble remains localised within a single brain region, or spans multiple brain regions. To address this, we analysed electrophysiological neural population data from hundreds of neurons recorded simultaneously across nine brain regions in awake mice. At fast subsecond timescales, spike count correlations between pairs of neurons in the same brain region were stronger than for pairs of neurons spread across different brain regions. In contrast at slower timescales, within- and between-region spike count correlations were similar. Correlations between high-firing-rate neuron pairs showed a stronger dependence on timescale than low-firing-rate neuron pairs. We applied an ensemble detection algorithm to the neural correlation data and found that at fast timescales each ensemble was mostly contained within a single brain region, whereas at slower timescales ensembles spanned multiple brain regions. These results suggest that the mouse brain may perform fast-local and slow-global computations in parallel.

    Abstract Electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography recordings are non-invasive and temporally precise, making them invaluable tools in the investigation of neural responses in humans. However, these recordings are noisy, both because the neuronal electrodynamics involved produces a muffled signal and because the neuronal processes of interest compete with numerous other processes, from blinking to day-dreaming. One fruitful response to this noisiness has been to use stimuli with a specific frequency and to look for the signal of interest in the response at that frequency. Typically this signal involves measuring the coherence of response phase: here, a Bayesian approach to measuring phase coherence is described. This Bayesian approach is illustrated using two examples from neurolinguistics and its properties are explored using simulated data. We suggest that the Bayesian approach is more descriptive than traditional statistical approaches because it provides an explicit, interpretable generative model of how the data arises. It is also more data-efficient: it detects stimulus-related differences for smaller participant numbers than the standard approach.

    Abstract Objective: Individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) are recognized to be among the highest risk patients to experience more severe symptoms of COVID-19, not only due to poor baseline health and associated disparity, but also due to medications prescribed to manage their illness that are known to compromise immunity even further. Clozapine, a gold standard antipsychotic used in the treatment for refractory schizophrenia, is considered to be the antipsychotic with the greatest risk of compromising immunity due to its potential to cause blood dyscrasia, including leukopenia and rarely, but potentially, agranulocytosis. The objective of this study is to determine if there is any potential hematological consequence for the use of COVID-19 messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) vaccines or the impact of active severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in patients receiving clozapine therapy. Since there is controversy over the rate of vaccine hesitancy in patients with SMI, we also examined the rate of vaccine acceptance in our subject population.
    Design: This study was a retrospective chart review conducted at a 160-bed state psychiatric inpatient hospital in upstate New York evaluating the impact of COVID-19 vaccination, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and vaccine acceptance in patients prescribed clozapine.
    Results: Both the administration of COVID-19 mRNA vaccines and SARS-CoV-2 infection did not appear to significantly influence the hematologic values that are monitored by the United States (US) Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ensure safe use of clozapine. When offered vaccination, most patients hospitalized for SMI were willing to accept it.
    Conclusion: With the likelihood of COVID-19 mRNA vaccinations becoming a recommended routine vaccination, requiring periodic boosters, patients receiving clozapine therapy have been observed to not be at higher risk of adverse hematological consequences when the mRNA vaccine is administered. Furthermore, inpatient psychiatry settings should be considered an optimal site of vaccination to improve vaccination efforts in our communities.

    Abstract The scientific progress made in the pharmacologic management of serious mental illness (SMI) has been significant. However, the benefits of medication management must continually be weighed against the risks of adverse effects of the agents prescribed. While many medications pose increased danger of QTc prolongation, which may result in malignant arrhythmia and sudden cardiac death, the combination of medications contributing QTc risk can result in an impact of unpredictable pharmacodynamic magnitude. Pharmacists play a key role in communicating QTc risks to prescribers, however little if any clinical guidance informs clinicians of specific actions to take when initiating or continuing a clinically necessary combination that poses risk. This study is a cross-sectional view of Med Safety Scan (MSS) QT prolongation risk scores, generated from the ranking tool available from the CredibleMeds website, intended to provide greater understanding of overall risk of QT burden to assist in the prescribing of medications to patients with SMI in a psychiatric hospital.
