Abstract The "failed Kondo insulator" CeNiSn has long been suspected to be a nodal metal, with a node in the hybridization matrix elements. Here we carry out a series of Nernst effect experiments to delineate whether the severely anisotropic magnetotransport coefficients do indeed derive from a nodal metal or can simply be explained by a highly anisotropic Fermi surface. Our experiments reveal that despite an almost twentyfold anisotropy in the Hall conductivity, the large Nernst signal is isotropic. Taken in conjunction with the magnetotransport anisotropy, these results provide strong support for an isotropic Fermi surface with a large anisotropy in quasiparticle mass derived from a nodal hybridization.

Abstract Chromel–AuFe₀.₀₇% thermocouples are widely used to measure small temperature differences down to liquid-He temperatures. In this work we present the thermopower S of two chromel–AuFe₀.₀₇% thermocouples over an extended temperature range from 1.5K to 200K in magnetic fields up to 7T. For low temperatures T<4K we find a sizeable field dependence of S even in small fields. Furthermore, a field of 7T affects the thermopower considerably up to 200K. Thus, our data demonstrate a significant field dependence of the thermopower of chromel–AuFe₀.₀₇% thermocouples in an extended temperature and field range compared to previous works.

Abstract We present the evolution of the low-temperature thermodynamic, galvanomagnetic and thermoelectric properties of the type-I clathrate Ba8Ni(x)Ge(46-x-y□y) with the Ni concentration studied on polycrystalline samples with 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 6.0 by means of specific heat, Hall effect, electrical resistivity, thermopower and thermal conductivity measurements in the 2-350 K temperature range and supported by first-principles calculations. The experimental results evidence a 2a × 2a × 2a supercell described in the space group Ia3d for x ≤ 1.0 and a primitive unit cell a × a × a (space group Pm3n) above this Ni content. This concentration also marks the limit between a regime where both electrons and holes contribute to the electrical conduction (x ≤ 1.0) and a conventional, single-carrier regime (x > 1.0). This evolution is traced by the variations in the thermopower and Hall effect with x. In agreement with band structure calculations, increasing the Ni content drives the system from a nearly-compensated semimetallic state (x = 0.0) towards a narrow-band-gap semiconducting state (x = 4.0). A crossover from an n-type to a p-type conduction occurs when crossing the x = 4.0 concentration i.e. for x = 4.1. The solid solution Ba8Ni(x)Ge(46-x-y□y) therefore provides an excellent experimental platform to probe the evolution of the peculiar properties of the parent type-I clathrate Ba8Ge43□3 upon Ge/Ni substitution and filling up of the vacancies, which might be universal among the ternary systems at low substitution levels.

Abstract The stiffness of the hadronic equation of state has been extracted from the production rate of K+ mesons in heavy-ion collisions around 1 AGeV incident energy. The data are best described with a compression modulus K around 200 MeV, a value which is usually called "soft." This is concluded from a detailed comparison of the results of transport theories with the experimental data using two different procedures: (i) the energy dependence of the ratio of K+ from Au+Au and C+C collisions and (ii) the centrality dependence of the K+ multiplicities. It is demonstrated that input quantities of these transport theories which are not precisely known, such as the kaon-nucleon potential, the deltaN --> NK+lambda cross section, or the lifetime of the delta in matter, do not modify this conclusion.
