    Abstract This work focuses on the potential impact of climate change on soil erosion in a monsoon-dominated sub-tropical region. Water-induced soil erosion due to extreme rainfall during the monsoon period is a major problem worldwide, from different environmental and socio-economic perspectives. This study region covered (South Bengal) is one of the fertile agricultural belts that produces a good amount of produce and contributes to the country's GDP. However, the rate of agricultural output has decreased rapidly in recent times due to a decline in soil fertility. The monsoon-dominated sub-tropical region has unique characteristics in terms of seasonal temperature fluctuations and the availability of rainfall events. The sub-tropical region is densely populated, with the majority of the population relying on rain-fed agricultural production systems. The declining rate of agricultural production has also established that soil fertility is declining and soil erosion is increasing. Numerous studies show that soil erosion is the major cause of the region's rapidly increasing trend of land degradation. A homeostatic mechanism cannot replace soil erosion, and a gap arises between soil erosion and regolith formation. Extreme changes in land use and land cover, population growth and the lacking support for traditional agricultural practices and management practices can accelerate the rate of soil erosion and its associated reservoir sedimentation in most countries of the tropical and sub-tropical environment. Quantitative information with maximum possible accuracy through validation regarding soil loss can be an essential part of the appropriate and sustainable soil and water conservation planning. The precise aspects of modern day management strategies are soil erosion susceptibility mapping using empirical and semi-empirical models in a GIS platform or the use of probability statistics. The main objective of this work is to propose the most suitable development strategies considering the amount of soil erosion for the present and future periods. Extensive field research has been done to identify the support practice factor that the local stakeholders adopt in this region. .

    Abstract Groundwater is the most reliable source of freshwater for human well-being. Significant toxic contamination in groundwater, particularly in the aquifers of the Ganges delta, has been a substantial source of arsenic (As). The Sundarban Biosphere Reserve (SBR), located in the southwestern part of the world's largest Ganges delta, suffers from As contamination in groundwater. Therefore, assessment of groundwater vulnerability is essential to ensure the safety of groundwater quality in SBR. Three data-driven algorithms, i.e. "logistic regression (LR)", "random forest (RF)", and "boosted regression tree (BRT)", were used to assess groundwater vulnerability. Groundwater quality and hydrogeochemical characteristics were evaluated by Piper, United States Salinity Laboratory (USSL), and Wilcox's diagram. The result of this study indicates that among the applied models, BRT (AUC = 0.899) is the best-fit model, followed by RF (AUC = 0.882) and LR (AUC = 0.801) to assess groundwater vulnerability. In addition, the result also indicates that the general quality of the groundwater in this area is not very good for drinking purposes. The applied methods of this study can be used to evaluate the groundwater vulnerability of the other aquifer systems.

    Abstract The vulnerability of groundwater in the coastal regions in terms of As, F⁻, and NO₃⁻ exposure is growing rapidly. Hence, the present study focused on assessing groundwater quality, ecological richness, and HR in the coastal districts of West Bengal by applying field-based CD, GWQI, ERI, and HRI techniques. After assessing the GW vulnerability, it is stated that approximately 40–50 % area of the two selected coastal district's GW is poor to very poor in quality, the ecology of GW is threatened, and human health is faced serious risk for both dry and wet season. The Wilcox and USSL diagram verified that nearly 50 % GW aquifers of coastal district of West Bengal are not fit for irrigation and drinking. The findings of this study will be beneficial to manage and control groundwater vulnerability in the coastal regions for water scientists, policy makers, and researchers as well in sustainable way.

    Abstract While the implementation of real-time flood prediction and warning systems based on real-time continuous rainfall and streamflow data collection has been implemented in a number of river basins in a number of countries such systems require a reliable network of telemetered rainfall and streamflow gauges within the river basin. Typical of a developing country, the southern part of West Bengal has very few gauging stations with, most stations recording only gauge height data. There is a significant lack of local-level information on rating curves and inundation mapping which can be used for flood management purposes and to identify under what conditions areas of the floodplain need to be evacuated to protect human life. Under these circumstances, stand-alone flood modelling can be undertaken to generate rating curves at key locations and inundation maps which can be used during floods to assist emergency managers implement management actions and to decide when to evacuate communities at risk from rising floodwaters. In this study, the monsoon dominated Dwarkeswar River near Arambag Town, Hooghly District, West Bengal was selected for the prediction of a rating curve and inundation area. The August 2016 flood was simulated using a HEC-RAS (Version 5.0.7) rain-on-grid model. The simulated rating curve and inundation area were validated against the river stage data and flooded area observed in the same year. It was concluded that the model was able to simulate the rating curve and inundation area with an acceptable level of accuracy and that this demonstrated the feasibility of applying this approach to other river basins with a limited number of gauges in order to improve flood management and evacuation practices.

    Abstract Land subsidence (LS) as a major geological and hydrological hazard poses a major threat to safety and security. The various triggers of LS include intense extraction of aquifer bodies. In this study, we present an LS inventory map of the Daumeghan plain of Iran using 123 LS and 123 non-LS locations which were identified through field survey. Fourteen LS causative factors related to topography, geology, hydrology, and anthropogenic characteristics were selected based on multi-collinearity test. Based on the results, five susceptibility maps were generated employing models and input data. The LS susceptibility models were evaluated and validated using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and statistical indices. The results indicate that the LS susceptibility maps produced have good accuracy in predicting the spatial distribution of LS in the study area. The result showed that the optimization models BA and GWO were better than the other machine learning algorithm (MLA). In addition, The BA model has 96.6% area under of ROC (AUROC) followed by GWO (95.8%), BART (94.5%), BRT (93.1%), and SVR (92.7%). The LS susceptibility maps formulated in our study can serve as a useful tool for formulating mitigation strategies and for better land-use planning.

    Abstract This paper discusses various aspects of channel morphology on an ephemeral Dwarkeswar River from the western part of the Bengal Basin. Geologically, it extends from the Proterozoic Granite Gneiss Complex to recent Holocene alluvium, creating three typical geomorphic regions, e.g. dissected plateau, plateau-fringe and alluvial plain. Sixty cross sections from the source to the mouth of the river were surveyed, and the bankfull channel parameters were measured. Consequently, sediment samples were collected and Manning’s roughness coefficient were determined to estimate velocity, discharge and stream power. The exponents of hydraulic geometry (width, depth and velocity) vary significantly with respect to physiographic divisions of the study area. Width, width–depth ratio and channel capacity enlarge up to the plateau-fringe area. Thereafter, reduction of channel capacity, width and W/D ratio has been observed in the alluvial plain area by 81.3%, 87.3% and 91.3%, respectively, which is associated with lowering of sea level, high topographic sinuosity index, extremely elongated basin, very low slope, wide flood plain area and cohesive bank materials. So, channel capacity reduces in the downstream direction and floods became an unavoidable part of this region.

    Abstract This study focuses on the role of topography in downstream changes in channel morphology of a monsoon dominated Dwarkeswar River with sixty cross-sections. Bankfull channel characteristics, flow characteristics, sediment characteristics and channel pattern were analysed with respect to dissected plateau, plateau-fringe and alluvial plain using statistical analysis. There was a significantly positive relation with distance from source and width (r = 0.874), width/depth ratio (r = 0.607) and flow area (r = 0.926) in the dissected plateau, although a significantly negative relation was found in the alluvial plain (width (r = −0.963), width/depth ratio (r = −0.897), and flow area (r = −0.821)). Overall, the channel dimensions diminished in the alluvial area by 6–7 times. In both these cases, TSI values were higher than the HSI. In the PCA-1, topographic factors were more dominant and the role of drainage area, elevation, slope, basin shape and depth of sediment were opposite to each other in comparison with dissected plateau and alluvial plain.
