Abstract Finite-size scaling above the upper critical dimension is a long-standing puzzle in the field of statistical physics. Even for pure systems various scaling theories have been suggested, partially corroborated by numerical simulations. In the present manuscript we address this problem in the even more complicated case of disordered systems. In particular, we investigate the scaling behavior of the random-field Ising model at dimension D=7, i.e., above its upper critical dimension D_{u}=6, by employing extensive ground-state numerical simulations. Our results confirm the hypothesis that at dimensions D>D_{u}, linear length scale L should be replaced in finite-size scaling expressions by the effective scale L_{eff}=L^{D/D_{u}}. Via a fitted version of the quotients method that takes this modification, but also subleading scaling corrections into account, we compute the critical point of the transition for Gaussian random fields and provide estimates for the full set of critical exponents. Thus, our analysis indicates that this modified version of finite-size scaling is successful also in the context of the random-field problem.

Abstract We numerically study the structure of the interactions occurring in three-dimensional systems of hard spheres at jamming, focusing on the large-scale behavior. Given the fundamental role in the configuration of jammed packings, we analyze the propagation through the system of the weak forces and of the variation of the coordination number with respect to the isostaticity condition, ΔZ. We show that these correlations can be successfully probed by introducing a correlation function weighted on the density-density fluctuations. The results of this analysis can be further improved by introducing a representation of the system based on the contact points between particles. In particular, we find evidence that the weak forces and the ΔZ fluctuations support the hypothesis of randomly jammed packings of spherical particles being hyperuniform by exhibiting an anomalous long-range decay. Moreover, we find that the large-scale structure of the density-density correlation exhibits a complex behavior due to the superimposition of two exponentially damped oscillating signals propagating with linearly depending frequencies.

Abstract We study numerically various properties of the free energy barriers in the Edwards-Anderson model of spin glasses in the low-temperature region in both three and four spatial dimensions. In particular, we investigated the dependence of height of free energy barriers on system size and on the distance between the initial and final states (i.e., the overlap distance). A related quantity is the distribution of large local fluctuations of the overlap in large 3D samples at equilibrium. Our results for both quantities (barriers and large deviations) are in agreement with the prediction obtained in the framework of mean-field theory. In addition, our result supports [Formula: see text] as the lower critical dimension of the model.

Abstract We present a study of the landscape structure of hard and soft spheres as a function of the packing fraction and of the energy. We find that, on approaching the jamming transition, the number of different configurations available to the system increases steeply and a hierarchical organization of the landscape emerges. We use the knowledge of the structure of the landscape to predict the values of thermodynamic observables on the edge of the transition.

Abstract The spin-glass transition in a field in finite dimension is analyzed directly at zero temperature using a perturbative loop expansion around the Bethe lattice solution. The loop expansion is generated by the M-layer construction whose first diagrams are evaluated numerically and analytically. The generalized Ginzburg criterion reveals that the upper critical dimension below which mean-field theory fails is D_{U}≥8, at variance with the classical result D_{U}=6 yielded by finite-temperature replica field theory. Our expansion around the Bethe lattice has two crucial differences with respect to the classical one. The finite connectivity z of the lattice is directly included from the beginning in the Bethe lattice, while in the classical computation the finite connectivity is obtained through an expansion in 1/z. Moreover, if one is interested in the zero temperature (T=0) transition, one can directly expand around the T=0 Bethe transition. The expansion directly at T=0 is not possible in the classical framework because the fully connected spin glass does not have a transition at T=0, being in the broken phase for any value of the external field.

Abstract The jamming transition is ubiquitous. It is present in granular matter, colloids, glasses, and many other systems. Yet, it defines a critical point whose properties still need to be fully understood. A major breakthrough came about when the replica formalism was extended to build a mean-field theory that provides an exact description of the jamming transition of spherical particles in the infinite-dimensional limit. While such theory explains the jamming critical behavior of both soft and hard spheres, investigating the transition in finite-dimensional systems poses very difficult and different problems, in particular from the numerical point of view. Soft particles are modeled by continuous potentials; thus, their jamming point can be reached through efficient energy minimization algorithms. In contrast, the latter methods are inapplicable to hard-sphere (HS) systems since the interaction energy among the particles is always zero by construction. To overcome these difficulties, here we recast the jamming of hard spheres as a constrained optimization problem and introduce the CALiPPSO algorithm, capable of readily producing jammed HS packings without including any effective potential. This algorithm brings a HS configuration of arbitrary dimensions to its jamming point by solving a chain of linear optimization problems. We show that there is a strict correspondence between the force balance conditions of jammed packings and the properties of the optimal solutions of CALiPPSO, whence we prove analytically that our packings are always isostatic and in mechanical equilibrium. Furthermore, using extensive numerical simulations, we show that our algorithm is able to probe the complex structure of the free-energy landscape, finding qualitative agreement with mean-field predictions. We also characterize the algorithmic complexity of CALiPPSO and provide an open-source implementation of it.

In particular, we investigate the scaling behavior of the random-field Ising model at dimension $D = 7$, i.e., above its upper critical dimension $D_{\rm u} = 6$, by employing extensive ground-state numerical simulations. Our results confirm the hypothesis that at dimensions $D > D_{\rm u}$, linear length scale $L$ should be replaced in finite-size scaling expressions by the effective scale $L_{\rm eff} = L^{D / D_{\rm u}}$.

Abstract Using the replica approach and the cavity method, we study the fluctuations of the optimal cost in the random-link matching problem. By means of replica arguments, we derive the exact expression of its variance. Moreover, we study the large deviation function, deriving its expression in two different ways, namely using both the replica method and the cavity method.

Abstract Recent numerical studies on glassy systems provide evidence for a population of non-Goldstone modes (NGMs) in the low-frequency spectrum of the vibrational density of states D(ω). Similarly to Goldstone modes (GMs), i.e., phonons in solids, NGMs are soft low-energy excitations. However, differently from GMs, NGMs are localized excitations. Here we first show that the parental temperature T^{*} modifies the GM/NGM ratio in D(ω). In particular, the phonon attenuation is reflected in a parental temperature dependency of the exponent s(T^{*}) in the low-frequency power law D(ω)∼ω^{s(T^{*})}, with 2≤s(T^{*})≤4. Second, by comparing s(T^{*}) with s(p), i.e., the same quantity obtained by pinning a p particle fraction, we suggest that s(T^{*}) reflects the presence of dynamical heterogeneous regions of size ξ^{3}∝p. Finally, we provide an estimate of ξ as a function of T^{*}, finding a mild power law divergence, ξ∼(T^{*}-T_{d})^{-α/3}, with T_{d} the dynamical crossover temperature and α falling in the range α∈[0.8,1.0].
