Abstract Following the stream of increasing scientific interest in condensed-matter systems under ultra-hydrophobic confinement, the present work reports the first incoherent neutron spin echo assessment of the dynamics of water axially confined inside single-wall carbon nanotubes of diameter d∼ 1.4 nm. At the time scale of nanoseconds, two water populations are retrieved, whose relative proportion matches the one expected for a concentric shell + chain arrangement with cylindrical symmetry. The time dependence of the mean square displacement related to the external component is found to be subdiffusive, with peculiar resemblance to segmental diffusion typical of entangled polymeric systems.

Abstract In this work, we discuss an improved detection procedure for the photon-sensitive yttrium-aluminum-perovskite detectors installed on the VESUVIO spectrometer at the ISIS pulsed neutron and muon source. By decreasing the low-level energy threshold of detected photons, we observe an increased count rate up to a factor ∼3, and a decrease of relative error bars and noise of ∼40% and 35%, respectively, for deep inelastic neutron scattering measurements. In addition, we demonstrate how the reported optimization may increase the accuracy in the line shape analysis of neutron Compton profiles, as well as in the application of the mean-force approach to detect the anisotropy and anharmonicity in the single-particle local potential. We envisage that such an upgrade of the detection procedure would have a substantial impact on the VESUVIO scientific programme based on deep inelastic neutron scattering investigations.

Abstract Earth's atmosphere, whose ionization stability plays a fundamental role for the evolution and endurance of life, is exposed to the effect of cosmic explosions producing high energy Gamma-ray-bursts. Being able to abruptly increase the atmospheric ionization, they might deplete stratospheric ozone on a global scale. During the last decades, an average of more than one Gamma-ray-burst per day were recorded. Nevertheless, measurable effects on the ionosphere were rarely observed, in any case on its bottom-side (from about 60 km up to about 350 km of altitude). Here, we report evidence of an intense top-side (about 500 km) ionospheric perturbation induced by significant sudden ionospheric disturbance, and a large variation of the ionospheric electric field at 500 km, which are both correlated with the October 9, 2022 Gamma-ray-burst (GRB221009A).
