    Abstract Proton decay is a smoking gun signature of grand unified theories (GUTs). Searches by Super-Kamiokande have resulted in stringent limits on the GUT symmetry-breaking scale. The large-scale multipurpose neutrino experiments DUNE, Hyper-Kamiokande, and JUNO will either discover proton decay or further push the symmetry-breaking scale above 10^{16}  GeV. Another possible observational consequence of GUTs is the formation of a cosmic string network produced during the breaking of the GUT to the standard model gauge group. The evolution of such a string network in the expanding Universe produces a stochastic background of gravitational waves which will be tested by a number of gravitational wave detectors over a wide frequency range. We demonstrate the nontrivial complementarity between the observation of proton decay and gravitational waves produced from cosmic strings in determining SO(10) GUT-breaking chains. We show that such observations could exclude SO(10) breaking via flipped SU(5)×U(1) or standard SU(5), while breaking via a Pati-Salam intermediate symmetry, or standard SU(5)×U(1), may be favored if a large separation of energy scales associated with proton decay and cosmic strings is indicated. We note that recent results by the NANOGrav experiment have been interpreted as evidence for cosmic strings at a scale of ∼10^{14}  GeV. This would strongly point toward the existence of GUTs, with SO(10) being the prime candidate. We show that the combination with already available constraints from proton decay allows us to identify preferred symmetry-breaking routes to the standard model.

    Abstract Live virus neutralization is the gold standard to investigate immunity. This prospective observational study aimed to determine the magnitude of response against the original B.1 lineage and against the BA.5 lineage six months after the third BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine dose in patients with HIV infection on successful antiretroviral treatment and no previous SARS-CoV-2 infection. A total of 100 subjects (M/F 83/17, median age 54 years) were included in the analysis: 95 had plasma HIV RNA <40 copies/mL, the median CD4+ T cell count at the administration of the third dose was 580 cells/mm

    Abstract We investigated the spike IgG levels of HIV+ patients on antiretroviral therapy six months after they received their second dose (T2) and six months after the third dose (T3) of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine, as well as the influence of different levels of plasma HIV viremia of overall CD4+ cell count and nadir value on the humoral time course. One hundred eighty-four patients were enrolled. The median age was 55 years, the median CD4+ cell count was 639 cells/mm3 and the median nadir value was 258 cells/mm3. On the basis of all tests performed during the study period, persistently undetectable plasma HIV RNA (PUD) was found in 66 patients, low-level viremia (LLV) in 57 and ongoing viremia (OV) in 61. Serum levels of IgG antibodies against a trimeric S-protein antigen were tested with DiaSorin Liaison SARS-CoV-2 TrimericS IgG and the response was classified as optimal (>75th percentile), intermediate (50th−25th percentile) and low (<25th percentile). The frequencies of the three different patterns of plasma HIV viremia (PUD, LLV and OV) were comparable in patients with low, intermediate and optimal IgG response evaluated at T2, with no difference in overall CD4+ cell count or nadir count. At T3, 92.9% of patients achieved an optimal response: T2 response proved to be the most important factor in predicting T3 optimal response in patients with LLV and OV.A nadir value ≤ 330 cells/mm3 had 100% sensitivity in predicting a non-optimal response. In conclusion, we demonstrated the persistence of anti-spike IgG, with high serum levels occurring in most patients six months after the third dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine and a predictive role of humoral response at T2 in subjects with detectable plasma HIV viremia. Immunological alterations related to past immunodeficiency may persist despite immune reconstitution, and the nadir value could be a useful tool for elaborating personalized vaccine schedules.

    Abstract The observed leptonic mixing pattern could be explained by the presence of a discrete flavour symmetry broken into residual subgroups at low energies. In this scenario, a residual generalised CP symmetry allows the parameters of the PMNS matrix, including Majorana phases, to be predicted in terms of a small set of input parameters. In this article, we study the mixing parameter correlations arising from the symmetry group A5 including generalised CP subsequently broken into all of its possible residual symmetries. Focusing on those patterns which satisfy present experimental bounds, we then provide a detailed analysis of the measurable signatures accessible to the planned reactor, superbeam and neutrinoless double beta decay experiments. We also discuss the role which could be played by high-precision measurements from longer term projects such as the Neutrino Factory. This work provides a concrete example of how the synergies of the upcoming experimental programme allow flavour symmetric models to be thoroughly investigated. Indeed, thanks to the rich tapestry of observable correlations, we find that each step of the experimental programme can make important contributions to the assessment of such flavour-symmetric patterns, and ultimately all patterns that we have identified can be excluded, or strong evidence found for their continued relevance.

    Abstract We study lensing by voids in Cubic Galileon and Nonlocal gravity cosmologies, which are examples of theories of gravity that modify the lensing potential. We find voids in the dark matter and halo density fields of N-body simulations and compute their lensing signal analytically from the void density profiles, which we show are well fit by a simple analytical formula. In the Cubic Galileon model, the modifications to gravity inside voids are not screened and they approximately double the size of the lensing effects compared to GR. The difference is largely determined by the direct effects of the fifth force on lensing and less so by the modified density profiles. For this model, we also discuss the subtle impact on the force and lensing calculations caused by the screening effects of haloes that exist in and around voids. In the Nonlocal model, the impact of the modified density profiles and the direct modifications to lensing are comparable, but they boost the lensing signal by only $\approx 10\%$, compared with that of GR. Overall, our results suggest that lensing by voids is a promising tool to test models of gravity that modify lensing.

    Abstract The developmental origins of sleep and brain activity rhythms in higher vertebrate animals (birds and mammals) are currently unknown. In order to create an experimental system in which these could be better elucidated, we designed, built and tested a system for recording EEG and EMG signals in-ovo from chicken embryos incubated for 16-21 days. This system can remain attached to the individual subject through the process of hatching and continue to be worn post-natally. Electrode wires surgically implanted on the head of the embryo are connected to a battery-operated ultraportable transmitter which can either be attached to the eggshell or worn on the back. The transmitter processes up to 6 channels of data with a maximum sampling frequency of 500 Hz and a resolution of 12 bits. The radio link uses a carrier frequency of 4 MHz, and has a maximum transfer rate of 500 kbit/s; receiving antennas compatible with both in-egg recordings and post-natal recordings from freely-moving birds were produced. A receiver connected with one USB port of a PC transmits the data for digital storage. This system is based on discrete, off-the-shelf components, can provide a few days of continuous operation with a single lithium coin battery, and has a noise floor level of 0.35 μV. The transmitter dimensions are 16 × 13 × 1.5 mm and the weight without the battery is 0.7 g. The microprocessor allows flexible operation modes not usually made available in other small multichannel acquisition systems implemented by means of ad hoc mixed signal chips.

    Abstract We present here a scenario, based on a low reheating temperature T(R)<<100 MeV at the end of (the last episode of) inflation, in which the coupling of sterile neutrinos to active neutrinos can be as large as experimental bounds permit (thus making this neutrino "visible" in future experiments). In previous models this coupling was forced to be very small to prevent a cosmological overabundance of sterile neutrinos. Here the abundance depends on how low the reheating temperature is. For example, the sterile neutrino required by the Liquid Scintillator Neutrino Detector result may not have any cosmological problem within our scenario.
