    Abstract Toilet cleaner containing hydrochloric acid is a common item found in households all over the world. Due to the availability of the substance, it becomes one of the main contributors to corrosive damage to the gastrointestinal system. This study reports a case of a female in her 50s with an alleged history of ingestion of toilet cleaner an empty bottle of which was found together with a suicide note at the incident site. During the autopsy, the forensic expert made an intriguing observation regarding the dispersion of ingested acid to other organs without gastric perforation. Despite the absence of gastric perforation, the corrosive effects of the ingested acid were evident in various organs, including the liver and spleen. This phenomenon suggests a unique mechanism by which the acid is able to disperse and cause damage beyond the stomach, leading to widespread organ involvement. However, through a comprehensive analysis of the detailed history, typical macroscopic autopsy findings, and chemical analysis reports, it is possible to establish that the cause of death is corrosive acid poisoning. In such cases, further investigation is warranted to gain a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms responsible for the dispersion of the acid and its clinical implications. By delving deeper into these aspects, we can enhance our knowledge and contribute to the field of forensic medicine.

    Abstract Colorectal surgery has witnessed a transformative shift with the advent of minimally invasive techniques, offering patients reduced postoperative discomfort, shorter hospital stays, and accelerated recovery compared to conventional open surgery.     Abstract Epithelial cell collectives migrate through tissue interfaces and crevices to orchestrate processes of development, tumor invasion, and wound healing. Naturally, traversal of cell collective through confining environments involves crowding due to the narrowing space, which seems tenuous given the conventional inverse relationship between cell density and migration. However, physical transitions required to overcome such epithelial densification for migration across confinements remain unclear. Here, in contiguous microchannels, we show that epithelial (MCF10A) monolayers accumulate higher cell density before entering narrower channels; however, overexpression of breast cancer oncogene +ErbB2 reduced this need for density accumulation across confinement. While wildtype MCF10A cells migrated faster in narrow channels, this confinement sensitivity reduced after +ErbB2 mutation or with constitutively-active RhoA. The migrating collective developed pressure differentials upon encountering microchannels, like fluid flow into narrowing spaces, and this pressure dropped with their continued migration. These transitions of pressure and density altered cell shapes and increased effective temperature, estimated by treating cells as granular thermodynamic system. While +RhoA cells and those in confined regions were effectively warmer, cancer-like +ErbB2 cells remained cooler. Epithelial reinforcement by metformin treatment increased density and temperature differentials across confinement, indicating that higher cell cohesion could reduce unjamming. Our results provide experimental evidence for previously proposed theories of inverse relationship between density and motility-related effective temperature. Indeed, we show across cell lines that confinement increases pressure and effective temperature, which enable migration by reducing density. This physical interpretation of collective cell migration as granular matter could advance our understanding of complex living systems.

    Abstract Aim: The aim of this paper is to report a rare case in a 6-year-old girl where two dental anomalies, fusion and concrescence, coexisted in primary dentition. This highlights the significance of the accurate early diagnosis of these dental anomalies.
    Background: Odontogenic anomalies are frequently encountered in dental practice. These anomalies can occur due to abnormalities during the differentiation stage and may lead to aberrations in hard tissue formation. Some of the uncommon and unusual dental anomalies of number and form include fusion, gemination, and concrescence.
    Case description: This elusive case represents the fusion and concrescence together between the left central and a supernumerary tooth. The left primary central incisor presens as a large tooth with a groove through the incisal edge. Clinical observation along with radiographic evaluation using RVG radiographs and orthopantomogram (OPG) were used to arrive at a diagnosis.
    Conclusion: Early diagnosis of concrescence will reduce the risk of possible complications associated with any need for extraction later on. Monitoring the patient and long-term follow-up are required to manage the case with coexisting anomalies of true fusion and acquired concrescence.
    Clinical significance: A thorough history-taking and clinical and radiographic evaluation of fusion and concrescence at an early stage results in an accurate diagnosis. A careful monitoring plan is a key to reduce the risk of possible complications later on.

    Abstract Formation of epithelial structures of variegated geometries and sizes is essential for organogenesis, tumor growth, and wound repair. Although epithelial cells are predisposed with potential for multicellular clustering, it remains unclear whether immune cells and mechanical cues from their microenvironment influence this process. To explore this possibility, we co-cultured human mammary epithelial cells with pre-polarized macrophages on soft or stiff hydrogels. In the presence of M1 (proinflammatory) macrophages on soft matrices, epithelial cells migrated faster and subsequently formed larger multicellular clusters, compared to co-cultures with M0 (unpolarized) or M2 (anti-inflammatory) macrophages. By contrast, stiff extracellular matrix (ECM) disabled active clustering of epithelial cells due to their enhanced migration and cell-ECM adhesion, regardless of macrophage polarization. We found that the co-presence of soft matrices and M1 macrophages reduced focal adhesions, but enhanced fibronectin deposition and non-muscle myosin-IIA expression, which altogether optimize conditions for epithelial clustering. Upon Rho-associated kinase (ROCK) inhibition, epithelial clustering was abrogated, indicating a requirement for optimized cellular forces. In these co-cultures, Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF)-α secretion was the highest with M1 macrophages and Transforming growth factor (TGF)-β secretion was exclusively detectable in case of M2 macrophages on soft gels, which indicated potential role of macrophage secreted factors in the observed epithelial clustering. Indeed, exogenous addition of TGB-β promoted epithelial clustering with M1 co-culture on soft gels. According to our findings, optimization of both mechanical and immune factors can tune epithelial clustering responses, which could have implications in tumor growth, fibrosis, and would healing.
    Summary: Authors show proinflammatory macrophages on soft matrices enable epithelial cells to form multicellular clusters. This phenomenon is disabled on stiff matrices due to increased stability of focal adhesions. Inflammatory cytokine secretion is macrophage-dependent, and external addition of cytokines accentuates epithelial clustering on soft matrices.
    Impact statement: Formation of multicellular epithelial structures is critical to tissue homeostasis. However, it has not been shown how the immune system and mechanical environment affect these structures. The present work illustrates how macrophage type affects epithelial clustering in soft and stiff matrix environments.

    Abstract Formation of epithelial structures of variegated geometries and sizes is essential for organogenesis, tumor growth, and wound repair. Although epithelial cells are predisposed with potential for multicellular clustering, it remains unclear whether immune cells and mechanical cues from their microenvironment influence this process.     Abstract Over the last 20 years, optical fiber-based devices have been exploited extensively in the field of biochemical sensing, with applications in many specific areas such as the food processing industry, environmental monitoring, health diagnosis, bioengineering, disease diagnosis, and the drug industry due to their compact, label-free, and highly sensitive detection. The selective and accurate detection of biochemicals is an essential part of biosensing devices, which is to be done through effective functionalization of highly specific recognition agents, such as enzymes, DNA, receptors, etc., over the transducing surface. Among many optical fiber-based sensing technologies, optical fiber interferometry-based biosensors are one of the broadly used methods with the advantages of biocompatibility, compact size, high sensitivity, high-resolution sensing, lower detection limits, operating wavelength tunability, etc. This Review provides a comprehensive review of the fundamentals as well as the current advances in developing optical fiber interferometry-based biochemical sensors. In the beginning, a generic biosensor and its several components are introduced, followed by the fundamentals and state-of-art technology behind developing a variety of interferometry-based fiber optic sensors. These include the Mach-Zehnder interferometer, the Michelson interferometer, the Fabry-Perot interferometer, the Sagnac interferometer, and biolayer interferometry (BLI). Further, several technical reports are comprehensively reviewed and compared in a tabulated form for better comparison along with their advantages and disadvantages. Further, the limitations and possible solutions for these sensors are discussed to transform these in-lab devices into commercial industry applications. At the end, in conclusion, comments on the prospects of field development toward the commercialization of sensor technology are also provided. The Review targets a broad range of audiences including beginners and also motivates the experts helping to solve the real issues for developing an industry-oriented sensing device.

    Abstract Petroleum spent hydroprocessing catalysts are hazardous solid waste, the efficient recycling of which is a serious challenge to refineries. However, information on the economic feasibility of spent catalysts recycling plants is scarce, which is critical for environmental authorities and decision-makers. In this work, an innovative recycling scheme targeting hydrometallurgical recovery of base metals (Ni, Mo, and V) and transforming low-value Al residue into a high-value boehmite (γ-AlOOH) as the key product was considered an efficient way to beneficiate the hazardous spent hydroprocessing catalysts. A preliminary techno-economic evaluation of such a recycling scheme was performed to assess the feasibility of the proposed recycling scheme. The recovery cost (valuable metals and boehmite) and potential revenue were estimated to study the economics of the process. The preliminary results have suggested that the recycling scheme is economically feasible with a high internal rate of return (IRR) of 12.3%, a net present value of 38.6 million USD, and a short payback period of 8.7 years. Furthermore, a sensitivity analysis (± 10%) conducted on key parameters showed that the selling prices of the finished products and the cost of chemicals were the most important factors affecting plant economics. Overall, the recycling scheme was sustainable and avoided landfilling of spent catalysts as the residue can be beneficiated into a high-value product. The results from the economic feasibility study are likely to assist the stakeholders and decision-makers in making investment and policy decisions for the valorization of spent hydroprocessing catalysts.

    Abstract The problem of plastic waste in the environment calls for the development of new polymeric materials designed specifically for easy recycling at the end of their life cycle. Herein, a green polymer system comprising a series of necklace-shaped polydimethylsiloxanes bearing anthracene dimer units is developed. The polymers have low environmental impact and are easily recycled. Further, their flexibility and glass transition temperatures are easy to control. These necklace-shaped inorganic polymers are synthesized by photopolymerizing (dimerizing) anthracene-terminated oligo-dimethylsiloxane monomers. A key achievement of the present work is the successful chemical recovery of the monomers from the polymers through thermal depolymerization, enabling monomer-polymer recycling. By applying equilibrium polymerization with base catalysts, monomers with a controlled distributed chain length are synthesized from monomers with a constant chain length. The necklace-shaped polymers synthesized from these randomized monomers have amorphous structures and readily form transparent films. It is possible to modulate the thermal and mechanical properties of the polymers by controlling the average chain length of the polydimethylsiloxane between the anthracene dimers. This investigation presents a method for the synthesis and cyclic utilization of polymer materials with a wide range of applications, including plastics and elastomers.
