Abstract Introduction: Congenital esophageal stenosis (CES) is an extremely rare pathology in children, with an incidence of 1/25,000-50,000 live births. According to its histopathological classification, there are three types of CES: fibromuscular hyperplasia, membranous diaphragm, and tracheobronchial remnants.
Clinical case: We present the clinical case of a 39-month-old male patient diagnosed with CES secondary to tracheobronchial remnants, with multiple vomit and reflux episodes since he was 4 months old. He was admitted at the emergency department with respiratory distress. An upper GI endoscopy and an esophagogram were initially carried out. Stenosis resection and thoracoscopic esophageal anastomosis were performed.
Conclusions: Tracheobronchial remnants are the second most common presentation of congenital esophageal stenosis. They can be managed through dilatations or surgery according to etiology.

Abstract Introduction and aims: Colorectal cancer is among the three most common cancers worldwide. Knowledge and identification of suboptimal outcome-associated factors enable comprehensive patient management. The aim of the present study was to present the results of the surgical management of colorectal cancer at a quaternary care university hospital.
Materials and methods: An observational, analytic, cross-sectional study was conducted. Information was collected on a retrospective cohort of patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer from 2013 to 2017 at the Hospital Universitario Mayor Méderi, Bogotá, Colombia.
Results: Data on 452 patients, within the study period, were collected. A total of 48.5% of the patients were men, the overall complication rate was 24%, the surgical site infection (SSI) rate was 15.38%, anastomotic dehiscence occurred in 4.18% of the patients, bleeding required reoperation in 1.32%, and the intrahospital mortality rate was 7.47%.
Conclusion: Colorectal cancer management at a university hospital was as beneficial as that provided by other types of hospitals, showing a direct association with complete R0 dissections; low complication rates, according to international reports; and reduced overall morbidity.

Abstract The current global COVID-19 pandemic is caused by the novel coronavirus severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Currently, acquired tracheoesophageal fistulas are mainly iatrogenic lesions produced by prolonged tracheal intubation. We present a case of tracheoesophageal fistula with severe tracheal stenosis following tracheal intubation in a patient with SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract Retroperitoneal liposarcomas are very infrequent retroperitoneal malignant tumours. Most patients complain of palpable abdominal mass and only half present with abdominal pain. With haematogenous spread they can reach, mainly, lungs and liver, but only in 10% of cases. Here we report the presentation and surgical treatment of a giant massive retroperitoneal liposarcoma in a 53-year-old man.

Abstract Appendicitis is one of the most common conditions that leads to an acute abdomen. Surgical management is the gold standard for therapy. The main cause of appendicitis is an obstruction in the appendicular lumen. Intestinal ascariasis infection is undoubtedly one of the least frequent. We present a female patient with acute appendicitis resulting from Ascaris lumbricoides as an incidental intraoperative diagnosis.

Abstract During chronic liver disease, macrophages support angiogenesis, not only by secreting proangiogenic growth factors and matrix-remodeling proteases, but also by physically interacting with the sprouting vasculature to assist the formation of complex vascular networks. In the liver, macrophages acquire specific characteristics becoming Kupffer cells and working to ensure protection and immunotolerance. Angiogenesis is another double-edged sword in health and disease and it is the biggest ally of macrophages allowing its dissemination. Angiogenesis and fibrosis may occur in parallel in several tissues as macrophages co-localize with newly formed vessels and secrete cytokines, interleukins, and growth factors that will activate other cell types in the liver such as hepatic stellate cells and liver sinusoidal endothelial cells, promoting extracellular matrix accumulation and fibrogenesis. Vascular endothelial growth factor, placental growth factor, and platelet-derived growth factor are the leading secreted factors driving pathological angiogenesis and consequently increasing macrophage infiltration. Tumor development in the liver has been widely linked to macrophage-mediated chronic inflammation in which epidermal growth factors, STAT3 and NF-kβ are some of the most relevant signaling molecules involved. In this article, we review the link between macrophages and angiogenesis at molecular and cellular levels in chronic liver disease.

Abstract Thoracotomy is defined as an incision made by the surgeon in the chest wall in order to allow visibility of the thoracic cavity content. This can be used by surgeons to treat thoracic cavity content diseases including the heart, lungs, esophagus, and other organs. Thoracic incision closure remains an item with no consensus. Therefore, we present an easy way and give a little tip for closure using the slipknot that will allow the correct approach of ribs and the successful closure of the intercostal space.

Abstract Introduction: Workplace bullying and sexual harassment are concerns among general surgery residents in Colombia.
Objetive: To explore the prevalence and impact of workplace bullying and sexual harassment incidents among general surgery residents in Colombia.
Materials and methods: This nationwide study was conducted in 2020. Residents selfrated their exposure to workplace bullying and to sexual harassment in the forms of gender harassment, unwanted sexual attention, and sexual coercion. We analyzed demographic variables, perpetrator’s characteristics, and differences between victims and non-victims.
Results: The study included 302 residents. It found that 49% of general surgery residents in Colombia suffered from workplace bullying and 14.9% experienced sexual harassment. The main forms of sexual harassment were gender harassment (47%) and unwanted sexual attention (47%). Women reported significantly higher rates of being sexually harassed. Surgeons were the main perpetrators of sexual harassment.
Conclusions: Workplace bullying and sexual harassment are frequent events in general surgery residency in Colombia. These findings suggest the need for interventions to improve the educational culture of surgical departments and decrease the prevalence of these behaviors.

Abstract Background: The identification of gastric polyps incidentally in endoscopies of the upper digestive tract has increased its incidence, varying between 0.5% and 23%. 10% of these polyps have symptoms, 40% are hyperplastic. We allow ourselves to propose a laparoscopic technique for the management of giant hyperplastic polyps associated with a pyloric syndrome, not susceptible to endoscopic resection.
Method: A series of patients approached by laparoscopic transgastric polypectomy due to the giant gastric polyps associated with pyloric syndrome, in Bogotá, Colombia, from January 2015 to December 2018.
Results: Seven patients, 85% female, with an average age of 51 years, who were admitted for pyloric syndrome and were taken to laparoscopic management, with an average surgical time of 42 min, intraoperative bleeding 7-8 cc, tolerance to the oral route 24 hours, no conversion, without mortality.
Conclusions: Transgastric polypectomy for the management of benign giant gastric polyps that cannot be resected endoscopically turns out to be a feasible method, with a low rate of complications and without mortality.
