    Abstract Introduction: Status epilepticus (SE) is a medical emergency associated with a significant risk of disability and death. The treatment of SE follows a step-wise approach, with limited data on ideal antiseizure medications (ASMs) for refractory and super refractory SE (RSE/SRSE). Perampanel (PER), an AMPA receptor antagonist, has shown promise in animal models but still has limited data in humans. This study tried to evaluate optimal dosage and safety of PER in RSE and SRSE patients.
    Materials and methods: We retrospectively analysed 17 adult patients with RSE (1) or SRSE (16) treated with PER. Demographic and clinical data, including EEG patterns, ASMs administered, PER dosages, and PER plasma concentrations, were collected. For patients receiving a 24 mg PER loading dose (full dose group), the following treatment regimen was applied: 24 mg per day for 48 h following by 16 mg per day. The response to PER was assessed based on electroencephalographic (EEG) improvement from high to low epileptiform activity or from low to the absence of epileptiform activities. Safety was evaluated monitoring hepatic and renal function.
    Results: A response rate of 58.82 % was observed, with significantly higher responses in the full dose group (81.82 %) compared to those receiving PER doses below 24 mg (low dose group) (16.67 %) (p-value = 0.004; OR 0.044, 95 % CI 0.003 to 0.621, p = 0.021). No other clinical factors significantly influenced treatment response. Hepatic enzymes become elevated in most patients (70.59 %) but spontaneously decreased.
    Discussion: Our findings suggest that a 24 mg PER dose administered for 48 h may be more effective in managing RSE and SRSE compared to doses below 24 mg, potentially due to pharmacokinetic factors.
    Conclusion: More robust data on PER in RSE and SRSE, including standardized dosing procedures and plasma level monitoring are needed. PER's potential benefits should be explored further, particularly in patients with RSE and SRSE.

    Abstract Assessing the authenticity of PDO cheeses is an important task because it allows consumer expectations to be fulfilled and guarantees fair competition for manufacturers. A 3-year survey was carried out, analyzing 271 samples of grated Grana Padano (GP) PDO cheese collected on the European market. Previously developed analytical methods based on proteomics approaches were adopted to evaluate the compliance of market samples with selected legal requirements provided by the specification for this cheese. Proteolysis follows highly repeatable pathways in GP cheese due to the usage of raw milk, natural whey starter, and consistent manufacturing and ripening conditions. From selected casein breakdown products, it is possible to calculate the actual cheese age (should be >9 months) and detect the presence of excess rind (should be <18%). Furthermore, due to the characteristic pattern of free amino acids established for GP, distinguishing it from closely related cheese varieties is feasible. Cheese age ranged from 9 to 25 months and was correctly claimed on the label. Based on the amino acid pattern, three samples probably contained defective cheese and there was only one imitation cheese. Few samples (9%) were proven to contain some excess rind. Overall, this survey highlighted that the adopted control parameters can assure the quality of grated GP.

    Abstract Peridotites of Ulten Zone (Eastern Alps, N Italy) show a transition from coarse protogranular spinel lherzolites to fine‐grained amphibole + garnet peridotites, recorded by the crystallization of garnet coronas around spinel. Pyroxenite veins, transposed along the peridotite foliation, show a similar metamorphic evolution from coarse‐grained (garnet‐free) websterites to fine‐grained garnet websterites. In both peridotites and websterites, garnet previously exsolved from porphyroclastic high‐temperature pyroxenes and later crystallized along the foliation. This evolution has been interpreted to reflect cooling and pressure increase of websterites and host peridotites from spinel‐ to garnet‐facies conditions. Microstructures and crystallographic orientation data indicate that the re‐equilibration of garnet websterites in the garnet stability field occurred during deformation. Porphyroclastic pyroxenes have been interpreted to deform by dislocation glide and creep. In particular, TEM observations indicate the activation of the (100)[010] slip system in orthopyroxene. Core‐and‐mantle microstructures also suggest that dislocation creep was aided by subgrain rotation recrystallization, leading to the formation of neoblastic pyroxenes. These recrystallized grains deformed by diffusion‐accommodated grain boundary sliding, as indicated by the occurrence of quadruple junctions and straight, aligned grain boundaries. The transition from dislocation creep to diffusion creep in websterites was accompanied by the crystallization of garnet along foliation, which triggered the pinning of the recrystallized matrix and stabilized the fine‐grained microtexture for diffusion creep, promoting rheological weakening. Garnet websterites of Ulten Zone thus offer a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of reaction softening during the corner flow in the supra‐subduction lithospheric mantle induced by the descending slab.

    Abstract We report the formation of "ripple" patterns by the sequential superposition of nonorthogonal surface waves excited by the spontaneous buckling of polymeric bilayers. Albeit of a different nature and micron scale compared to the familiar sedimentary ripples caused by gentle wave oscillations, we find commonalities in their topography, defects, and bifurcations. The patterns are rationalized in terms of a defect density that depends on the relative angle between generations, and a constant in-plane bending angle that depends on skin thickness. A minimal wave summation model enables the design of ripple and checkerboard surfaces by tuning material properties and fabrication process.

    Abstract Biopolymers of different natures (carbohydrates, proteins, etc.) recovered from by-products of industrial processes are increasingly being studied to obtain biomaterials as alternatives to conventional plastics, thus contributing to the implementation of a circular economy. The food industry generates huge amounts of by-products and waste, including unsold food products that reach the end of their shelf life and are no longer usable in the food chain. Milk proteins can be easily separated from dairy waste and adapted into effective bio-based polymeric materials. Firstly, this review describes the relevant properties of milk proteins and the approaches to modifying them for subsequent use. Then, we provide an overview of recent studies on the development of films and coatings based on milk proteins and, where available, their applications in food packaging. Comparisons among published studies were made based on the formulation as well as production conditions and technologies. The role of different additives and modifiers tested for the performances of films and coatings, such as water vapor permeability, tensile strength, and elongation at break, were reviewed. This review also outlines the limitations of milk-protein-based materials, such as moisture sensitivity and brittleness. Overall, milk proteins hold great potential as a sustainable alternative to petroleum-based polymers. However, their use in food packaging materials at an industrial level remains problematic.
