Title translation Girdling and gibberellic acid sprays in production, fruit quality and nutrient level in 'Monica' mandarin.
Abstract In the citrus-producing region of Veracruz, Mexico, 'Monica' mandarin orange (Citrus reticulata Blanco) is an alternative to the monoculture of 'Valencia' late orange, but its fruit-set is low. To solve this problem, an experiment was conducted under field conditions to determine whether the application of gibberellic acid and girdling would increase fruit set. The experiment was set up in Alamo, Veracruz, in an orchard of 12-year-old 'Monica' mandarin trees grafted onto sour orange (Citrus aurantium L.) rootstock. The experimental design was randomized blocks with seven replications; one tree was the experimental unit. When 20 mg L(-1) of GA3 was applied, there was no significant effect on fruit-set. However, when the trees were girdled during full flowering, production increased up to six times that of the control, although it correlated negatively with fruit size. There were no statistically significant differences in concentration of nutrients in the leaves, and titratable acidity (AT), total soluble solids (SST), and the ratio SST/AT in fruits were similar for all treatments.
