Abstract The polarizing properties of optical systems are often characterized by their action on specific polarization states. For example, half-wave plates are used to rotate linear polarizations and quarter-wave plates to turn a linear polarization into an elliptical polarization and into a circular polarization if the linear polarization makes a 45° angle with the slow and fast axes of the quarter-wave plate. Phase shifts introduced by the optical train of an interferometer may lead to coherence losses and the existence of neutral axes-in the sense of linear polarizations whose polarization state is not modified by the optical system-is then of importance to maximize the fringe contrast. Neutral axes do not systematically exist. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how this notion can be generalized to define generalized neutral axes for optical systems. Generalized neutral axes are defined as linear polarizations whose polarization state is not modified by the optical system except for their orientation. It is shown that such generalized neutral axes exist for some classes of optical systems. The scheme proposed in this paper has quasi-unitary Jones matrices to give an approximate description of optical systems when generalized neutral axes do not exist. To the best of my knowledge, this formalism is a new scheme to describe the polarizing properties of nondepolarizing optical systems.

Abstract Ouvrir, oui mais quand?

Abstract While fine-scale maps of vegetation alliances are required for conservation, their distribution is usually known at broad scales. Open-access field and spatial data are increasingly available worldwide, but their contribution to modelling vegetation alliances remains to be assessed. This study aimed to map the suitability area of six heath alliances distributed along ecological gradients throughout France. We used 20 broad and local variables derived from WorldClim, the European Union DEM, SoilGrids, and the Global Wind and Solar Atlases that describe bioclimatic and environmental conditions. For each alliance, two nested MaxEnt models were calibrated and validated using archive field data: one at a broad scale (1000 × 1000 m) to define its bioclimatic area, and the second at a local scale (25 × 25 m) to predict its environmental area. The results showed complementarity of the variables used to discriminate the alliances, and the accuracy of spatial modelling at broad (AUC = 0.83–0.99) and local scales (AUC = 0.91–0.99). They also highlighted the gradients of continentality and temperature that differentiate the alliances. These new maps provide additional knowledge about alliance distribution areas and could support natural vegetation conservation at a national scale.

Abstract Purpose: Although more practical for use, the impact of ferric carboxymaltose (FCM) on the hospital budget is considerable, and intravenous iron sucrose complex (ISC) represents a cost-saving alternative for the management of iron deficiency anemia in patients during hospitalization. The Drug Committee decided to reserve FCM for day hospitalizations and contraindications to ISC, especially allergy. ISC was available for prescription for all other situations.
Methods: The impact of a multifaceted intervention promoting a switch from FCM to ISC was evaluated using an interrupted time series model with segmented regression analysis. The standardized rate of the dispensing of FCM, ISC, and oral iron by the hospital pharmacy, as well as the rate of the dispensing of packed red blood cells and the number of biological iron status measurements, was analyzed before and after the intervention.
Results: There was an immediate decrease in FCM consumption following the intervention, with a reduction of 88% (RR: 0.12 [CI
Conclusion: Our intervention to lower the impact of intravenous iron therapy on the hospital budget was effective.

Abstract Molecular dynamics is often considered as a numerical experiment. The error bars on the results are therefore mandatory, but sometimes difficult to determine and computationally demanding. As a low-cost approach, we describe the application of the bootstrap (BS) method to the quantification of uncertainties pertaining to the time correlation functions. We chose the autocorrelation functions of velocity and interdiffusion current for a binary ionic mixture as a test bed, and we assessed the merit of the Darken approximation relating both of them. The intrinsic errors related to phase space sampling is investigated comparing the BS method with the reference method of replica. We also study how the BS method can assist in addressing the finite-size effects.

Abstract We investigated whether effervescent paracetamol, as an important source of nondietary sodium and fluid load, is associated with a transient increase in the risk of hospitalization for acute heart failure (AHF). We conducted a unidirectional case-crossover study using data from the 1 in 97th representative sample from the French health care database. Subjects aged ≥18 years, hospitalized for AHF during the 2014-2016 period, were included. Exposure to effervescent paracetamol was compared between a risk period (ie, 15 days immediately before admission for AHF) and 3 earlier 15-day control periods, to test a possible trigger effect of effervescent paracetamol intake on AHF. Adjusted odds ratios (aORs) were estimated with a conditional logistic regression. We identified 4301 patients hospitalized for AHF. We found that 5.7% of AHF subjects were exposed to effervescent paracetamol during the risk period, as compared with 4.1% during the control periods (aOR, 1.56 [95% confidence interval [CI], 1.27-1.90]; P < .001). This association was also found in the subgroup of subjects with hypertension (aOR, 1.45 [95%CI, 1.13-1.87]; P = .004, n = 2648) and in the subgroup of subjects aged ≥83 years (aOR, 1.70 [95%CI: 1.28-2.24], P < .001, n = 2238). A similar analysis, considering exposure to noneffervescent paracetamol, did not support the existence of an indication bias likely to explain the association observed for effervescent paracetamol. This study suggests an association between effervescent paracetamol and admission for AHF and should be confirmed with other complementary study designs.

Abstract Objective: We evaluated the ability of a coupled pattern-mining and clustering method to identify homogeneous groups of subjects in terms of healthcare resource use, prognosis and treatment sequences, in renal cancer patients beginning oral anticancer treatment.
Methods: Data were retrieved from the permanent sample of the French medico-administrative database. We applied the CP-SPAM algorithm for pattern mining to healthcare use sequences, followed by hierarchical clustering on principal components (HCPC).
Results and conclusion: We identified 127 individuals with renal cancer with a first reimbursement of an oral anticancer drug between 2010 and 2017. Clustering identified three groups of subjects, and discrimination between these groups was good. These clusters differed significantly in terms of mortality at six and 12 months, and medical follow-up profile (predominantly outpatient or inpatient care, biological monitoring, reimbursement of supportive care drugs). This case study highlights the potential utility of applying sequence-mining algorithms to a large range of healthcare reimbursement data, to identify groups of subjects homogeneous in terms of their care pathways and medical behaviors.
