Abstract Part of emission of the negatively charged kaons from the nucleus-nucleus collisions appears to originate from decays of ϕ(1020) mesons into the K+K− channel. We report on the measurement of the emission yield of ϕ mesons in the collisions of Ni+Ni at the beam kinetic energy of 1.91A GeV. The experiment was done with the FOPI spectrometer at the SIS 18 accelerator at GSI, Darmstadt. The total yield of ϕ was found to be (4.5 ± 0.7−1.2+1.8) · 10−4 per triggered event. Ratio of ϕ/K− emission yields was estimated at 0.42±0.13−0.11+0.17, meaning that about 20% of negatively charged kaons emitted from the collision originate from decays of ϕ mesons. The results are in agreement with similar HADES results done for the collisions of Ar+KCl.

Abstract Bilateral agenesis of the long head of the biceps brachial tendon (LHB) is a very rare variation of the anatomy. We report a case of an 18-year-old man with bilateral agenesis of the long head of the biceps brachii tendon. We present initial findings, radiographical examinations and the follow-up of an unusual entity. Diagnosis of agenesis of the LHB can be challenging especially in cases of traumatic shoulder pain. It is not a very known entity because of its rareness. However, it could be associated with other congenital anomalies. The absence of the LHB is easily ignored in the diagnostic process. Clinical examination should be a pitfall, radiological examination is helpful to confirm the suspicion of LHB absence. MRI is often the first choice, although ultrasonography is cheaper and much easier to access and it is an excellent tool to visualise this anatomic variation with empty or shallow intertubercular groove.

Abstract We consider the negotiation problem, in which an agent negotiates on behalf of a principal. Our considerations are focused on the Inspire negotiation support system in which the principal's preferences are visualised by circles. In this way, the principal describes the importance of each negotiation issue and the relative utility of each considered option. The paper proposes how this preference information may be implemented by the agent for determining a scoring function used to support decisions throughout the negotiation process. The starting point of our considerations is a discussion regarding the visualisation of the principal's preferences. We assume here that the importance of each issue and the utility of each option increases with the size of the circle representing them. The imprecise meaning of the notion of "circle size" implies that in a considered case, the utility of an option should be evaluated by a fuzzy number. The proposed utility fuzzification is justified by a simple analysis of results obtained from the empirical prenegotiation experiment. A novel method is proposed to determine trapezoidal fuzzy numbers, which evaluates an option's utility using a series of answers given by the participants of the experiment. The utilities obtained this way are applied to determine the fuzzy scoring function for an agent. By determining such a common generalised fuzzy scoring system, our approach helps agents handle the differences in human cognitive processes associated with understanding the principal's preferences. This work is the first approach to fuzzification of the preferences in the Inspire negotiation support system.

Abstract Background: To analyse the relation between immediate intraoperative neurophysiological changes during decompression and clinical outcome in a series of patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) undergoing surgery.
Methods: Twenty-four patients with neurogenic intermittent claudication (NIC) due to LSS undergoing decompressive surgery were prospectively studied. Intra operative trans-cranial motor evoked potentials (tcMEPs) were recorded before and immediately after surgical decompression. Lower limb normalised tcMEP improvement was used as primary neurophysiological outcome. Clinical outcome was assessed using the Zurich Claudication Questionnaire (ZCQ) self-assessment score, before surgery (baseline) and at an average of 8 and 29 months post-operatively.
Results: We found a moderate positive correlation between tcMEP changes and ZCQ at early follow-up (R=0.36). At late follow-up no correlation was found between intra-operative tcMEP and ZCQ changes. Dichotomizing the data showed a statistically significant relationship between tcMEP improvement and better functional outcome at early follow-up (P=0.013) but not at later follow-up (P=1).
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that intra-operative neurophysiological improvement during decompressive surgery may predict a better clinical outcome at early follow-up although this is not applicable to late follow-up possibly due to the observed erosion of functional improvement with time.

Abstract Background: Surgical access to benign neoplastic lesions of the femoral head are associated with significant morbidity, including contamination of intra-osseous access tracks, articular cartilage lesions, avascular bone necrosis or tumour recurrence due to incomplete curettage.
Case presentation: We present a case of a 20-year-old female with a giant cell tumour in the femoral head, which was treated with curettage through a trans-foveal approach and bone grafting. This technique includes a surgical dislocation of the hip with trochanteric osteotomy.
Results: At the latest follow-up at 2 years, there was no evidence of local recurrence or avascular necrosis on MRI, and the patient was pain free and back to sports.

Abstract Two hundred and eleven Indian skulls originating from medieval times, South of Peru, were studied in respect to variability of the mastoid emissary. Occurrence and localisation of the external orifice of the mastoid emissary were studied in three distinct and well-separated populations, living in the three different places: Villa el Salvador, Tablada de Lurin and Paracas. Most of the skulls presented considerable degree of artificial deformation. External orifice of the mastoid emissary was multiple in most of the skulls, especially in Villa el Salvador and Paracas populations. Mastoid emissaries in Indian were situated generally higher than in European, especially regarding the Paracas population. Significant sex differences were present in this material, regarded as a whole (summarized results for the three populations), what is in agreement with previous observations on European skulls. It indicates that even in cases of relatively deep deformation, some characteristic features of sex dimorphism of the human skull are noticeable. Additionally, the three studied populations, which were well separated from each other and lived alone, differed significantly regarding localization of the mastoid emissaries.

Abstract Background: Correlations between selected metric parameters of the human skull and the orbit should be useful for anticipating probable dimensions of the orbit in living subjects.
Material/methods: One hundred human skulls derived from medieval cemeteries in Poland and 20 additional contemporary skulls were investigated. Measurements were made with anthropometric caliper, vernier caliper and lead.
Results: For orbit depth, orbital coefficient was negatively correlated with the width and length coefficient of the skull, but skull length was positively correlated. The minimal distance between the anterior lacrimal crest and the optic canal had a positive correlation with the skull length and a negative correlation with the orbital coefficient. The distance between the fronto-zygomatic suture and the optic canal had a positive correlation with skull height and with orbit width. The distance between the infraorbital foramen and the optic canal had a negative correlation with the orbital coefficient. Empirical formulas were derived on the basis of the calculated means. These formulas allow prediction of the distances between important orbital structures and topographical points at the orbital entrance, based on skull dimensions which are easily measurable intravitally.
Conclusions: We conclude that the actual distances inside the orbit can be determined on the basis of gender, length and height of the skull, the width of the orbit, and the orbital coefficient.
