Abstract The preadjusted orthodontic appliance has improved the efficiency and effectiveness of the orthodontist in achieving good final results for patients in general. However, the orthodontist is limited in achieving excellent final results because of individual patient variation from the prescription of the preadjusted appliance as well as the orthodontist's ability to precisely place the appliance. This article presents a comprehensive system of evaluation of the individual patient to be used during the finishing stage of treatment and a written system of notation that can guide the orthodontist in producing an excellent finished result for each patient. In this system the orthodontist considers multiple aspects of esthetics, occlusion and function, periodontal health and root alignment, and stability. Every feature of these characteristics is examined and desired changes are noted on the "detailing form" resulting in a written plan that guides the orthodontist to achieve excellence in finishing. This written form can also act as a final checklist of obtainment of the goals of orthodontic treatment. This system of finishing can improve the efficiency of the individual orthodontist and assist in communication in multidoctor practices.

Abstract Introduction: The purpose of this study was to establish a method to prospectively predict the eruption of mandibular second premolars with panoramic radiographs. This technique could be used clinically to optimize the timing of comprehensive treatment, detect abnormalities of development and eruption, or effectively estimate eruption timing and determine the need for early intervention because of caries or defects of the deciduous dentition.
Methods: Three hundred one white children from an orthodontic practice in Alaska between the ages of 6 and 16 years were examined and monitored with serial panoramic radiographs until all premolars had erupted. Eruption of the mandibular second premolar was predicted at the first examination based on the panoramic radiograph. When the mandibular second premolar erupted, a researcher measured the crown length to crown-plus-root length ratio on the radiograph using the Simpson and Kunos scale, and the prospectively predicted timing of eruption was compared with the actual timing.
Results and conclusions: The Simpson and Kunos scale allowed a rapid assessment for predicting the time of eruption of mandibular second premolars. The mean age of eruption of the mandibular second premolar in these children was 12.5 years.

Abstract A Healthy People 2000 coalition comprised of representatives from public schools, the local health department, the medical community, and local university wished to improve child dietary behaviors through changes in school food service and nutrition education. To achieve this goal, parental beliefs and attitudes about child dietary behaviors and school food service were assessed through qualitative and quantitative methods. This article describes the qualitative methods and results. Focus groups were conducted using attribution theory as a framework to structure the research questions and interview guide and to organize and interpret data. Focus group results suggest parents believe dietary habits have both global and specific effects on chid health. In spite of expressing little control over children's eating habits, especially as children got older, parents felt schools could modify these habits through innovative, integrated nutrition education. They made suggestions as to how schools could offer healthy foods children would eat. Subjects emphasized that family support of nutrition education was essential for child dietary changes to become permanent. Insights obtained through the focus groups also were valuable in developing a questionnaire used to collect quantitative data.

Abstract We report on the first search for Λ[over ¯]-Λ oscillations in the decay J/ψ→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯]+c.c. by analyzing 1.31×10^{9}  J/ψ events accumulated with the BESIII detector at the BEPCII collider. The J/ψ events are produced using e^{+}e^{-} collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt[s]=3.097  GeV. No evidence for hyperon oscillations is observed. The upper limit for the oscillation rate of Λ[over ¯] to Λ hyperons is determined to be P(Λ)=[B(J/ψ→pK^{-}Λ+c.c.)/B(J/ψ→pK^{-}Λ[over ¯]+c.c.)]<4.4×10^{-6} corresponding to an oscillation parameter δm_{ΛΛ[over ¯]} of less than 3.8×10^{-18}  GeV at the 90% confidence level.

Abstract Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.93  fb^{-1} collected at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=3.773  GeV by the BESIII detector, the decay D^{0}→ωϕ is observed for the first time. The branching fraction is measured to be (6.48±0.96±0.40)×10^{-4} with a significance of 6.3σ, where the first and second uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. An angular analysis reveals that the ϕ and ω mesons from the D^{0}→ωϕ decay are transversely polarized. The 95% confidence level upper limit on longitudinal polarization fraction is set to be less than 0.24, which is inconsistent with current theoretical expectations and challenges our understanding of the underlying dynamics in charm meson decays.
