Abstract This study aimed to investigate the biological response induced by hydroxyapatite (HAp) and zinc-doped HAp (ZnHAp) in human gingival fibroblasts and to explore their antimicrobial activity. The ZnHAp (with xZn = 0.00 and 0.07) powders, synthesized by the sol-gel method, retained the crystallographic structure of pure HA without any modification. Elemental mapping confirmed the uniform dispersion of zinc ions in the HAp lattice. The size of crystallites was 18.67 ± 2 nm for ZnHAp and 21.54 ± 1 nm for HAp. The average particle size was 19.38 ± 1 nm for ZnHAp and 22.47 ± 1 nm for HAp. Antimicrobial studies indicated an inhibition of bacterial adherence to the inert substrate. In vitro biocompatibility was tested on various doses of HAp and ZnHAp after 24 and 72 h of exposure and revealed that cell viability decreased after 72 h starting with a dose of 31.25 µg/mL. However, cells retained membrane integrity and no inflammatory response was induced. High doses (such as 125 µg/mL) affected cell adhesion and the architecture of F-actin filaments, while in the presence of lower doses (such as 15.625 µg/mL), no modifications were observed. Cell proliferation was inhibited after treatment with HAp and ZnHAp, except the dose of 15.625 µg/mL ZnHAp at 72 h of exposure, when a slight increase was observed, proving an improvement in ZnHAp activity due to Zn doping.

Abstract Chronic wounds represent one of the complications that might occur from the disruption of wound healing process. Recently, there has been a rise in interest in employing nanotechnology to develop novel strategies for accelerating wound healing. The aim of the present study was to use a green synthesis method to obtain AgNPs/NaLS systems useful for wounds management and perform an in-depth investigation of their behavior during and post-synthesis as well as of their biological properties. The colloids obtained from silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and commercial sodium lignosulfonate (NaLS) in a single-pot aqueous procedure have been fully characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, DLS, TEM, XRD, and XPS to evaluate the synthesis efficiency and to provide new insights in the process of AgNPs formation and NaLS behavior in aqueous solutions. The effects of various concentrations of NaLS (0-16 mg/mL) and AgNO

Abstract 4-Aminodiphenylamino derivatives were investigated for their antioxidant and hydrophobicity character, together with other biological measurements, such as antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity. Among these nine compounds used, we obtained novel derivatives via reaction of the starting material with NBD-chloride. Therefore, we performed a full structural analysis for these compounds, i.e., elemental analysis, IR, UV-Vis, ¹H- and ¹³C-NMR, ESI-MS, X-ray diffraction on single crystal, etc. The hydrophobicity of all the compounds was measured either experimentally using the RP-TLC technique, or via calculation using the fragments method. The other structural characteristics were analyzed, and a correlation between the experimental and computed properties was found. Moreover, the results of the biological evaluation showed that some of the synthesized compounds have antimicrobial and antibiofilm activity.

Abstract Growing resistance to antimicrobials, combined with pathogens that form biofilms, presents significant challenges in healthcare. Modifying current antimicrobial agents is an economical approach to developing novel molecules that could exhibit biological activity. Thus, five sulfanilamide Schiff bases were synthesized under microwave irradiation and characterized spectroscopically and in silico. They were evaluated for their antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains. Their cytotoxic potential against two cancer cell lines was also determined. Gram-positive bacteria were susceptible to the action of these compounds. Derivatives

Abstract This is the first report on an efficient, "environmentally friendly" chemical reduction method for the synthesis of aminated hyaluronic acid-based silver nanoparticles on the modified surface of titanium dioxide nanoparticles aimed for biological applications. Silver nanoparticles exhibit well-known physical-chemical and optical properties appropriate for different biological applications. Modifying the nanoparticles leads to a change in their expected bioactivity. This represents an important topic for the current research. We have developed a novel aminated hyaluronic acid (HA-EDA)-based protocol to obtain silver nanoparticles, in which HA-EDA was used for the first time as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The effect of the size of silver nanoparticles on the titanium dioxide surface and the chemical composition of the obtained materials were investigated by TEM, XRD, XPS, ATR-FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, NMR and H

Abstract Introduction: One of the promising leads for the rapid discovery of alternative antimicrobial agents is to repurpose other drugs, such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) for fighting bacterial infections and antimicrobial resistance.
Methods: A series of new carbazole derivatives based on the readily available anti-inflammatory drug carprofen has been obtained by nitration, halogenation and N-alkylation of carprofen and its esters. The structures of these carbazole compounds were assigned by NMR and IR spectroscopy. Regioselective electrophilic substitution by nitration and halogenation at the carbazole ring was assigned from H NMR spectra. The single crystal X-ray structures of two representative derivatives obtained by dibromination of carprofen, were also determined. The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was measured using the DPPH method. The antimicrobial activity assay was performed using quantitative methods, allowing establishment of the minimal inhibitory/bactericidal/biofilm eradication concentrations (MIC/MBC/MBEC) on Gram-positive (
Results and discussion: The crystal X-ray structures of 3,8-dibromocarprofen and its methyl ester have revealed significant differences in their supramolecular assemblies. The most active antioxidant compound was
