Abstract The distribution of data points is a key component in machine learning. In most cases, one uses min-max normalization to obtain nodes in $[0,1]$ or Z-score normalization for standard normal distributed data. In this paper, we apply transformation ideas in order to design a complete orthonormal system in the $\mathrm{L}_2$ space of functions with the standard normal distribution as integration weight. Subsequently, we are able to apply the explainable ANOVA approximation for this basis and use Z-score transformed data in the method. We demonstrate the applicability of this procedure on the well-known forest fires data set from the UCI machine learning repository. The attribute ranking obtained from the ANOVA approximation provides us with crucial information about which variables in the data set are the most important for the detection of fires.

Abstract Novel in their scope and intensity, human‐mediated changes in genetic diversity through directed gene transfer technologies and longer standing human‐driven selective pressures, such as land‐use change, species introductions, mass extinctions, and broad application of antibiotics, are combining to reorganize mechanisms of evolution. The evolutionary consequences of anthropogenic change can be observed across levels of biological organization and are influencing the rate of micro‐ and macroevolutionary changes, as well as feedback among them. This may have large‐scale effects on the provisioning of ecosystem services, food security, and human health. Here, we summarize several of the ecological implications of human modification of evolutionary dynamics, focusing specifically on emerging molecular technologies, to highlight some of the challenges in predicting subsequent changes in the world’s ecosystems.

Abstract Social and traditional media are revolutionizing health care. Medicine, once an art practiced behind closed doors, is now part of the public domain. This article will help neurologists navigate a complex maze of technology to optimize patient care without compromising privacy. We offer ideas for improving our digital "footprint." Guidance is given on maintaining professional demeanor in all private and public interactions to help us avoid personal or patient insult and injury. Acknowledging that neurology is becoming a specialty of increased personal and social education, we outline ways to proactively improve our patient care and education locally and globally.

Abstract Across large portions of the western United States, drought intervals are increasing, often accompanied by larger-magnitude rainfalls. Semi-arid ecosystems are expected to be especially responsive to such temporal repackaging of rainfall because of their high sensitivity to variation in soil moisture. We conducted a field manipulation experiment to evaluate the impacts of summer rainfall repackaging (small/many events to large/few events with a fixed total seasonal amount) on a semi-arid mixed annual/perennial bunchgrass ecosystem. We monitored the sensitivity of plant greenness and productivity to soil moisture under rainfall pulses by combining automated, high-frequency repeat digital images at both plot- and plant functional type- level, whole plot CO₂ uptake measurements, and continuous in-situ soil moisture data. We found that plot greenness was closely correlated with gross primary productivity across all rainfall repackaging treatments (R=0.82). Plot greenness was weakly correlated to soil moisture at the beginning of the growing season but showed a significant positive correlation during peak and late growing season. Notably, we found a significant lag time of ∼5 days between changes in soil moisture and canopy greenness under large/few events, while there was no lag under small/many events. This time lag was found to be driven by perennial grass greenness and its sensitivity to the relatively deep soil water infiltration observed with large/few rainfall events. Predicting semi-arid grassland responses to soil moisture dynamics under ongoing rainfall repackaging, and subsequent impacts on the regional to global carbon budget, should consider plant communities' phenological characteristics and functional type composition.
