Abstract Introduction: As the ageing population is increasing, the burden of their health problems is on a rise. Methods: A cross-sectional community-based study was conducted among elderly population aged 60 years and above residing in the rural field practice area of A.J. Institute of Medical Sciences & Research Centre in Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, India. Results: The mean age of the participants was 66.9±6.3years. Out of 375 elderly participants, females were 57.9%. In the study population only 3.7% elderly were not suffering from any form of morbidity. Majority (25.3%) of them were suffering from 3 morbidities and 12.5% had 5 and more morbidities. Major morbidities of the study population were impaired vision followed by hypertension and joint problems. The proportion of arthritis, anaemia and obesity were significantly higher among females than among male participants. Conclusion: The study among the elderly in Dakshina Kannada District, has highlighted a prevalence of visual complaints, hypertension and joint problems in the population. As the study shows that there is a higher prevalence of multimorbidity among the rural population, geriatric health care should be given due emphasis in health care services.

Abstract Background: Aging is an inevitable developmental phenomenon bringing along a number of changes in the physical, psychological, hormonal and the social conditions. These changes are expected to affect the quality of life of the elderly. Methods: In the rural area, cross‐sectional community‐based study was conducted among elderly population aged 60 years and above. WHO Quality of Life BREF (WHOQOL BREF) questionnaire was used to assess quality of life. Results: Among the study population, the mean perceived overall quality of life scores were 62.1}16.4 and the mean perceived overall health status scores were 59.8}17.4. Males were found to have better social relations compared to females. Among <70 years better physical domain scores were seen compared to ≥70 years. Among the literates and currently married elderly, all the domain scores were higher compared to illiterates and those without partners respectively. Conclusion: All the domains of quality of life were significantly affected for those who were illiterate or were single. Males were found to have better social relations compared to females. Such perceived quality of life study helps to highlight the inequalities among the elderly, which can be targeted to improve the quality of life.

Abstract Application of neemcake (NC), vermicompost (VC), poultry manure (PM) or their combinations farm yard manure (FYM) enhanced phenol content in the leaves. Significantly highest chlorophyll (0.410, 0.640 and 2.217 mg/g) were noticed due to the application of FYM + VC at 30, 60 and 90 days after sowing (DAS). Application of FYM + NC, FYM + VC, and NC + VCrecorded highest total sugars. Significantly highest protein content was observed due to the application of PM and VC. However, the organic amendments had little impact on chlorophyll, total sugars and protein contents in the leaves. Overall all these organic amendments will have positive correlation with sucking pest population.

Abstract Background and Objective: There should be one comprehensive measure or index which can represent the overall prevalence of under-nutrition of all three forms (underweight, wasting and stunting). Composite index of anthropometric failure is one such indicator, proposed by Svedberg. Three new indices namely UI, WI and SI has also been proposed and used. The advantage of use of MUAC is its simplicity. Weech’s formula is an age old formula used by clinicians to identify undernourished children. Material and methods: The study included 171 children under the age of five years, who were referred from the anganwadis of Dakshina Kannada region during the period of January-March 2012. The proportion of underweight, wasting and stunting were calculated according to the new child growth standard of the WHO. CIAF, UI, WI and SI were calculated. Sensitivity, specificity, predictive value and likelihood ratios were calculated for MUAC and Weech’s formula. Results: 58.4% children belonged to category “D” of CIAF. Weech’s formula’s sensitivity in detecting underweight and stunted children was 100% and 96% respectively. Conclusion: Use of CIAF, UI, WI and SI is recommended to present the overall picture of under-nutrition among under-five children. Weech’s formula is a sensitive and specific tool to identify to undernourished children. Keywords: CIAF, Underweight index, Wasting index, Stunting index, Weech’s formula

Abstract Background: Stress and emotional disturbances among students at medical colleges are relatively common, and seemingly, this is a worldwide problem. Recently studies have reported high levels of stress among medical students. Objectives: To assess prevalence of perceived stress and find out sources of stress among undergraduate medical students. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study was conducted in a private medical college in Mangalore during March-August 2012. Data was collected with the help of self-administered questionnaire using “Perceived stress scale (PSS 14)”. Academic, health related and psychological stressors were assessed using a questionnaire containing 33 items. Logistic regression analysis was done to find out determinants of stressed cases. Results: Total 200 students completed the questionnaire. Overall prevalence of stress among study participants was found to be 42.5% (85 students out of 200). Female students reported higher prevalence of stress than males. Mean PSS score in the study population was 27.53 (95% CI: 26.4-28.7, SD = 7.01). Frequency of examination, performance in examination, academic curriculum were reported as important academic stressors. High parental expectations, lack of entertainment in the institution and quality of food in mess were reported as important psycho-social stressors by the students. Conclusion: High levels of perceived stress existed in the first and second year undergraduate medical students. The associations between stressed cases and occurrence of academic and psychosocial stressors needs to be further tested by prospective studies.
