Abstract The rainfall outputs from the latest convection-scale Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model are shown to provide an effective means of extending prediction lead times in flood forecasting. In this study, the performance of the WRF model in simulating a regional sub-daily extreme rainfall event centred over Beijing, China is evaluated at high temporal (sub-daily) and spatial (convective-resolving) scales using different domain configurations and spin-up times. Seven objective verification metrics that are calculated against the gridded ground observations and the ERA-Interim reanalysis are analysed jointly using subjective verification methods to identify the likely best WRF configurations. The rainfall simulations are found to be highly sensitive to the choice of domain size and spin-up time at the convective scale. A model run covering northern China with a 1 : 5 : 5 horizontal downscaling ratio (1.62 km), 57 vertical layers (less than 0.5 km), and a 60 h spin-up time exhibits the best performance in terms of the accuracy of rainfall intensity and the spatial correlation coefficient ( R ′). A comparison of the optimal run and the initial run performed using the most common settings reveals clear improvements in the verification metrics. Specifically, R ′ increases from 0.226 to 0.67, the relative error of the maximum precipitation at a point rises from −56 to −11.7 %, and the root mean squared error decreases by 33.65 %. In summary, re-evaluation of the domain configuration options and spin-up times used in WRF is crucial for improving the accuracy and reliability of rainfall outputs used in applications related to regional sub-daily heavy rainfall (SDHR).

Abstract In this study, three kinds of hourly precipitation series with the spatial resolution of 0.1° are used to analyze the climatological features and trends of extreme precipitation during the period of 1979–2012 in Beijing, China. The results show that: (1) the spatial distribution of median annual precipitation, with a range from 500 to 825 mm, is similar to that of local topography, which increases from the northwest to the southeast. Taking the urban area as a centre, the inter-annual precipitation in the Beijing area displays an outward decreasing tendency at the maximum rate of 125 mm per decade (125 mm × 10 a −1 ); (2) extreme precipitation amount, which accounts for 40–48% of total precipitation amount, has a similar spatial distribution to average annual precipitation; (3) the spatial distribution of extreme precipitation days and threshold estimated as the upper 95 percentile are significantly different from that of extreme precipitation, with maximum values concentrated on the urban area and the eastern mountain area, and minimum values in northwest; (4) extreme precipitation days (Ex_pd95) show an opposite distribution to extreme precipitation threshold (Ex_pv95), indicating that areas with greater precipitation threshold may has less precipitation days, and vice versa; (5) an apparent spatiotemporal decreasing tendency is detected in extreme precipitation amount. The downward tendencies are also found in extreme precipitation threshold. Unlike Ex_pv95, in most of the study area, Ex_pd95 is virtually unchanged; (6) downward trends of extreme precipitation is slightly smaller than that of annual precipitation, and the reducing amplitude of north-eastern areas are much higher than the areas in the southwest.

Abstract This study was designed to evaluate the effects of Macleaya cordata extracts (Chinese herbal medicine extracts) and antibiotics combination with chlortetracycline (CTC) on the antibiotic resistance genes in fecal microorganism. Compared with the group without antibiotics, the relative abundances of all six tetracycline resistance genes were increased after 75 mg kg⁻¹ CTC supplementation. Interestingly, M. cordata extracts in feed suppressed the increase of a part of tetracycline resistance genes in fecal microorganism of weaned pigs.

Abstract In this paper, two datasets, a long time series (1951–2012) of daily surface observations at one meteorological station and a shorter time series (1979–2012) of three-hourly data with 0.1°×0.1° spatial resolution were analysed by using non-parametric methods to identify annual and seasonal variations in surface humidity and temperature. The results reveal that: (1) saturation water vapour pressure increased exponentially with temperature. Actual daily values at Beijing Meteorological Station are very close to the theoretical values estimated by using the simplified Clausius-Clapeyron equation, but with seasonal variations. (2) For both long- and short-term data, clear increasing tendencies of annual saturation specific humidity and temperature are found. Decreasing and drying trends were detected for winter. (3) The annual relative humidity showed a decreasing trend except for some suburban areas, somehow related to the lower temperature and increased specific humidity in those areas. (4) Regional changes in topography and elevation likely influenced trends in surface humidity, while local land use showed little effect on it.

Abstract Spatiotemporal characteristics of extreme precipitation and temperature in Yunnan Province, China, were analyzed by using observed daily data at 28 meteorological stations from 1958–2013 in this study. Nine extreme precipitation indices and 6 extreme temperature indices were adopted, and the tendency of those indices was investigated by using Mann–Kendal test method. In order to distinguish the spatial characteristics, the region was divided into 5 regions according to climate and topography, then the characteristics of each region were compared each other. The results indicate that changes of extreme temperature are more sensitive and significant than those of precipitation. The contribution of extreme precipitation to total precipitation presented a significant upward trend, but the annual total wet-day precipitation (PRCPTOT) did not show significant changes. Both maximum and minimum temperature showed significant increasing tendency while there was not obvious changes for precipitation. The spatial features of extreme precipitation and temperature are similar. It was noted that extreme precipitation and temperature events occurred more frequently in central region where the risk of extreme climatic events was greater than other areas.

Abstract To increase the marker density and fine map the QTL underlying milk yield and composition within the region of 10~44 cM on BTA3 (Bos taurus autosome 3), we isolated 7 novel microsatellite loci between markers URB006 and DIK5036 based on the draft assembly of bovine genome sequence (Btau_4.0) using SSRHunter3.0 in combination with sequencing. Their polymorphisms were further examined in 1276 Holstein dairy cows. Abundant genetic variation at each microsatellite locus was revealed with the average observed allele number ranging from 7 to 18, HE from 0.32 to 0.86, and PIC from 0.30 to 0.85.

Abstract We search for gravitational-wave transients associated with gamma-ray bursts detected by the Fermi and Swift satellites during the first part of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (1 April 2019 15:00 UTC - 1 October 2019 15:00 UTC). 105 gamma-ray bursts were analyzed using a search for generic gravitational-wave transients; 32 gamma-ray bursts were analyzed with a search that specifically targets neutron star binary mergers as short gamma-ray burst progenitors. We describe a method to calculate the probability that triggers from the binary merger targeted search are astrophysical and apply that method to the most significant gamma-ray bursts in that search. We find no significant evidence for gravitational-wave signals associated with the gamma-ray bursts that we followed up, nor for a population of unidentified subthreshold signals. We consider several source types and signal morphologies, and report for these lower bounds on the distance to each gamma-ray burst.
