Abstract This study addresses the literature gap concerning accurately identifying vehicle carbon emission characteristics in high-altitude areas. Utilizing a portable emission measurement system (PEMS) for real-world testing, we quantified the influence of altitude on carbon emissions from light-duty gasoline (LDGV) and diesel vehicles (LDDV). The Random Forest (RF) algorithm was employed to analyze the complex nonlinear relationships between altitude, meteorological conditions, driving patterns, and carbon dioxide (CO

Abstract Aiming at regulating SO₂ emissions from ships, ship exhaust telemetry (SET) can be used as a low-cost and high-efficiency technology for the pre-detection of the S content of ship fuel. The sniffing method is the most accurate SET technology. In this study, eight SETs based on the sniffing method were built in Tianjin Port. The concentrations of CO₂, SO₂, and NOₓ in ship exhausts were monitored from 1 May to 31 August 2021. An automatic data algorithm was developed to identify peak signals of CO₂, SO₂, and NOₓ, calculate the S content of ship fuel, and trace emissions from ships. First, an automatic recognition algorithm for a gas-sniffing signal based on the incremental correlation threshold was established. Second, an automatic calculation algorithm for the S content of ship fuel based on the time series of SO₂ peak was generated. Finally, the traceability-locking algorithm for emissions from ships was created by calculating the plume path integral. The recognition rate of the wave-crest signal was demonstrated to be more than 95%, and the positioning error of the ship was estimated at ∼100 m, which could satisfy the accuracy requirements of ship identification. Overall, the peak data of the curves of the gas concentrations monitored (n = 24,292) were obtained during the four-month operation of the SETs. The detection rate of ship exhaust was 62.2%, and the emission reduction of SO₂ was 44.6 tons. The accuracy and validation of the algorithm were tested in surveillance practice in Tianjin Port. The SET and automatic data algorithm for SO₂ emissions significantly promoted the efficiency of supervision and the emission reduction of SO₂. Thus, a continuous online, unattended, and low-cost supervision strategy for the S content of ship fuel without boarding was established.

Abstract The ship exhaust sniffing unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system can be applied to monitor vessel emissions in emission control areas (ECAs) to improve the efficiency of maritime law enforcement and reduce ship pollution. To solve the problems of large size, heavy weight and high cost of ship exhaust sniffing sensors, in this paper, a unique diffused mini-sniffing sensor was designed, which provides a low-cost, lightweight, and highly adaptable solution for ship exhaust sniffing UAV. To verify the measurement accuracy of the system, a large number of on-site tests were performed based in the mouth of the Yangtze River, and some cases of violation of the fuel sulfur content (FSC) were verified and punished. Maritime law enforcement officers boarded the ship to take oil samples from eight suspected ships and sent them to the laboratory for testing. The results showed that the FSCs of the eight ships in chemical inspection were all greater than the regulatory limit 0.5% (m/m) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The system enables authorities to monitor emissions using rotary UAVs equipped with diffused mini-sniffing sensors to measure the FSC of navigating ships, which couple hardware and operational software with a dedicated lab service to produce highly reliable measurement results. The system offers an effective tool for screening vessel compliance.

Abstract With the aim to remove NOx from the lean-burn engine exhaust, a novel in-situ electrochemical device was designed using carbon black-based gas diffusion electrode (GDE) as cathode. Taking advantage of the excessive O2 from the exhaust, in-situ electro-generation of H2O2 from oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) under catalysis of the GDE could oxidize NOx to NO3−. The highest NOx removal efficiency was 77.7% for 1000 ppm NOx with energy consumption of 1.327 W cm−2 cm−3. The electrochemical NOx removal pathway was proposed that, as NO and O2 were adsorbed on different sites in the catalyst layer (CL), electro-generated H2O2 attacked the C―N adsorption bonds mostly in the nitro compounds to oxidize adsorbed NO to NO3−, while NO2 was directly oxidized by the produced H2O2 in the electrolyte. The NOx removal efficiency is mainly controlled by the NO adsorption rate as well as the H2O2 oxidation rate, and the former is the dominant factor. This in-situ electrochemical NOx removal system exhibited properties of energy-saving, low–cost and environmental compatibility, indicating great potential for industrial application.
