    Abstract This short communication reports a water inrush hazard during the construction of the Shijingshan Tunnel in Zhuhai, Guangdong, China. On 15 July 2021, a water inrush accident occurred at the construction site 1.16 km away from the tunnel entrance, resulting in 14 casualties. The purpose of this study is to investigate and discuss the water inrush process in this atypical case. The principal causes of this tunneling accident include the special geological conditions at the construction site, high hydraulic conductivity at the part that connects the underground water system and the overlying water body (the Jida Reservoir), and the impact of heavy rainfall. Moreover, four significant suggestions are proposed to prevent the possible occurrence of water inrush disaster: (1) assessing the risk level in areas prone to water inrush; (2) getting a comprehensive geological prediction based on borehole data and artificial intelligent methods; (3) establishing a monitoring system during the tunneling process; (4) strengthening the self-protection skills of construction workers.

    Abstract Anatase TiO 2 hierarchically structured microspheres with co-exposed {001}/{101} facets were prepared by a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. The influences of reaction temperature on the morphology and crystallization of microspheres were investigated systematically. The obtained microspheres possessed better morphology and crystallization when the reaction temperature was 160 °C. Different noble metals (Au, Ag, Cu, Pt, Pd) were used for the microspheres modification, and the experimental results exhibited that the photocatalytic activities of the noble metal modified microspheres were enhanced obviously, especially for the Pt-modified sample (TPt), which showed the highest photocatalytic activity in degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (the TPt sample showed the largest improvement, i.e., the activity reached 1.47 times higher than that of the bare sample) and hydrogen production (the largest improvement was also observed for the TPt sample, i.e., the activity was more than 30 times as the bare sample, reaching more than 300 μmol·g −1 ·h −1 ). Finally, a photocatalytic reaction mechanism involving the synergy of co-exposed {001}/{101} crystal facets with noble metals was proposed according to the as-obtained experimental results.

    Abstract The emergent constraint approach is a way of using multi-model ensembles to identify the linkage between current/past climate variability and future climate changes, which has been widely used for narrowing down the uncertainty of multi-model projections of future climate change. Climate models of the latest Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) show a much stronger Arctic warming signal but with a larger inter-model spread. In this study, we find that the projected Arctic warming made by multi-models in CMIP6 is positively correlated with the simulated global warming trend during the period of 1981–2011 in historical runs. This enables us to tighter constraints to future warming in the Arctic by using the observed global warming during the instrument era. The fact that CMIP6 models tend to overestimate the trend of global mean surface temperature during 1981–2011, therefore, would imply a relative weak Arctic warming compared to the CMIP6 median warming projection.

    Abstract Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) is the gold standard for diagnosing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, RT-PCR may yield false-positive results, leading to unnecessary countermeasures. Here, we report a “positive” nucleic acid test on a 10-pooled sample during the routine screening that caused many adverse societal effects, and financial and resource losses. However, they were subsequently determined to be a case of vaccine contamination. This case study increases awareness of false-positive RT-PCR results for SARS-CoV-2, especially when participants are vaccinators. Moreover, it could provide relevant suggestions to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.

    Abstract Heterocyclic compounds were widely used in many domains; pyrrolidone is a derivative of heterocycles that can be used to synthesize anticancer drugs. A new fluorine-containing rhopaladins’ analog(E)-2-(4-bromobenzoyl)-N-(tert-butyl)-4-(4-fluoro benzylidene)-5-oxo-1-propylpyrrolidine-2-carboxamide (RPDPD for short) of 2-aroyl-4-arylidene-5-oxopyrrolidine derivative was synthesized by the one-pot synthesis method and evaluated for its anti-tumor activity in vitro via CCK8 assay and annexin V/propidium iodide (PI) staining of HeLa cells. The results exhibited that compound RPDPD has inhibited the proliferation of HeLa in a dose-dependent manner with an IC50 of 24.23 μmol/L (p < 0.05) and has low hepatotoxicity with an IC50 of 235.6 μmol/L (p < 0.05) to normal hepatocyte LO2 cells. The apoptotic assay demonstrated that compound RPDPD has induced apoptosis in HeLa cells (from 14.26 to 23.4%, p < 0.05). qRT-PCR results showed that the compound RPDPD could inhibit the expression of oncogene E6/E7 mRNA (p < 0.05) of human papillomavirus (HPV). The results of Western blot showed that the compound RPDPD promoted the expression of TIMP3 protein and inhibited the expression of MMP3 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the compound RPDPD can inhibit the proliferation of cervical cancer cells and induce the apoptosis of cervical cancer cells, and its mechanism may be related to the inhibition of E6 mRNA and E7 mRNA expressions, and the anticancer effect of the compound RPDPD on cervical cancer is closely related to the TIMP3/MMP3 signaling axis.

    Abstract A series of γ-lactone derivatives (E)-4-arylidene-5-oxotetrahydrofuran derivatives were synthesized via a tandem Passerini 3CC/SN cyclization microwave-assisted one-pot method efficiently starting from Baylis Hillman acids, aryl glyoxals and isocyanides, and using ionic liquid as reaction medium. The products were characterized by hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-NMR), carbon nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (13C-NMR). Single crystal X-ray analysis of the compound RPDFB clearly confirmed its assigned chemical structures. Meanwhile, the effects of four compounds (RPDFB, RPDFC, RPDFI, RPDFJ) on the growth inhibition activity of Gibberella zeae were detected, and found that the compound RPDFB has significant growth inhibition activity to Gibberella zeae.

    Abstract Abstract Recent studies have reported that COVID-19 patients with lung cancer have a higher risk of severe events than patients without cancer. In this study, we investigated the gene expression of angiotensin I-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and transmembrane serine protease 2 (TMPRSS2) with prognosis in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC). Lung cancer patients in each age stage, subtype, and pathological stage are susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection, except for the primitive subtype of LUSC. LUAD patients are more susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection than LUSC patients. The findings are unanimous on tissue expression in gene and protein levels.

    Abstract Abstract Germacrone, curdione, and furanodiene have been shown to be useful in the treatment of breast cancer but the pharmacological mechanism of action is unclear. In this paper, we explored a new method to study the molecular network and function of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) herbs and their corresponding ingredients with bioinformatics tools, including PubChem Compound Database, BATMAN-TCM, SystemsDock, Coremine Medical, Gene ontology, and KEGG. Eleven targeted genes/proteins, 4 key pathways, and 10 biological processes were identified to participate in the mechanism of action in treating breast cancer with germacrone, curdione, and furanodiene. The information achieved by the bioinformatics tools was useful to interpretation the molecular mechanism for the treatment of germacrone, curdione, and furanodiene on breast cancers.

    Abstract Atherosclerosis (AS) is a systemic chronic disease affecting both the coronary and cerebral arteries. Inflammation plays a key role in the initiation and progression of AS, and numerous inflammatory factors have been proposed as potential biomarkers. This article reviews recent research in studies on major circulating inflammatory biomarkers to identify surrogates that may reflect processes associated with AS development and the risk of AS-related vascular events, such as Von Willebrand factor, lectin-like oxidized low-density-lipoprotein receptor-1, soluble urokinase plasminogen activator receptor, regulated upon activation, normal T-cell expressed and secreted, and microparticles, which may provide new perspectives for clinical AS evaluation and risk stratification.
