    Abstract The aim in mind in the construction of a zero-waste city is to recycle municipal solid waste in a more reasonable way in order to achieve the sustainable development of the urban environment. This goal is widely used internationally as a green development concept in urban management. However, when only the government takes the lead in the construction process, neglecting to engage and guide the participation of the public and of enterprises, the realization of a zero-waste city becomes challenging. Therefore, effective collaboration among all stakeholders would be a more effective approach to dealing with solid waste and creating an eco-friendly and livable urban environment. In this study, we adopted an evolutionary game model and selected three typical stakeholders—the government, the public, and enterprises—in order to examine the choice of tripartite strategies and their primary influencing factors based on prospect theory. This study found the following: (1) the selection of tripartite strategies at different stages of a zero-waste city’s construction is influenced by the expected benefits and costs; (2) the government’s leading role and related subsidies can promote the enthusiasm of enterprises and the public to participate in the construction of a zero-waste city; (3) tripartite participation in a zero-waste city’s construction can maximize benefits, and after a sustainable development model has been established, each stakeholder can choose to participate actively, even without government intervention; and (4) the construction of a zero-waste city requires long-term exploration and practice, and China is currently in a transition period from government-led to government-directed planning. Establishing a perfect reward and punishment mechanism is beneficial in promoting the active participation of the public and of enterprises.     Abstract Hierarchical heterostructures have emerged as promising candidates for the efficient photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics owing to their matched energy levels and tunable absorption bands. Herein, we report the facile synthesis of a heterojunction photocatalyst composed of basic bismuth nitrate (BiON) and BiOCl0.9I0.1 using a simple room-temperature hydrolysis method. Our results demonstrate that the BiON/BiOCl0.9I0.1 composite exhibits superior photodegradation performance compared to pure-phase materials owing to the catalytic enhancement at the heterointerface and the effective separation of the photogenerated carriers. Moreover, the unique three-dimensional microsphere morphology of the synthesized composite enhances its specific surface area and light absorption, further enhancing its photocatalytic activity. In the tetracycline (TC) photodegradation reaction as a model reaction, the catalyst could degrade 88% of TC in just 25 min. Overall, this work provides a promising strategy for the facile and low-cost synthesis of heterogeneous photocatalytic degradation materials.

    Abstract This study, drawing on the theoretical model of investment, explores what motivates and encourages international students studying Chinese as a second language (CSL) to invest in their Chinese learning using Q sorting and interview data collected from 15 international undergraduate students studying in mainland China. The results reveal that: (1) CSL students’ incentives for investment are intra-personally and inter-personally diverse and can be divided into three categories (multilingual posture and cultural capital-oriented, economic capital-oriented, and cultural capital and experience-oriented); (2) CSL students’ Chinese learning investment is dynamic, as they aim to enrich their learning and life experiences after studying Chinese for a period of time; (3) CSL students’ investment is apparently driven by multiple perceived benefits, in that utilitarian objectives (e.g., scholarships, employment opportunities, and educational qualifications) are characteristic of CSL students’ investment, but are also interwoven with some non-utilitarian objectives (e.g., enriching one’s experience and making friends). The findings have some implications for CSL education and future studies.

    Abstract Teachers’ emotions and professional identities in response to educational reforms play a key role in teacher development and policy implementation. However, little attention has been paid to the shifting emotions of teachers of LOTEs (languages other than English). Taking a social-psychological approach, this study examines the emotional reactions and professional identities of LOTE teachers who were inspired to cater for the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative. Semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis were used to probe the emotions and professional identities of 15 LOTE teachers in a Chinese foreign language university. The analysis identifies four categories of LOTE teachers’ identities: The enthusiastic accommodators, the lonely fighters, the drifting followers, and the passive executors. The findings indicate that current educational policies might lead to tensions among LOTE teachers without sufficient support, and suggest that the voices of LOTE teachers should be accommodated in the process of policy-making along with the affordances of support. The study reveals the necessity of adopting a social-psychological perspective on teacher development in the global multilingual educational context.

    Abstract Semantic segmentation is a fundamental but challenging problem of pixel-level remote sensing (RS) data analysis. Semantic segmentation tasks based on aerial and satellite images play an important role in a wide range of applications. Recently, with the successful applications of deep learning (DL) in the computer vision (CV) field, more and more researchers have introduced and improved DL methods to the task of RS data semantic segmentation and achieved excellent results. Although there are a large number of DL methods, there remains a deficiency in the evaluation and advancement of semantic segmentation techniques for RS data. To solve the problem, this paper surveys more than 100 papers in this field in the past 5 years and elaborates in detail on the aspects of technical framework classification discussion, datasets, experimental evaluation, research challenges, and future research directions. Different from several previously published surveys, this paper first focuses on comprehensively summarizing the advantages and disadvantages of techniques and models based on the important and difficult points. This research will help beginners quickly establish research ideas and processes in this field, allowing them to focus on algorithm innovation without paying too much attention to datasets, evaluation indicators, and research frameworks.

    Abstract Inflammation and proinflammatory cytokines have been implicated in the progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) is a proinflammatory cytokine. Our previous study found that MIF is highly expressed in BPH epithelium. It has been reported that there is a correlation between MIF and clinical BPH progression. However, whether MIF has an effect on BPH epithelial cells is not clear. The aim of this study was to explore whether MIF has a role in BPH. Our results showed that immunohistochemistry (IHC) showed that MIF is highly expressed in the epithelium and that MIF and PCNA expression levels are higher in BPH samples than in control. CCK8 and flow cytometry assays showed that recombinant human MIF (rMIF) promoted the proliferation of BPH-1 and PWR-1E cells, while ISO-1 partially reversed this effect on proliferation. JC-1 assays showed that rMIF inhibited the apoptosis of BPH-1 and PWR-1E cells, and ISO-1 could partially reverse this inhibition. Moreover, western blotting indicated that rMIF downregulated P53 and upregulated COX-2. Furthermore, MIF-induced proliferation could be inhibited by celecoxib in the CCK8 and flow cytometry assay. MIF-inhibited apoptosis could be partially reversed by celecoxib in the JC-1 assay. Western blotting showed that celecoxib could partially reverse MIF-induced COX-2 upregulation and P53 downregulation. Together, MIF is highly expressed in BPH epithelium. In vitro, MIF promoted BPH epithelial cell growth by regulating COX-2 and P53 signaling. Targeting MIF may provide a new option for the improved treatment of BPH in the future.

    Abstract In recent decades, the commodification of the English language has aroused intensive research interest in the sociolinguistics on a global scale, but studies on the commodification of the Chinese language are relatively rare. Most studies take a critical approach in relation to its adverse impacts on minority rights and social justice. This study examined the language landscape in Chiangmai, Thailand, and the linguistic beliefs of local Thai Chinese language learners. Based on their feedback, this study investigated the commodification of Chinese language education in the community of Chinese language learners in Chiangmai. We found that from a less critical perspective, the commodification of a second language provides more accessible and affordable educational opportunities for learners, especially those from low-income families, and at the same time language proficiency can broaden learners’ career choices and provide employees with additional value in industries, such as tourism, commerce, and services. This finding implies that language commodification, rather than typically being associated with linguistic imperialism and unbalanced socio-economic status, can be a contributing factor in promoting higher-education availability and social sustainability in certain circumstances. There may be some mediating factors between the commodification of language and changes in the sustainable balance of language, opening up space for future research to explore.

    Abstract Background Dendrobium officinale Kimura et Migo, a member of the genus Dendrobium, is a traditional Chinese medicine with high commercial value. The positive roles of UV-B radiation on active ingredient metabolism in various medicinal plants have been studied. However, the metabolic responses of D. officinale stems to UV-B treatment is largely unknown. Methods An untargeted metabolomics method was used to investigate the metabolic variations in D. officinale stems between the control and UV-B treatments. Results In total, 3,655 annotated metabolites, including 640 up- and 783 down-regulated metabolites, were identified and grouped into various primary metabolic categories. Then, a number of metabolites involved in the polysaccharide, alkaloid and flavonoid biosynthesis pathways were identified. For polysaccharide biosynthesis, several intermediate products, such as pyruvate, secologanate, tryptophan and secologanin, were significantly up-regulated by the UV-B treatment. For polysaccharide biosynthesis, many key fundamental building blocks, from the glycolysis, starch and sucrose metabolism, and fructose and mannose metabolism pathways, were induced by the UV-B treatment. For flavonoid metabolism, accumulations of several intermediate products of chalcone synthase, chalcone isomerase and flavanone 3-hydroxylase were affected by the UV-B treatment, indicating an involvement of UV-B in flavonoid biosynthesis. The UV-B induced accumulation of polysaccharides, alkaloids and flavonoids was confirmed by HPLC analysis. Our study will help to understand the effects of UV-B on the accumulation of active ingredients in D. officinale.
