    Abstract As data grows exponentially across diverse fields, the ability to effectively leverage big data has become increasingly crucial. In the field of data science, however, minority groups, including African Americans, are significantly underrepresented. With the strategic role of minority-serving institutions to enhance diversity in the data science workforce and apply data science to health disparities, the National Institute for Minority Health Disparities (NIMHD) provided funding in September 2021 to six Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) to improve their data science capacity and foster collaborations with data scientists. Meharry Medical College (MMC), a historically Black College/University (HBCU), was among the six awardees. This paper summarizes the NIMHD-funded efforts at MMC, which include offering mini-grants to collaborative research groups, surveys to understand the needs of the community to guide project implementation, and data science training to enhance the data analytics skills of the RCMI investigators, staff, medical residents, and graduate students. This study is innovative as it addressed the urgent need to enhance the data science capacity of the RCMI program at MMC, build a diverse data science workforce, and develop collaborations between the RCMI and MMC’s newly established School of Applied Computational Science. This paper presents the progress of this NIMHD-funded project, which clearly shows its positive impact on the local community.

    Abstract Since the formation of fouling reduces heat transfer efficiency and causes energy loss, anti-fouling is desirable and may be achieved by coating. In this work, a nickel-tungsten-phosphorus (Ni-W-P) coating was prepared on the mild steel (1015) substrate using electroless plating by varying sodium tungstate concentration to improve its anti-fouling property. Surface morphology, microstructure, fouling behavior, and heat transfer performance of coatings were further reported. Also, the reaction path, transition state, and energy gradient change of calcite, aragonite, and vaterite were also calculated. During the deposition process, as the W and P elements were solids dissolved in the Ni crystal cell, the content of Ni element was obviously higher than that of the other two elements. Globular morphology was evenly covered on the surface. Consequently, the thermal conductivity of ternary Ni-W-P coating decreases from 8.48 W/m·K to 8.19 W/m·K with the increase of W content. Additionally, it goes up to 8.93 W/m·K with the increase of heat source temperature 343 K. Oxidation products are always accompanied by deposits of calcite-phase CaCO 3 fouling. Due to the low surface energy of Ni-W-P coating, Ca 2+ and [CO 3 ] 2− are prone to cross the transition state with a low energy barrier of 0.10 eV, resulting in the more formation of aragonite-phase CaCO 3 fouling on ternary Ni-W-P coating. Nevertheless, because of the interaction of high surface energy and oxidation products on the bare matrix or Ni-W-P coating with superior W content, free Ca 2+ and [CO 3 ] 2− can be easy to nucleate into calcite. As time goes on, the heat transfer efficiency of material with Ni-W-P coating is superior to the bare surface.

    Abstract Nasogastric feeding tube plays an important role in administering enteral feeding and drug delivery for poststroke patients with consciousness disorders or poststroke dysphagia. Nevertheless, placement of nasogastric tubes is not without any risk of potential harm. Inadvertent malposition into the trachea or the distal tracheobronchial tree could induce severe pulmonary complications. As for poststroke patients with long-term dysphoria, such tubes have to be replaced periodically to prevent the overdue service of the tubes. Therefore, the risk of feeding tube misplacement into pulmonary system for these patients is increased. Here, we present a case of a 79-year-old poststroke patient with hydropneumothorax induced by malposition of nasogastric tube into the right pleura after routine replacement, accompanied by acute anterior wall myocardial infarction.

    Abstract With the more serious threats from complex electromagnetic environments, composites composed of conductive or semiconductive fillers and polymeric matrices could exhibit excellent nonlinear I-V characteristics, and have drawn significant attention in the field of overvoltage protection. In this research, graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) are decorated by ZnO and mixed into an epoxy resin (ER) matrix via solution blending to prepare composites. A characterization analysis and the I-V measurement results of the GNPs/ER composites indicate that ZnO nanoparticles are well bonded with GNPs and exhibit obvious nonlinear I-V behavior under proper applied voltage with high nonlinear coefficients. The switching threshold voltage and nonlinear coefficients could be controlled by adjusting the weight ratio of GNPs and ZnO of the filler. Moreover, compared with the poor recoverability of pure GNP-filled ER in previous research, the GNP-ZnO/ER composites exhibited excellent reversibility of nonlinear I-V behavior under multiple repetitive I-V measurements. And compared with different composites, the sample with a 1:8 weight ratio of GO to Zn(Ac) 2 presents the smallest variation of switching threshold voltage at 158 V, with a standard deviation of 1.27% from among 20 measurements, which indicates the best reversibility. Finally, the conducting mechanism of the reversible nonlinear I-V characteristic is investigated and analyzed.

    Abstract Background. Immune cells are tightly bound up with the pathogenesis of asthma. Besides T cells, B cells, macrophages, and mast cells, the mechanism of innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) in asthma is gradually explicit. As a kind of traditional Chinese medicine, Majie cataplasm realizes its potential in the clinical setting as an adjuvant for asthma. In our previous experiments, Majie cataplasm inhibits the increasing Th1 and Th2 in allergic asthma inflammation and reshapes a balance between Th1 and Th2. As ILCs are the reflection of Th cells in lung tissues, we will figure out whether Majie cataplasm could have similar effects on ILCs or not. Methods. A total of 40 female C57/BL6 mice were randomly divided into the control group (n = 10), the asthma model group (n = 10), the dexamethasone group (n = 10), and the Majie cataplasm group (n = 10). Except for the control group, mice were sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA) and excited to establish mice models of asthma. Lung tissue and splenic tissue were collected at 24 h after the last challenge with OVA, and the cell suspension of the lungs and spleen was prepared. The number of ILC1s, ILC2s, ILC3s, and NKs cells in the lungs and Tregs and B10s in the spleen were detected by flow cytometry (FCM). This was followed by simultaneous quantitative detection of 40 inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in the lung by a protein microarray. Results. The dexamethasone and Majie cataplasm could restore the number of ILC1s, ILC2s, and ILC3s in lung tissue. Compared with the control group, these cells remained unchanged in the asthma model group, while ILC1s (P<0.001, P<0.01), ILC2s (P<0.001, P<0.01), and ILC3s (P<0.01, P<0.05) were restored after the intervention of dexamethasone and Majie cataplasm. The number of NKs was low among the control group, the asthma model group, and the dexamethasone group, while the number of NKs rocketed in the Majie cataplasm group (P<0.0001).     Abstract The stereo integration of subway transportation with urban functions has promoted the transformation of urban space via extensive two-dimensional plans to intensive three-dimensional development. As sustainable development aspect, it has posed new challenges for the design of architectural space to be better environmental quality and low energy consumption. Therefore, subway station building complexes with high-performance designs should be a primary focus. Tubular space is a very common spatial form in subway station building complexes; it is an important space carrier for transmitting airflow and natural light. As such, it embodies the advantages of effectively utilizing natural resources, improving the indoor thermal and light environments, refining the air quality, and reducing energy consumption. This research took tubular space, which has a passive regulation function in subway station building complexes as its research object. It firstly established a scientific and logical method for verifying the value of tubular space by searching causal relationships among the parameterized building space information factors, occupancy satisfaction elements, physical environment comfort aspects, and climate conditions. Secondly, based on the actual field investigation, a database of physical environment performance data and users’ subjective satisfaction information was collected. Through the fieldwork results and analysis, the research thirdly concluded that the potential passive utilization of tubular space in subway station building complexes can be divided into two aspects: improvement in comfort level itself and utilization of climate between natural or artificial. Finally, three typical integrated design method for tubular spaces exhibiting high levels of performance and low amounts of energy consumption in subway station building complexes was put forward. This interdisciplinary research provides a design basis for subway station building complexes seeking to achieve high levels of performance and low amounts of energy consumption.

    Abstract Biological structures have excellent mechanical performances including lightweight, high stiffness, etc. However, these are difficult to apply directly to some given complex structures, such as automobile frame, control arm, etc. In this study, a novel bionic design method for skeleton structures with complex features is proposed by the bio-inspired idea of “main-branch and sub-branch”. The envelope model of a given part is established by analyzing the structural functions and working conditions, and the load path is extracted by the load-transferred law as the structural main-branch. Then, the selection criterion of bionic prototype is established from three aspects: load similarity, structural similarity and manufacturability. The cross-sections with high similarities are selected as the structural sub-branch. Finally, the multi-objective size optimization is carried out and a new model is established. The bionic design of a control arm is carried out by the method: structural main-branch is obtained by the load path analysis and structural sub-branch is occupied by the fish-bone structure. The design result shows that the structural stiffness is increased by 62.3%, while the weight is reduced by 24.75%. The method can also be used for other fields including automobile, aerospace and civil engineering.

    Abstract Asthma poses a threat to human health, and its pathogenesis is closely related to the neuroimmune system. Majie cataplasm can not only regulate the immune system but also the nervous system in asthma patients for its components. We speculate that Majie cataplasm may relieve asthmatic patients with sensitivity to hormone or not by regulating the body's neuroimmune system. Methods: In this experiment, a mouse model of asthma was well established by ovalbumin. The lung function of animals was examined and pathological changes in the lung tissue were assessed by hematoxylin-eosin staining. Serum immunoglobulin E (IgE), calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and neurokinin A (NKA) were measured by ELISA. The location of CGRP, CD3 and neutrophil in lung tissue and their expressions were detected by immunofluorescence staining. In addition, contents of CGRP mRNA, Substance P (SP) mRNA, interleukin (IL)-17 mRNA and interleukin(IL)-13 mRNA were detected by quantitative polymerase chain reaction. Results: Compared with the asthma model group, Majie cataplasm and dexamethasone can not only equivalently relieve airway hyperresponsiveness, but also make the content of serum IgE reduced. In addition, they can lower the content of serum CGRP and NKA after OVA stimulation, and this effect was more obvious for Majie cataplasm. Our results also showed that Majie Cataplasm and dexamethasone could inhibit the secretion of CGRP and the infiltration of T lymphocytes together with neutrophils in lung tissue and reduce expressions of CGRP mRNA, SP mRNA, IL-17 mRNA and IL-13 mRNA in lung tissue. Conclusion: Majie cataplasm effectively relieves expressions of neuropeptides such as CGRP, reduces the infiltration of immune cells in lung tissue, regulates the body's neuroimmune system, and has a therapeutic potential for both Th2 asthma and neutrophilic asthma.

    Abstract Using the melt polycondensation of five bio-based aliphatic monomers (succinic acid, sebacic acid, fumaric acid, 1,3-propanediol, and 1,4-butanediol), we first synthesized the more flexible and biodegradable polyester diols (BPD) with an average molecular weight of 3825. Then, the BPD was polymerized with excessive 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI). Finally, the molecular chain extender of 1,4-butanediol (BDO) was used to fabricate the biodegradable thermoplastic polyurethane elastomer (BTPU), comprising the soft segment of BPD and the hard segment polymerized by MDI and BDO. Atomic force microscope (AFM) images showed the two-phase structure of the BTPU. The tensile strength of the BTPU containing 60% BPD was about 30 MPa and elongation at break of the BTPU was over 800%. Notably, the BTPU had superior biodegradability in lipase solution and the biodegradation weight loss ratio of the BTPU containing 80% BPD reached 36.7% within 14 days in the lipase solution.

    Abstract Using novel biodegradable elastomer particles (BEP) prepared by the technologies of melt polycondensation, emulsification, and irradiation vulcanization, we successfully prepared advanced poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/BEP composites with higher toughness, higher biodegradability, and better cytocompatibility than neat PLA by means of the melt blending technology. The experimental results revealed that the elongation at break of the PLA/BEP composites containing 8 parts per hundred rubber (phr) by weight BEP increased dramatically from 2.9% of neat PLA to 67.1%, and the notched impact strength increased from 3.01 to 7.24 kJ/m 2 . Meanwhile, the biodegradation rate of the PLA/BEP composites increased dramatically in both soil environment and lipase solution, and the crystallization rate and crystallinity of the PLA/BEP composites increased significantly compared to those of neat PLA. The methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay also showed that the viability of L929 cells in the presence of extracts of PLA/BEP composites was more than 75%, indicating that the PLA/BEP composites were not cytotoxic and had better cytocompatibility than neat PLA. Research on advanced PLA/BEP composites opens up new potential avenues for preparing advanced PLA products, especially for advanced biomedical materials.
