Abstract Northern Chile sets an ideal laboratory to perform seismic experiments to better understand the subduction process in highly erosive margins. The Taltal segment (~22°S - ~26°S) has been subject of notable scientific attention; however, previous studies have mainly focused on the areas affected by large earthquakes, leaving unattended the processes in the overriding plate. By benefiting from a large temporary network of 84 short-period geophones and the high rate of seismicity in the region, we tectonically characterize the Taltal segment by deriving regional 3D Vp, Vs, and Vp/Vs velocity models, a seismic catalog of 23,000 earthquakes and focal mechanisms for events with M> 4.0. The seismic velocity models illuminate first-order structures such as the Nazca plate, the upper crust of the South American plate, and highlight changes from high to low ratios in the overriding plate that correlate with large-scale structures such as the Atacama fault system (AFS) in the coastline and the West Fault System (WFS) towards the Andes. In terms of the seismicity distribution, we observe a dip change, at intermediate depth (150-200 km), that could be associated with slab-pull activity. Coastal area shows clustered seismicity that might indicate splay faulting reaching the plate interface. Upper-crust activity is mainly related to the AFS and WFS but also to the circulation of fluids around the Lascar volcano. Finally, to get a comprehensive picture of the seismotectonics of the Taltal segment we explore the solutions of focal mechanisms that better describe the type of sources of the earthquakes.

Abstract Acute intoxications are frequent indications for an admission to an intensive care unit. Most intoxications are either related to suicidal behaviour or to drug overdose, mostly associated with an underlying substance abuse. A retrospective survey of 1172 intoxications in a medical emergency department in Stuttgart, the capital of Germany’s South-West-State - admissions of the years 1980, 1990, 2000 and 2010 - are analysed and examined for intoxication trends. After a significant increase of heroin intoxications between 1980 and 1990, we found a decrease of heroin intoxications in the following decades, most likely due to political and therapeutical implications and substitution policy. On the other hand we observed an alarming increase of intoxications with a combination of different drugs (often including new synthetic ones) in 2000 and 2010 and a shift towards relatively more female and also towards older patients. Implications for adjusting our medical and psychiatric treatment facilities and strategies are discussed.

Title translation Suicidality in mental illness – prevention and therapy.
Abstract The great majority of suicides and suicide attempts are related to mental illness. Special risk has been attributed to depression, psychosis, substance use, personality, and trauma-related disorders. Many affected persons seek medical attention prior to taking action. Primary care therefor plays an outstanding role in suicide prevention. Doctors should pay attention to potential risk constellations and actively address the issue. This paper presents possibly helpful models and instruments for everyday use. Most importantly, however, professionals’ empathy and time are required as well as appropriate decisions concerning a referral to a psychiatrist or psychiatric inpatient treatment.

Abstract An essential part of the world's remaining mineral resources is expected to reside deep in the crust or under post-mineralization cover. For porphyry copper deposits, the world's primary source of Cu, Mo, and Re, identifying the dynamic processes that control their emplacement in the upper crust can guide future exploration. Seismic tomography can constrain these processes through imaging deep-seated structures at the regional scale. Here we construct a three-dimensional model of the Vp/Vs ratio, based on arrival times of P and S seismic waves, beneath the Cerro Colorado porphyry Cu-(Mo) deposit in northern Chile. Our images show that low Vp/Vs (~ 1.55-1.65) anomalies, extending to ~ 5-15 km depth, coincide with the surface expression of known porphyry copper deposits and prospects, as well as delimit structures that host orebodies and related hydrothermal alteration zones. Medium Vp/Vs (~ 1.68-1.74) and high Vp/Vs (Vp/Vs ~ 1.85) bodies correspond to intermediate-felsic plutonic precursors for porphyry intrusions and mafic magma reservoirs that underlie shallower orebodies, respectively. Imaging these precursor and parental plutons is crucial to the identification of orebodies as they act as the source of fluids for porphyry copper generation. This study demonstrates the potential of local earthquake tomography as a tool to identify future deep mineral resources with minimal environmental impact.
