Abstract Essay 1: Export Duration and New Market Entry. This paper explores the relationship between prior export duration and new market entry within the same industry in a sample of 75 predominantly high- and middle-income countries. Using 3-digit level SITC manufacturing trade data for 1990-2008 I construct several measures of each country’s aggregate industry-specific export experience weighted by the relative likeliness to each potential destination market. I use two measures of similarity between existing and potential destination markets -- distance and differences in GDP per capita -- as two alternative weighting schemes. I then apply these aggregate duration measures to examine the likelihood of new export starts over 1994- 2008. I find that prior export duration increases the likelihood of new market entry within the same 3-digit level SITC industry but that this effect diminishes with time. My results suggest presence of previously unaccounted for industry-specific learning-by-exporting effects across destination markets. Essay 2: Cross-Industry Spillover Effects of Export Duration. This paper offers a first stab at identifying cross-industry spillover effects of export duration. Using 4-digit SITC industry level trade data for 89 countries over 1975-2000 I explore how the likelihood of a new trade relationship in a previously un-exported industry is affected by export duration in related industries. I consider three approaches in measuring cross- industry relatedness: cross-industry patent citation shares, an export outcomes –based measure developed by Hausmann and Klinger (2007) called “proximity,” and differences in industries’ 4-digit SITC classification codes. I then develop a range of export duration indexes based on these alternative measures of cross-industry relatedness and examine their role in new export entry. I find that while the value of export relationships in related industries has a significant and positive effect on new export entry, the effect of export relationship duration in related industries varies considerably across data samples and specifications. Essay 3: US Industry Characteristics and Import Duration. This paper examines the role of importing country’s industry characteristics in import flow hazard rates using detailed 6-digit level NAICS data for nearly 400 US manufacturing industries in 1989-2006. Applying survival analysis methodology I consider the following US industry characteristics: size, productivity, market structure, factor intensity and growth rate. While the main focus of this paper is on the relationship between domestic industry characteristics and the duration of import flows within the same 6-digit NAICS industry (horizontal linkage), I also explore the role of domestic industry characteristics in import duration of upstream industries (vertical linkage). I find that same-sector US industry characteristics can play an important role in import trade duration and that this effect is strongest for single import spells (import spells that occur only once over 1989-2006). In particular, I find that improvements in US industry productivity growth rates reduce import spell survival probabilities, especially in the case of single spells; that increases in US industry labor intensity reduce import flow hazard of both single and repeated import spells; and that high US industry growth rates can have an adverse effect on the duration of single import spells but not necessarily on that of repeated spells. The role of US industry characteristics in import duration of upstream industries is less clear.

Abstract We report a doubly resonant enhancement cavity (DREC) that can realize a simultaneous enhancement of two incoming laser beams at different wavelengths and different temporal structures. The double-resonance condition is theoretically analyzed, and different DREC locking methods are experimentally investigated. Simultaneous locking of a Fabry-Perot cavity to both an infrared (1064 nm) and its frequency-tripled ultraviolet (355 nm) pulses has been demonstrated by controlling the frequency difference between the two beams with a fiber-optic frequency shifter. The DREC technique enables novel applications of optical cavities to power enhancement of burst-mode lasers with arbitrary macropulse width and repetition rate.

Abstract Water scarcity is still a pressing issue in many regions. The application of membrane technology through water desalination to convert brackish to potable water is a promising technology to solve this issue. This study compared the performance of templated TEOS-P123 and ES40-P123 hybrid membranes for brackish water desalination. The membranes were prepared by the sol-gel method by employing tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) for the carbon-templated silica (soft template) and ethyl silicate (ES40) for the hybrid organo-silica. Both sols were templated by adding 35 wt.% of pluronic triblock copolymer (P123) as the carbon source. The silica-templated sols were dip-coated onto alumina support (four layers) and were calcined by using the RTP (rapid thermal processing) method. The prepared membranes were tested using pervaporation set up at room temperature (~25 °C) using brackish water (0.3 and 1 wt.%) as the feed. It was found that the hybrid membrane exhibited the highest specific surface area (6.72 m

Abstract A novel method to simultaneously extract the polarization state and relative spectral phase of an ultrashort laser pulse from an angle-multiplexed spatial-spectral interferometric measurement is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Spectral interference is produced between an arbitrary polarized signal pulse and two orthogonal linearly polarized reference pulses. The accuracy of this technique has been verified by reconstructing the known relative spectral phase arising from material dispersion and the known elliptical polarization state. Measurement of the relative spectral phase and the spatially variable polarization state of a radially polarized pulse is also demonstrated. An additional independent measurement of the spectral phase of reference pulses provides absolute spectral and temporal characteristics of the signal pulse.

Abstract This Letter reports on the first demonstration of laser-assisted H^{-} charge exchange for microsecond duration H^{-} beam pulses. Laser-assisted charge exchange injection is a breakthrough technology that overcomes long-standing limitations associated with the traditional method of producing high intensity, time structured beams of protons in accelerators via the use of carbon foils for charge exchange injection. The central theme of this experiment is the demonstration of novel techniques that reduce the laser power requirement to allow high efficiency stripping of microsecond duration beams with commercial laser technology.

Title translation The comparative characteristics of the physicochemical and structural-functional properties of hemoglobin in a number of vertebrates.
Abstract Using isoelectrofocusing within pH gradient 6-8, studies have been made on microheterogeneity of haemoglobins from various vertebrates. Phylogenetic evaluation of oxygen affinity of the main and minor electrophoretically pure haemoglobin fractions is given. It was shown that oxygen affinity of the haemoglobins is related to the ratio between dicarboxylic and basic amino acids.

Abstract A compact multifunctional optical correlator system for pulse width measurement of ultrashort ultraviolet (UV) pulses has been designed and experimentally demonstrated. Both autocorrelation and cross-correlation functions are measured using a single nonlinear crystal, and the switching between two measurements requires no adjustment of phase matching and detector. The system can measure UV pulse widths from sub-picoseconds to 100 ps, and it involves no auxiliary pulse in the measurement. The measurement results on a burst-mode picosecond UV laser show a high-quality performance on speed, accuracy, resolution, and dynamic range. The proposed correlator can be applied to measure any ultrashort UV pulses produced through sum-frequency generation or second-harmonic generation.
