    Abstract Lignin-containing nanocellulose (LNC) is a compelling alternative to traditional nanocellulose (NC), it offers enhanced yields and a reduction in the demand for toxic chemicals. This research involves the isolation of LNC from date palm waste using a green hydrolysis process and its subsequent characterization. The potential of using ionic liquids (ILs) as green solvents to isolate LNC has not yet been explored. Our findings suggest that 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Emim]Cl) can hydrolyze partially delignified and unbleached lignocellulose, achieving LNC synthesis. The obtained LNC showed a higher yield than its NC counterpart and exhibited rod-shaped fibers with nanoscale diameters and micrometer lengths, indicating a high aspect ratio. Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) results indicate average particle sizes of 143.20 nm for NC and 282.30 nm for LNC, with a narrow particle size distribution conforming their monodisperse behavior. Thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning calorimetry revealed high thermal stability (initial degradation temperature = 222.50 °C and glass transition temperature = 84.45

    Abstract Description Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in schizophrenia are often initially unrecognized or missed entirely in the diagnostic process. Sexual obsession is common in patients with schizophrenia. Therefore, identifying sexual obsession early in treatment has significant implications for appropriate multidisciplinary management and prognosis. We report the case of a Hispanic male in his 20s who presented with self-injurious behavior and worsening psychotic symptoms in the context of a recent diagnosis of schizophrenia and without a past diagnosis or historical symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). This report elucidates the importance of identifying the underlying cause of self-injurious behavior, which in this young man was due to new onset OCD presenting as sexual obsession comorbid with schizophrenia. Olanzapine, paroxetine, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) were administered with good therapeutic response.

    Abstract Fossil fuel substitutes are being developed to combat the ecological impact and rapid exhaustion of petroleum-based products. Being the most abundant polymer on Earth, cellulose-based products are renewable and sustainable. Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are derived from cellulosic-based materials, have good physicochemical properties, and can be used to produce numerous products. CNC synthesis and their applications have been extensively studied; however, they remain limited to laboratory-scale as several challenges hinder its commercial-scale production. Herein, the suitability of nanocrystalline isolation methods, including chemical, enzymatic, ionic liquids, and deep eutectic solvents, for mass production is evaluated. Poor re-dispersion of CNCs is a major challenge that hinders its utilization in many applications. Hence, surface chemistry modification of CNCs have also been reviewed. It has been concluded that the CNC isolation method and surface modification technique significantly impacts its cost, morphology, and physicochemical properties. This review paper presents the challenges often faced in the conversion of bench-scale studies into commercial production of nanocrystalline cellulose. Hence, this paper gives all the necessary information on the important aspects of raw material selection, nanocellulose isolation process selection, and suitable surface modification method together in a single review article. Readers will be able to identify the possible research gaps for future research studies.

    Abstract Metal-organic frameworks (MOF(n)) are organic-inorganic hybrid crystalline porous materials that consist of a regular array of positively charged metal ions surrounded by organic ‘linker’ molecules. The metal ions form nodes that bind the arms of the linkers together to form a repeating, cage-like structure. Moreover, in a chemical structure or molecular graph, edges and vertices are known as bonds and atoms, respectively. Metric dimension being a subsets of atoms with minimum cardinality is used in the substrcturing of the chemical compounds in the molecular structures. Fractional metric dimension is weighted version of metric dimension that associate a numeric value to the identified subset of atoms. In this paper, we have computed the fractional metric dimension of metal organic framework (MOF(n)) for n ≡ 0(mod)2.

    Abstract Going beyond 'dendritic democracy', we introduce a 'democracy of local processors', termed Cooperator. Here we compare their capabilities when used in permutation-invariant neural networks for reinforcement learning (RL), with machine learning algorithms based on Transformers, such as ChatGPT. Transformers are based on the long-standing conception of integrate-and-fire 'point' neurons, whereas Cooperator is inspired by recent neurobiological breakthroughs suggesting that the cellular foundations of mental life depend on context-sensitive pyramidal neurons in the neocortex which have two functionally distinct points. We show that when used for RL, an algorithm based on Cooperator learns far quicker than that based on Transformer, even while having the same number of parameters.

    Abstract Introduction: Mass incarceration, particularly of the mentally ill, continues to pervade our criminal justice system. Jails in many areas have become the largest mental health facilities, especially in large urban communities, despite increasing societal recognition that those with mental illness are not best served behind bars. Misdemeanors are an often-overlooked contributor to mass incarceration, and may be preventable for those with chronic severe mental illness.
    Methods: This Northeast Florida pilot program, the Mental Health Offenders Program (MHOP), is based on the successful Miami Eleventh Circuit Court Criminal Mental Health Project. MHOP provided pretrial release from custody, through diversion with a customized plan of care to stabilize defendants, using court supervision to ensure compliance.
    Results: With community partners, the MHOP pilot enrolled 20 individuals with chronic severe mental illness and recurrent misdemeanor charges; 15 were able to continue in the program with stabilization of their mental health and reduction of county costs both documented.
    Conclusion: The MHOP pilot demonstrates that community resources can be successfully shifted to benefit mentally ill, non-violent offenders and the larger community by helping severely mentally ill clients achieve stability by providing healthcare, housing, and income, while decreasing costs for the community in a humane way.

    Abstract The semiconductor/insulator blends for organic field-effect transistors are a potential solution to improve the charge transport in the active layer by inducing phase separation in the blends. However, the technique is less investigated for long-chain conducting polymers such as Poly[2,5-(2-octyldodecyl)-3,6-diketopyrrolopyrrole-alt-5,5-(2,5-di(thien-2-yl)thieno [3,2-b]thiophene)] (DPPDTT), and lateral phase separation is generally reported due to the instability during solvent evaporation, which results in degraded device performance. Herein, we report how to tailor the dominant mechanism of phase separation in such blends and the molecular assembly of the polymer. For DPPDTT/PMMA blends, we found that for higher DPPDTT concentrations (more than 75%) where the vertical phase separation mechanism is dominant, PMMA assisted in the self-assembly of DPPDTT to form nanowires and micro-transport channels on top of PMMA. The formation of nanowires yielded 13 times higher mobility as compared to pristine devices. For blend ratios with DPPDTT ≤ 50%, both the competing mechanisms, vertical and lateral phase separation, are taking place. It resulted in somewhat lower charge carrier mobilities. Hence, our results show that by systematic tuning of the blend ratio, PMMA can act as an excellent binding material in long-chain polymers such as DPPDTT and produce vertically stratified and aligned structures to ensure high mobility devices.

    Abstract Drug delivery techniques based on polymers have been investigated for their potential to improve drug solubility, reduce systemic side effects, and controlled and targeted administration at infection site. In this study, we developed a co-polymeric hydrogel composed of graphene sheets (GNS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and chitosan (CS) that is loaded with methotrexate (MTX) for in vitro liver cancer treatment. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to check the structural properties and surface morphology. Moreover, tests were conducted on the cytotoxicity, hemolytic activity, release kinetics, swelling behaviour and degradation of hydrogels. A controlled release of drug from hydrogel in PBS at pH 7.4 was examined using release kinetics. Maximal drug release in six hours was 97.34%. The prepared hydrogels did not encourage the HepG2 growth and were non-hemolytic. The current study highlights the potential of GNS-based hydrogel loaded with MTX as an encouraging therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma. HepG2 cell viability of MTX-loaded CS-PVA-GNS hydrogel was (IC50 5.87 µg/200 mL) in comparison to free MTX (IC50 5.03 µg/200 mL). These outcomes recommend that hydrogels with GNS ensure improved drug delivery in cancer microenvironment while lessening adverse consequences on healthy cells.
