Abstract The choices that researchers make while conducting a statistical analysis usually have a notable impact on the results. This fact has become evident in the ongoing research of the association between the environment and the evolution of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, in light of the hundreds of contradictory studies that have already been published on this issue in just a few months. In this paper, a COVID-19 dataset containing the number of daily cases registered in the regions of Catalonia (Spain) since the start of the pandemic to the end of August 2020 is analysed using statistical models of diverse levels of complexity. Specifically, the possible effect of several environmental variables (solar exposure, mean temperature, and wind speed) on the number of cases is assessed. Thus, the first objective of the paper is to show how the choice of a certain type of statistical model to conduct the analysis can have a severe impact on the associations that are inferred between the covariates and the response variable. Secondly, it is shown how the use of spatio-temporal models accounting for the nature of the data allows understanding the evolution of the pandemic in space and time. The results suggest that even though the models fitted to the data correctly capture the evolution of COVID-19 in space and time, determining whether there is an association between the spread of the pandemic and certain environmental conditions is complex, as it is severely affected by the choice of the model.

Abstract Four episodic syndromes are recognized in the current version of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (ICHD): cyclic vomiting syndrome (CVS); abdominal migraine; benign paroxysmal vertigo; benign paroxysmal torticollis. Previously called childhood periodic syndromes, they are thought to be early expressions of a migrainous spectrum. They usually occur in childhood or adolescence and some of these patients will develop migraine later in childhood or in adulthood. More rarely, some of these disorders, in particular CVS and abdominal migraine, can persist or even begin at adulthood. The concept of episodic syndromes associated with migraine in adults is relatively recent, recognized for the first time in the version III-beta of the ICHD (2013). It is important for the adult neurologist to recognize the clinical pattern of these disorders. Lack of knowledge of these disorders often leads to delayed diagnosis, and a large number of complementary tests. Treatments are often borrowed from migraine abortive and preventive treatments. This review summarizes the characteristics of episodic syndromes and is particularly focused on data in adults.

Abstract Common methods for hold-up time and volume determination in Reversed-Phase Liquid Chromatography (RPLC) have been tested for Hydrophilic Interaction Liquid Chromatography (HILIC). A zwitterionic ZIC-HILIC column has been used for the testing. The pycnometric determination method, based on differences in column weight when filled with water or organic solvent, provides the overall volume of solvent inside the column. This includes the volume of eluent semi-sorbed on the packing of the column, which acts as the main stationary phase. The homologous series approach, based on the retention behavior of homologues in relation to their molecular volume, allows the determination of accurate hold-up volumes. However, the application of this method is time-consuming. In some cases, large neutral markers with poor dipolarity/polarizability and hydrogen bonding interactions can be used as hold-up volume markers. This is the case of dodecylbenzene and nonadecane-2-one in clearly HILIC behaving chromatographic systems, the use of decanophenone as a marker can be even extended to the boundary between HILIC and RPLC. The elution volume of the marker remains nearly unaffected by the concentration of ammonium acetate in the mobile phase up to 20 mM. The injection of pure solvents to produce minor base-line disturbance as hold-up markers is strongly discouraged, since solvent peaks are complex to interpret and depend on the ionic strength of the eluent.
