Abstract J- and H-aggregates of π-conjugated dyes are particularly interesting because of their unique optical and excitonic properties. However, control of the size and morphology of J- and H-aggregates remains a challenge. Here, we report the coassembly of lithocholic acid (LCA) and 3,3′-diethylthiacarbocyanine iodide (DiSC₂(3)) into H-aggregate nanotubes through helical H-aggregate nanoribbons as a precursor in 30% ammonia solution. As the ammonia evaporates, H-aggregate nanotubes transition into flat J-aggregate nanoribbons. The electronic properties of H-aggregate nanotubes and J-aggregate nanoribbons are studied by integrating them with interdigitated gold electrodes. We find that H-aggregate nanotubes form a Schottky junction and J-aggregate nanoribbons form Ohmic contact. In the temperature range from 18 to 28 °C, the resistance of the H-aggregate nanotubes is nearly constant, whereas the resistance of the J-aggregate nanoribbons significantly increases with the increase of temperature. Our findings provide a new strategy for controlling the formation of H-aggregate nanotubes and J-aggregate nanoribbons, which can serve as smart building blocks in electronic and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract Conductive polymer (CP) nanotubes are fascinating nanostructures with high electrical conductivity, fast charge/discharge capability, and high mechanical strength. Despite these attractive physical properties, progress in the synthesis of CP nanotube hydrogels is still limited. Here, we report a facile and effective approach for the synthesis of polypyrrole (PPy) nanotube hydrogels by using the weakly interconnected network of self-assembled nanotubes of lithocholic acid as a soft template. The PPy nanotube hydrogels are then converted to aerogels by freeze drying, in which PPy nanotubes form elastic and conductive networks with a density of 38 mg/cm

Abstract Silica–titania (SiO2–TiO2) aerogel beads are synthesized by a single-step sol–gel reaction, followed by supercritical drying. The SiO2–TiO2 aerogel beads consist of nanoparticles, which interconnect to form mesoporous networks. The TiO2 nanoparticles distributed in the mesoporous networks have anatase phase. The SiO2–TiO2 aerogel beads with large adsorption capacities and high photocatalytic activities can efficiently remove Rhodamine B (RhB) from water. They can be easily recovered from the reaction solution and retain excellent removal capabilities even after several successive adsorption–photodegradation cycles.

Abstract Postoperative diet advancement in patients undergoing elective small bowel or colorectal surgery by general surgeons (GSs) and colorectal surgeons (CRSs) was prospectively evaluated. Demographic (age and gender), disease location (small bowel or colorectum), surgical approach (laparoscopic or open), and surgeon characteristics (GS or GRS) were tabulated. Postoperative feeding after surgery on postoperative Day (POD) 1 was assessed. Operations involved the colorectum (n=43 [72%]) or small bowel (n=17 [28%]) and were performed using laparoscopy (n=38 [63%]) or open (n=22 [37%]) techniques. Operations were performed by GSs (n=30) or CRSs (n=30). Early feeding was ordered on POD 1 on 34 patients (57%). The remaining 26 patients (43%) were kept nothing by mouth. Factors associated with early feeding included age younger than 50 years (P=.004), surgery done by CRSs (P<0.0001), operations on the colorectum (P=0.04), and laparoscopic surgery (P=0.07). Multivariable analysis revealed that age younger than 50 years (odds ratio [OR], 9.5; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.8 to 52; P=0.01), surgery done by CRSs (OR, 16.3; 95% CI, 3.4 to 79.6; P=0.001), and use of laparoscopic surgery (OR, 12; 95% CI, 2.1 to 67; P=0.007) were associated with early postoperative feeding. Early postoperative feeding does not appear to be applied commonly in clinical practice. Younger patient age, surgery done by CRSs, and laparoscopy are associated with the use of early postoperative feeding after elective intestinal surgery.
