Abstract Lock-free data structures are an important tool for the development of concurrent programs as they provide scalability, low latency and avoid deadlocks, livelocks and priority inversion. However, they require some sort of additional support to guarantee memory reclamation. The Optimistic Access (OA) method has most of the desired properties for memory reclamation, but since it allows memory to be accessed after being reclaimed, it is incompatible with the traditional memory management model. This renders it unable to release memory to the memory allocator/operating system, and, as such, it requires a complex memory recycling mechanism. In this paper, we extend the lock-free general purpose memory allocator LRMalloc to support the OA method. By doing so, we are able to simplify the memory reclamation method implementation and also allow memory to be reused by other parts of the same process. We further exploit the virtual memory system provided by the operating system and hardware in order to make it possible to release reclaimed memory to the operating system.

Abstract Introduction and importance: Diverticula are sac-shaped formations resulting from the inward folding of the intestinal wall's lining. While they predominantly occur in the colon, they can manifest in other parts of the gastrointestinal tract, with jejunal diverticulum being the most prevalent. Symptoms are infrequent in most cases, and when they do occur, intestinal perforation is the most severe complication. In such instances, prompt surgical intervention is imperative, typically entailing the excision of the affected intestinal segment, followed by a end-to-end anastomosis.
Case presentation: A 75-year-old female patient presented at the emergency department with sharp abdominal pain. Imaging revealed the presence of perforated jejunal diverticula. Diagnostic laparoscopy confirmed a perforated jejunal diverticulum along with generalized peritonitis and multiple diverticula in the same region. Consequently, we performed a segmental intestinal resection and anastomosis.
Clinical discussion: Jejunal diverticulosis, a rare condition primarily affecting the elderly, is found in 0.5-2.3 % of imaging studies. Although its exact cause remains elusive, potential contributing factors include abnormal intestinal movements and elevated gut pressure. Symptoms are generally vague, such as abdominal discomfort. Diagnosis often occurs incidentally during imaging, leading to a high mortality rate when complications occurs. While computed tomography (CT) scans are useful for detecting intestinal wall protrusions, definitive diagnosis typically requires laparoscopy or laparotomy. Treatment varies based on symptoms and complications, with surgery often necessary for perforations or when medical treatment fails.
Conclusion: Jejunal diverticulosis is often asymptomatic or displays non-specific symptoms. Timely diagnosis and prompt surgical intervention in case of perforation is crucial.

Abstract Metasarcidae Kury, 1994 (Gonyleptoidea) is exclusively distributed in the Andean region of South America, from northern Peru to southern Bolivia. This contribution reviews the family using traditional taxonomy and cladistics. The cladistic analysis is based on total evidence (TE), maximum likelihood (ML) and direct optimization of molecular and morphological characters. The data matrix is composed of DNA sequences from three mitochondrial loci (12S rRNA, 16S rRNA and COI), from two nuclear loci (28S rRNA and H3) and 68 phenotypic characters. The dataset consists of 25 ingroup terminals (representing 20 species of the family) and eight outgroup species. The parsimony analysis resulted in one most parsimonious tree (L=4910) that recovered a monophyletic Metasarcidae, sister-group of Cosmetidae. As a result of the taxonomic revision and cladistic hypothesis, a new classification is proposed with six genera and 38 valid species of Metasarcidae, of which two genera and 20 species are described for the first time. Additionally, the following are established: six generic name synonymies; four species synonymies; seven new species combinations; and three secondary homonym species names replaced.

Abstract While the current COVID-19 pandemic continues to wreak havoc on human health and national economies, conservationists are struggling to prevent misguided persecution of bats, which are misleadingly being blamed for spreading the disease. Although at a global level, such persecution is relatively uncommon, even a few misguided actions have the potential to cause irrevocable damage to already vulnerable species. Here, we draw on the latest findings from psychology, to explain why some conservation messaging may be reinforcing misleading negative associations. We provide guidelines to help ensure that conservation messaging is working to neutralize dangerous and unwarranted negative-associations between bats and disease-risk. We provide recommendations around three key areas of psychological science: (i) debunking misinformation; (ii) counteracting negative associations; and (iii) changing harmful social norms. We argue that only by carefully framing accurate, honest, and duly contextualized information, will we be able to best serve society and present an unbiased perspective of bats. We hope this guidance will help conservation practitioners and researchers to develop effective message framing strategies that minimize zoonotic health risks and support biodiversity and its associated ecosystem services.

Abstract Giant water bugs (Hemiptera: Belostomatidae) are key predators in freshwater ecosystems and have been reported to feed on several species of vertebrates, including fishes, amphibians and reptiles. Here, we report the opportunistic predation of an adult female vesper bat (Afronycteris nana) by a giant water bug (Lethocerus cordofanus) in a temporary pond in a rice paddy in Guinea‐Bissau, West Africa. To our best knowledge, this is the first instance of natural predation upon a mammal by a giant water bug to be documented in a scientific report.

Abstract In this work, the fracture behaviour of repaired honeycomb/carbon-epoxy sandwich panels under edgewise compression and three-point bending loading was analysed. Assuming the occurrence of damage resulting from a complete perforation leading to an open hole, the followed repair strategy consists of plug filling the core hole and considering two scarf patches with an angle of 10° in order to repair the damaged skins. Experimental tests were performed on undamaged and repaired situations in order to address the alteration in the failure modes and assess the repair efficiency. It was observed that repair recovers a large part of the mechanical properties of the corresponding undamaged case. Additionally, a three-dimensional finite element analysis incorporating a mixed-mode I + II + III cohesive zone model was performed for the repaired cases. Cohesive elements were considered in the several critical regions prone to damage development. The failure modes and the resultant load-displacement curves obtained numerically were compared with the experimental ones. It was concluded that the numerical model is suitable for estimating the fracture behaviour of sandwich panel repairs.

Abstract Purpose: Peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) is a crucial health marker, extensively studied in adults for its prognostic value. However, its significance in the older persons, especially octogenarians, remains underexplored due to limited representation in research. This study aims to assess the predictive power of VO2peak for survival in individuals aged 80 and above.
Methods: We included individuals aged 80 or older who underwent cardiopulmonary exercise tests at a single center. Mortality rates were compared based on VO2peak relative to 80% of predicted values (%VO2peak). We employed three multivariate Cox regression models: Model 1 (unadjusted), Model 2 (adjusted for age) and Model 3 (adjusted for age and stroke).
    Results: Among 188 participants (mean age 83.3 ± 3 years, 68.9% male), 22 (11.7%) passed away during a median follow-up of 494 days. Non-survivors tended to be older with lower VO2peak and %VO2peak. All models demonstrated associations between %VO2peak ≤ 80% and mortality: HR = 3.19 (95% CI: 1.30-7.86, p = 0.011) for M1; HR = 3.12 (95% CI: 1.26-7.74, p = 0.013) for M2 and HR = 2.80 (95% CI: 1.11-7.06, p = 0.028) for M3.
Conclusion: In the context of an aging population, this study underscores the enduring significance of VO2peak as a survival predictor among the older person, including octogenarians. These findings carry profound implications for tailoring healthcare strategies to address the evolving demographic landscape.
