Abstract This paper investigates the apparent paradox of the mid 2000's sharp reduction in the deforestation of the Brazilian Amazon that happened alongside fast growing commodity markets. Particular attention is given to the role played by PPCDAM, an environmental policy introduced by the federal government in 2004. We use a panel of 760 Amazon municipalities and 15 years to estimate the effects of well-known drivers in the deforestation process, such as cattle herd and soybean crops, as well as the effect of the conservation policy. The results suggest that the policy not only had a direct effect of reducing deforestation, but also rendered deforestation less sensitive to fluctuations in the Amazon commodity production. We also perform a counterfactual exercise, estimating the levels of deforestation that would have been registered, had the policy not existed. We estimate that the plan saved a total of 196 thousand square kilometers of forest between 2005 and 2015, corresponding to almost twice the total amount of deforestation observed during this period, and 4.9% of the entire Brazilian Amazon forest.

Abstract The osseodensification (OD) technique differs from conventional milling for dental implant installation in that it preserves the prepared bone and compacts it toward the apex and lateral walls of the socket, resulting in bone compaction. By enabling autografting, bone expansion, and high implant insertion torques, OD has become an increasingly popular option. The aim of this clinical case report is to demonstrate the predictability of combining OD with guided bone and tissue regeneration (GBR/GTR) techniques for bone expansion in the maxilla with reduced thickness, while avoiding other reconstructive surgeries. The report presents the treatment of a 32-year-old female patient who had cosmetic concerns regarding the anterior maxillary region. The patient was using an adhesive prosthesis with pontic on tooth 13 fixed between teeth 12 and 14. After the case was planned, it was decided that bone expansion in the region would be performed using the OD technique. The implant installation (AR Torque, 3.5 × 11.5 mm, Conexão®) and guided bone regeneration (GBR) were done with the assistance of L-PRF (Stick Bone, associated with L-PRF membrane). Following the osseointegration period, a provisional resin crown was fabricated, and a collagen matrix membrane (Mucoderm®) was used to increase vestibular soft tissue volume and shape the patient's gingival profile. After a period of 120 days, the final crown was created and observed for a span of 5 years. The results showed stability of the case along with maintaining its esthetic and satisfactory function. The use of the osseodensification technique coupled with a connective tissue graft substitute has been anticipated for a long time. It has proven to be an excellent alternative to autogenous grafts.

Abstract The first element legislated adopting chemical speciation was chromium (Cr) for differentiation between the highly toxic Cr(VI) from the micronutrient Cr(III). Therefore, this work aimed to develop a new analytical method through the coupling of High-Performance Liquid Chromatography with Diode-Array Detection (HPLC-DAD) with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to obtain molecular and elemental information simultaneously from a single sample injection. In the first step, a low-cost flow split made of acrylic was developed aiming at optimally directing the sample to the detectors, enabling the HPLC-DAD/ICP-MS coupling. After the extraction of Certified Reference Materials (CRM of natural water NIST1640a and sugar cane leaf agro FC_012017), the recoveries determined by ICP-MS were 99.7% and 85.4%, respectively. Then, the method of HPLC-DAD/ICP-MS was applied for real samples of the CRMs. The presence of possible biomolecules associated with Cr(III) and Cr(VI) species was evaluated, with the simultaneous response detection of molecular (DAD) and elementary (ICP-MS) detectors. Potential biomolecules were observed during the monitoring of Cr(VI) and Cr(III) in sugar cane leaves, water samples and a supplement of Cr picolinate. Finally, the article also discusses the potential of the technique applied to biomolecules containing other associated elements and the need of more bioanalytical methods to understand the presence of trace elements in biomolecules.

Abstract This work aimed to compare the visual patterns of under 16 (U16) athletes and professional basketball players. The sample was composed of 10 U16 (aged 15.2 ± 0.4 years; 7.1 ± 2.5 years of experience) and 10 professional (aged 27.6 ± 3.7 years; 18.4 ± 4.6 years of experience) basketball players. All athletes were males and right-handed. Each participant performed 50 jump shots from 10 different positions and 5 different angle shots (0°, 45°, 90°, 135° and 180°). Number of fixations, time of first and last fixation, total fixation duration and Quiet Eye (QE) time of all shots were analysed. Overall, results indicated that the U16 group showed greater within-group differences regarding shot positions, last fixation times, shot angles, and first and last fixation times. Additionally, the U16 group presented different visual strategies than those of professional players, with significant differences found for shooting positions and shot angles, particularly for shots performed on the left side of the field, and for QE times. In conclusion, our results add to the understanding that longer fixation times and longer QE time are associated with better jump-shot efficacy, and this relation is evident when comparing players of different age groups.

Abstract At the beginning of 2020, feelings of fear and uncertainty spread throughout the world after the novel coronavirus rapid propagation. The world was not ready to face such a situation. Countries implemented emergency measures to contain it, which included social distancing and shutting down the economy. Social and economic impacts were unpredictable. This manuscript aims to present the application of a remote scenario planning method that identifies threats, opportunities, and subsidies to a strategic evaluation in a short term. The main results identified 15 key trends, four critical uncertainties, four scenarios, ten opportunities, and 13 threats. They were debated and presented to some Brazilian organizations' decision-makers to help develop strategies to curb the aftermath of COVID-19. Our findings show that it is possible to use this agile method to build consistent and coherent scenarios that support the decision-making process. Part of the experts said that participating in the process was essential to comprehend it better. The process also contributed to their learning process and their organization on anticipatory strategy thinking concerning possible future. They agree that the scenarios were relevant, defiant, and plausible and incorporated meaningful events and real challenges to their organizations' strategy formulation or decision-making.

Abstract We studied the impact of field temperature on the emergence of Telenomus podisi Ashmead (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) after being released as either protected (encapsulated) or unprotected pupae close to adult emergence. Two independent bioassays (protected pupae vs. unprotected pupae) were carried out in a randomized block experimental design in a 2 (parasitoid rearing temperature regimes) ×4 (release positions within plant canopy) factorial scheme. One of the T. podisi colonies was reared at a constant temperature (25 °C) and 12:12 h L:D (Light: Dark) photoperiod. The second T. podisi colony was reared at fluctuating temperatures (20 °C during 12 h D and 30 °C during 12 h of L). Each bioassay had five replicates. Each replicate contained 40 pupae from each rearing temperature and release position within plant canopy. Parasitoid pupae were released in the bottom third, middle third, or upper third of the plant's canopy, as well as between planting lines. Each bioassay was repeated six times (in different plant developmental stages: R

Abstract Biomonitoring programs have developed in the last decades, including the toxicity evaluation of endemic organisms in populations from polluted areas. Environmental bioindicators respond to contaminants as predictors of future damage to their population, ecosystem and human. Amphibian are considered very sensitive contamination bioindicators. Researchers in several continents have conducted ecological studies on the accumulation of potentially toxic elements in anuran tissues, especially in mining and agriculture areas. The Jaguaribe River is an important water source in northeastern Brazil, home of agriculture irrigated perimeters; but it also concerns users for increasing the risks of environmental contamination. The objective of this work was to quantify potentially toxic elements in Leptodactylus macrosternum carcasses, evaluating its potential as a contamination bioindicator of agrosystem areas in the Lower Jaguaribe River basin, Ceará, northeastern Brazil. The elements As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were detected in the L. macrosternum carcasses' samples. There was no significant difference in the concentrations of detected metals by area status; however, analysis of variance suggested that individuals had more constant exposure to Cu, Ni, Cd and Pb in cultivated area status. The cluster analysis of chemicals indicated two optimal element groups, which proposed different compounds from diverse origins. Body index significantly influenced Mn and Pb, while sex influenced Fe and Pb accumulation. The results suggested that the L. macrosternum species is a conceivable local bioindicator for environmental potentially toxic elements. However, other tissues will be tested to improve their sensitivity and validate their capacity to be employed as a biomonitoring tool.
