Abstract Background: The article discusses the contribution of personal assistance for the independent living of people with disabilities. This right is evolving at different speeds internationally, presents controversial aspects, and is under continuous debate.
Objective: To synthesize the evidence relating to the promotion of self-determination and independent living through personal assistance.
Methods: A systematic review was conducted following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. A search for relevant literature published was conducted during March 2023 across nine databases. The findings of the included studies were coded and analyzed via inductive content analysis.
Results: 26 articles were included, mostly qualitative, from four different continents. The analysis revealed six different key themes. The social framework highlighted the influence of international agreements and disability activism on cultural shifts in understanding disability. Secondly, healthy relationships and life or service expectations were emphasized. Key agents included users, personal assistants, family members, service providers, and other professionals. Personal assistants' work context explored ethical dilemmas, training, and working rights. Decision-making about personal assistance involved factors like lack of information, access requirements, and funding. Lastly, the implications underscored the positive impact of personal assistance on independent living, while identifying threats, and best practices for improvement.
Conclusions: This systematic review was the first to explore the promotion of independent living of people with disabilities through personal assistance schemes and highlights the need for governments to prioritize and coordinate efforts to ensure access for all, emphasizing the ethical imperative to progress toward social justice.

Abstract Serpentine areas are scarce in the world, but contain a large number of endemic taxa. These areas have, in many cases, been little or not at all surveyed from a vegetation and biodiversity conservation point of view. The most important Portuguese serpentine outcrops are found in northeastern Portugal, particularly in the Bragança-Vinhais and Morais massifs. Here, we present a complete ecological-floristic check-list of serpentinophites that are found in these areas since this knowledge is essential for their evaluation, management and conservation. A total of 25 taxa, classified into three categories with different grades of serpentinophily, were included in the list: (1) obligate serpentinophytes (exclusively on serpentine), (2) endemic or widespread taxa that in Portugal occur exclusively in ultramafic outcrops, and (3) preferential serpentinophytes (most of the distribution range, at least 90% of populations, are found on serpentine). Genera common to other Iberian serpentine areas (Andalusian serpentine flora) are Odontarrhena, Arenaria, Armeria, Asplenium, Paragymnopteris, Saxifraga and Silene. The majority of the studied serpentinophytes (72%) occurred in endemic and highly specialized plant communities. About half of the studied serpentinophytes (48%) are assigned in some IUCN threat category. Consequently, it is necessary to implement conservation measures to guarantee the protection of these habitats. Abstract The pandemic had serious implications for university education, specifically due to the transition from face-to-face teaching to online methodologies. This article analyzes the perception of students undergoing speech therapy from a Chilean University about the E-portfolio incorporation as an evaluative tool during the emergency virtual teaching due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From quantitative research, a survey of 38 questions based on Likert scales was applied to 108 penultimate year undergraduate students. The survey demonstrated that there is an improvement in the methodology and teaching support, as well as in the creativity and professionalism of the students.

Abstract Eating disorders are mental health illnesses that are influenced by various individual, family and social factors. The present study aimed to examine the influence of self-esteem and socialisation through social networks on eating disorder behaviours in adolescence. The sample was made up of 721 secondary school students (49.1% girls). The sample age ranged between 12 and 18 years (M = 13.89, SD = 1.37). Participants completed the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26) to measure disordered eating attitudes and behaviours, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the ESOC-39 scale, which measures socialisation through social networks, in addition to a brief initial sociodemographic survey. Descriptive and multivariate analyses were carried out with MANOVA. Low self-esteem was shown to increase behaviours linked to eating disorders globally. Likewise, high socialisation through social networks was also associated with a general increase in eating disorders during adolescence. The findings of the study provide empirical support for the need to develop prevention strategies that address the improvement in self-esteem and adequate socialisation through social networks during adolescence. The development of effective interventions along these lines could be helpful to treat the behaviours and attitudes that are observed in eating disorders.

Abstract Introduction: The objective of the study was to assess the effects of high-reliability system by implementing a command centre (CC) on clinical outcomes in a community hospital before and during COVID-19 pandemic from the year 2016 to 2021.
Methods: A descriptive, retrospective study was conducted at an acute care community hospital. The administrative data included monthly average admissions, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, average length of stay, total ICU length of stay, and in-hospital mortality. In-hospital acquired events were recorded and defined as one of the following: cardiac arrest, cerebral infarction, respiratory arrest, or sepsis after hospital admissions. A subgroup statistical analysis of patients with in-hospital acquired events was performed. In addition, a subgroup statistical analysis was performed for the department of medicine.
Results: The rates of in-hospital acquired events and in-hospital mortality among all admitted patients did not change significantly throughout the years 2016 to 2021. In the subgroup of patients with in-hospital acquired events, the in-hospital mortality rate also did not change during the years of the study, despite the increase in the ICU admissions during the COVID-19 pandemic.Although the in-hospital mortality rate did not increase for all admitted patients, the in-hospital mortality rate increased in the department of medicine.
Conclusion: Implementation of CC and centralized management systems has the potential to improve quality of care by supporting early identification and real-time management of patients at risk of harm and clinical deterioration, including COVID-19 patients.
