Abstract Building on insights from ecological economics and philosophy of technology, this book offers a novel, interdisciplinary approach to understand the contradictory nature of Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology. Solar photovoltaic (PV) technology is rapidly emerging as a cost-effective option in the world economy. However, reports about miserable working conditions, environmentally deleterious mineral extraction and toxic waste dumps corrode the image of a problem-free future based on solar power. Against this backdrop, Andreas Roos explores whether 'ecologically unequal exchange' - an asymmetric transfer of labour time and natural resources - is a necessary condition for solar PV development. He demonstrates how the massive increase in solar PV installation over recent years would not have been possible without significant wage/price differences in the world economy - notably between Europe/North America and Asia- and concludes that solar PV development is currently contingent on environmental injustices in the world economy. As a solution, Roos argues that solar technology is best coupled with strategies for degrowth, which allow for a transition away from fossil fuels and towards a socially just and ecologically sustainable future. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of solar power, philosophy of technology, and environmental justice.

Abstract Background: Knowledge is limited on the clinical implications of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin (hs-cTn) measurements in patients treated with oral antineoplastic agents associated with cardiovascular side effects. This study investigated the diagnostic performance of hs-cTnT for myocardial infarction.
Methods: Among all visits to 7 different emergency departments (EDs) from December 9, 2010 to August 31, 2017, we included visits by patients presenting with chest pain who had ≥1 hs-cTnT measured. Patients treated with oral antineoplastic agents associated with cardiovascular toxicity were identified. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the performance of hs-cTnT for diagnosing myocardial infarction.
Results: We identified 214,165 visits, of which 2695 (1.3%) occurred in patients with oral antineoplastic treatment associated with cardiovascular toxicity. Treatment was associated with a higher myocardial infarction incidence (8.2% vs 5.7%), but the overall diagnostic accuracy for a myocardial infarction was lower in patients with versus without treatment, paralleled by a lower specificity and PPV with the 0 h hs-cTnT rule-in cut-off of 52 ng/L (92.6% [95% CI: 91.6-93.6] vs 96.8% [95% CI: 96.8-96.9], and 42.8 [95% CI: 37.4-48.2] vs 49.5 [95% CI: 48.6-50.4], respectively). The majority (72%) of patients with treatment were assigned to an intermediate risk group, in whom the risk of myocardial infarction was reduced by 29% (OR 0.71, 95% CI: 0.57-0.89).
Conclusions: Diagnostic accuracy of hs-cTnT for myocardial infarction is reduced among patients on treatment with oral antineoplastic agents associated with cardiovascular toxicity. Most patients would be assigned to an intermediate risk group, in whom only 4% will have a final myocardial infarction diagnosis.

Abstract Global installations of solar photovoltaic (PV) technology have reached unprecedented levels and is expected to further rise in the coming decades. Conventional interpretations have neglected international trade flows and the globally uneven valuation of labor and resources as relevant for the commercialization of solar PV technology. This study challenges these interpretations by assessing whether the rapid increase in solar power was based an uneven flow of resources in the world economy. The study relies on an LCA-based account of ecologically unequal exchange in two focal PV commodities between Germany and China 2002–2018. The results show how this trade was characterized by an intensifying rate of ecologically unequal exchange, which gradually improved Germany's prospect of installing solar PV modules at the expense of increasing environmental loads in China. This environmental load displacement contributed to 15 times lower production costs per watt and considerably higher EROI (from 2.2:1 to 77:1) and power density (from 4.3 W/m² to 143 W/m²) in Germany. The study concludes that ecologically unequal exchange may have been integral to the global rise of solar power and cautions that environmental load displacements may be inherent to the success of social metabolisms reliant upon solar energy harnessed through PV technology.

Abstract Objective: Many patients who present with chest pain have previous measurements of high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT). The clinical usefulness of incorporating these measurements in identifying patients who are at a high risk of myocardial infarction (MI) is unknown. We investigated if the relative change between a historical hs-cTnT and the admission hs-cTnT could improve early identification of patients with a high risk of MI.
Methods: We included all patients presenting with chest pain to seven different emergency departments (EDs) in Sweden from December 2009 to December 2016, who had at least one hs-cTnT measurement at the presentation and at least one available prior measurement. We used logistic regression to investigate the diagnostic performance of using various combinations of current and historical hs-cTnT measurements in diagnosing MI within 30 days.
Results: A total of 27 809 visits were included, among whom 2686 (9.7%) had an MI within 30 days. A cut-off value for historical hs-cTnT-adjusted admission hs-cTnT with similar specificity (91.2%) as an admission hs-cTnT of ≥52 ng/L identified 4% more MIs (43% vs 39%) and had a higher positive predictive value, 42.6% (95% CI, 41.0% to 44.3%) vs 38.9% (95% CI 37.4% to 40.4%), as well as a higher positive likelihood ratio, 6.95 (95% CI 6.69 to 7.22) vs 5.95 (95% CI 5.73 to 6.18). Among patients with an admission hs-cTnT of <52 ng/L who were classified as high-risk patients when incorporating past hs-cTnT measurements, 28% suffered an MI.
Conclusions: Historical hs-cTnT levels can be used with admission hs-cTnT to improve early risk stratification of MI in the ED.

Abstract Background: Romantic relationship dissolutions (RRDs) are associated with posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS). Functional magnetic resonance imaging in RRD studies indicate overlapping neural activation similar to posttraumatic stress disorder. These studies combine real and hypothetical rejection, and lack contextual information and control and/or comparison groups exposed to non-RRD or DSM-5 defined traumatic events.
Aim: We investigated blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) activation in the hippocampus, amygdala, and insula of participants with RRDs compared with other traumatic or non-trauma stressors.
Methods: Emerging adults (mean age = 21.54 years; female = 74.7 %) who experienced an RRD (n = 36), DSM-5 defined trauma (physical and/or sexual assault: n = 15), or a non-RRD or DSM-5 stressor (n = 28) completed PTSS, depression, childhood trauma, lifetime trauma exposure, and attachment measures. We used a general and customised version of the International Affective Picture System to investigate responses to index-trauma-related stimuli. We used mixed linear models to assess between-group differences, and ANOVAs and Spearman's correlations to analyse factors associated with BOLD activation.
Results: BOLD activity increased between index-trauma stimuli as compared to neutral stimuli in the hippocampus and amygdala, with no significant difference between the DSM-5 Trauma and RRD groups. Childhood adversity, sexual orientation, and attachment style were associated with BOLD activation changes. Breakup characteristics (e.g., initiator status) were associated with increased BOLD activation in the hippocampus and amygdala, in the RRD group.
Conclusion: RRDs should be considered as potentially traumatic events. Breakup characteristics are risk factors for experiencing RRDs as traumatic.
Limitation: Future studies should consider more diverse representation across sex, ethnicity, and sexual orientation.
