Abstract Thalassemias are inherited blood disorders. In 2011, there was no clear situation regarding the number of thalassemia or other hemoglobinopathy patients in Romania. The luck of information has led to an increased number of patients registered by Fundeni Hospital, Bucharest in the last years. The main goal of this article is to underline the importance of implementing a screening program in Romania for thalassemia and other hemoglobinopathies, parallel with an awareness program. The importance of this objective is strongly supported by the following example: in Sardinia, thalassemia major was present in one out of 250 births, and has declined to one out of 4000 births after they implemented the screening program. The article is written by Monica Rosu, a participant to the World Wide Opportunities for Woman course, held in Canada, in 1999 and states one of the first results of thalassemia awareness in Romania with a positive impact on the patient's life, registering the following results: 2000: A website in Romanian language regarding thalassemias and addressed to patients was created. 2005: The Association of People with thalassemia major was founded and become member of Thalassemia International Federation. 2011: Thalassemia major patients from Romania have access to free treatment and the latest medical oral chelator, Exjade. The association participated in various meetings addressed to patients and doctors as well, created their own website, held workshops, fought together for an improved quality of life for themselves, for healthy people (possible thalassemia carriers) and for all Romanian children.

Abstract Strategies have been researched and implemented to reduce the number of people with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). One problem is the accurate assessment of DFU severity, which is the main factor in resource allocation and treatment choice. The primary objective of this study was to assess pentraxin-3 as a biomarker of an infected DFU (IDFU), the limb amputation level prognosis, and patient survival. The secondary objectives were to evaluate and compare other markers, including white blood cells (WBCs), C-reactive protein (CRP), the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and procalcitonin (PCT), for identifying IDFUs. Over a period of two years, 145 patients were followed; 131 of these were analyzed for this study. Pentraxin-3 was found to be a good predictor of death (

Abstract Dyslipidemia is a component of metabolic syndrome, having an important role in the carcinogenesis of different tumor types, such as prostate, ovarian, or renal cancer. The number of studies on the predictive potential of the different components of the lipid profile with a predictive potential in breast cancer is quite low. The evaluation of the lipid profile was carried out for the 142 patients who benefited from neoadjuvant therapy (NAC) in order to identify a potential predictive biomarker. The serological sample collection was performed sequentially according to a standardized protocol, pre-NAC, post-NAC and 6 months post-NAC after a 6-h pre-collection fast. We also investigated in the general group the presence or absence of the p53 mutation (TP53) and of the mitotic index ki-67, respectively, in relation to the molecular subtypes. The menopausal status, tumor size, family history, grading, Ki-67, p53 and LN metastases have a predictive nature regarding overall survival (OS) (

Abstract Congenital adrenal hyperplasia associated to 11-beta-hydroxylase deficiency is a rare cause of secondary hypertension, usually discovered during childhood; however, a late diagnosis in adults has also been reported. Despite low cortisol levels, accumulated adrenal steroid precursors can activate the glucocorticoid receptor and thus protect the patient against adrenal crisis.

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC), is the second cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide is one of the most prevalent types of cancers. Conventional treatment continues to rely on surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, but for advanced cases, adjuvant chemotherapy remains the main approach for improving surgical outcomes and lower the disease recurrence probability. Chemotherapy-induced gastrointestinal (GI) toxicity is the main dose-limiting factor for many chemotherapeutic regimens, including 5-FU, and one of the biggest oncological challenges. Up to 40% of the patients receiving 5-FU get mucositis, 10-15% of which develop severe symptoms. In this context, our study aimed to develop a bioinspired nanosized drug delivery system as a strategy to reduce 5-FU associated side effects, such as GI mucositis. To this end, SF-based nanoparticles were prepared and characterized in terms of size and morphology, as well as in terms of

Abstract Patients with immune-mediated rheumatic disease-related calcinosis comprise a subgroup at risk of encountering a more severe clinical outcome. Early assessment is pivotal for preventing overall disease progression, as calcinosis is commonly overlooked until several years into the disease and is considered as a 'non-lethal' manifestation. This single-center retrospective study explored the prevalence, clinical associations, and impact on survival of subcutaneous calcinosis in 86 patients with immune-mediated rheumatic diseases (IMRD). Calcinosis predominantly appeared in individuals with longstanding disease, particularly systemic sclerosis (SSc), constituting 74% of cases. Smaller calcinosis lesions (≤1 cm) were associated with interstitial lung disease, musculoskeletal involvement, and digital ulcerations, while larger lesions (≥4 cm) were associated with malignancy, severe peripheral artery disease, and systemic arterial hypertension. The SSc calcinosis subgroup exhibited a higher mean adjusted European Scleroderma Study Group Activity Index score than those without. However, survival rates did not significantly differ between the two groups. Diltiazem was the most commonly used treatment, and while bisphosphonates reduced complications related to calcinosis, complete resolution was not achieved. The findings underscore current limitations in diagnosing, monitoring, and treating calcinosis, emphasizing the need for further research and improved therapeutic strategies to improve patient care and outcomes.
