Abstract Religion and Politics: New Developments Worldwide features ten articles about recent developments in the interaction of Religion and Politics in various countries of Asia, Africa, Europe, and both North and South America. Most articles focus on one country, and including China, South Korea, India, Nigeria, Malaysia, France, and Cuba. Others address issues across regions such as Latin America, Southeast Asia, or the Middle East. The fifteen contributors are scholars from diverse disciplines as well as diverse regions of Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Subjects include the Indian government's favoritism for Hinduism over rival religions; the way the Sikhs of India avoid the religion-politics divide; the way the Western media fails to fully understand the Chinese government's policies on religious minorities; the aftermath of the Charlie Hebdo demonstrations in France; religious attitudes toward tax politics in South Korea as well as among Christians compared to Muslims; how to lessen the radicalization of Muslims in Southeast Asia; whether Nigeria should encourage its Muslims to be active in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation; the spiritual role played by the permaculture movement in Cuba; and how the former tendency of scholars to polarize religion and politics is no longer viable, especially in Latin America

Abstract Abstract Hydrological models have proliferated in the past several decades prompting debates on the virtues and shortcomings of various modelling approaches. Rather than critiquing individual models or modelling approaches, the objective here is to address the critical issues of scaling and hydrological process representation in various types of models with suggestions for improving these attributes in a parsimonious manner that captures and explains their functionality as simply as possible. This discussion focuses mostly on conceptual and physical/process-based models where understanding the internal catchment processes and hydrologic pathways is important. Such hydrological models can be improved by using data from advanced remote sensing (both spatial and temporal) and derivatives, applications of machine learning, flexible structures, and informing models through nested catchment studies in which internal catchment processes are elucidated. Incorporating concepts of hydrological connectivity into flexible model structures is a promising approach for improving flow path representation. Also important is consideration of the scale dependency of hydrological parameters to avoid scale mismatch between measured and modelled parameters. Examples are presented from remote high-elevation regions where water sources and pathways differ from temperate and tropical environments where more attention has been focused. The challenge of incorporating spatially and temporally variable water inputs, hydrologically pathways, climate, and land use into hydrological models requires modellers to collaborate with catchment hydrologists to include important processes at relevant scales—i.e. develop smarter hydrological models.

Abstract Abstract: The recent decisions of several medical schools to no longer participate in the rankings published annually by U.S. News & World Report have added greater visibility to the issues surrounding medical school rankings than ever before. While these announcements garnered significant attention in academic medicine and from the lay public, the authors believe these events are unlikely to eliminate rankings in medical education. In this article, the authors outline the potential harms of rankings in higher education, provide a rationale for why they will likely endure despite recent scrutiny, and offer suggestions for prospective students and the academic medical community to engage with rankings in a more productive way. Criticisms of medical school rankings have been noted for decades, including their use of subjective information and data with questionable relevance to the quality of students' education or the outcomes of their educational experience, methodological concerns, and the potential harms of ranking systems (such as schools diverting their focus and resources away from initiatives that benefit students to improve their ranking). At the same time, rankings are ubiquitous in today's culture and are powerful in human decision-making, so there is reason to believe that medical school rankings may weather the current storm. Given these concerns, the authors suggest students continue to use a variety of resources to obtain information about medical schools and consider how each school fits with their own educational needs. The authors also encourage medical schools, medical education organizations, and governing medical bodies to suggest different metrics that reflect quality in medical education and that are of importance to applicants.
