Abstract This section analyzes the influence of COVID-19 in the construction sector. Construction workers’ high vulnerability to the spread of the virus motivated this entry. The construction sector’s peculiarities and some work procedure characteristics in this sector make telecommuting impossible in most activities. In addition, most of the states and national governments declared the construction sector essential activity due to its high economic impact. The working conditions in this sector are very special: constant trips to work in groups, work group execution with little interpersonal distance, group travel, stays and accommodations away from home, meals in restaurants or work canteens, lunch in restaurants or work canteens, etc. Due to all of this, the contagion rate was very high during the pandemic months. Even today, it is still considered one of the most dangerous sectors for these purposes. With all this in mind, here we discuss why it is difficult to minimize the spread of the virus for construction workers, summarize how to assess exposure risk grades for construction job tasks, and provide possible protection requirements for the different exposure risk grades.

Abstract Recent studies on low aromatic fuels have shown that lower soot number emissions may reduce contrail ice particle number concentrations ( N _ice ). Here we implemented, in a sophisticated radiative transfer model, two ice particle size distribution schemes in order to estimate the contrail radiative forcing’s (RFs) dependence on these prospective N _ice reductions resulting from the introduction of sustainable aviation fuels. The results show that an 85% contrail N _ice reduction produces a 35% smaller contrail RF, while neglecting all non-radiative effects. This estimate of an RF reduction only considers the effects of the N _ice change assumed here, and neglects other potentially important microphysical mechanisms that may change the relationship between soot number emissions and N _ice . A comparison of our results with previous published estimates from full climate model simulations, shows similar RF reductions to those which also take into account non-radiative mechanisms, evidencing the need for more studies in order to allocate the contribution from radiative and non-radiative changes, as this would guide possible mitigation implementations. Despite these modeled contrail RF reductions being largely independent of the assumed ice water content (IWC), it is only through simultaneous improvement of the IWC and N _ice representation in models that contrail RF estimates can be better constrained. This is because our calculated RF varied by a factor of 3 when assuming a ±30% IWC range; and by a factor of 5 if a, still conservative, ±60% IWC range was prescribed, suggesting that the differences in the prescribed IWC and N _ice values in different models may explain the large discrepancies amongst published RF estimates. Recent estimates of higher N _ice values, and lower IWCs found in contrails even after several hours, compared to surrounding cirrus under similar atmospheric conditions, were assessed to conclude that it is mainly the differences in IWC that make young contrails have a smaller RF, and to reduce ...

Abstract Technology-based innovations in the bio-economy are expected to provide new market opportunities for agro-industrial growth in developing countries. This study explores how domestic entrepreneurs have been benefiting from the growing global demand for sustainable agribusiness by establishing themselves in the agricultural bio-inputs sector. Aiming to explore how developing countries can build agro-industrial capabilities that go beyond farming, a case study was conducted in Argentina giving the country’s large domestic market for agricultural inputs. The assessment was based on official data and a survey conducted with a sample of 14 Argentinean companies. Results revealed a growing number of domestic companies in the bio-inputs market, which accounted for 74% of the total number of companies by 2022. Contextual aspects that favored domestic players include private investments by local entrepreneurs, the use of locally available technologies, support from public innovation centers and assertive market strategies. Principal component analysis revealed different business models, which include companies focusing on the development of new products, companies with professional industrial plants for large-scale production and companies with a strong marketing component reaching out to farmers. The global growth of sustainable bio-based agricultural production offers areas of opportunities for domestic investments in cleaner agro-industrial sectors that go beyond the primary production of commodities and can build industrial capabilities in developing countries.

Abstract The present article, of documentary nature, studies the educational conception of the Venezuelan teacher and politician Luis Beltrán Prieto Figueroa (1902-1993): the democratic humanism. It analyzes what humanism is and the very particular significance that Prieto Figueroa gives it as a set of contents for general and intellectual formation, theoretical and academic. The political dimension of democratic humanism is also analyzed, whose meaning lies in the defense and promotion of democratic principles and productive work for the benefit of the community, neglecting and impairing the integral formation of the student.

Abstract With the aim of understanding the recent migration processes of young Spaniards settled in Chile, the present paper analyzes, on the one hand, how these young people experience their arrival and establishment in said Latin American country and, in the other hand, how the process of returning and readjusting to Spanish society takes place. For that, and following the procedures of the Grounded Theory, the discourses of 37 Spanish migrants obtained through in depth interviews were analyzed: 22 of them are living in Chile and the other 15 returned to Spain after spending a long period in Chilean society and have been living in Spain for at least one year since then. All of them have university degrees, are between 25 and 35 years old, and arrived in Chile between 2013 and 2018. This qualitative study shows the way in which these migrants experience their sociocultural integration in Chilean society, which could be typified as “nostalgic” since it is characterized by the idealization of and the longing for their society of origin. Another key characteristic is the eventual return to the country of origin, in which the desynchronization they experience is especially remarkable: after a long period abroad, they feel disconnected from the transformations that have taken place in their original environment, which leads them to experience a difficult process of readjustment to Spanish society that sometimes is even more complex than that experienced abroad.

Abstract Abstract Introduction The objective of the study was to assess the effects of high-reliability system by implementing a command centre (CC) on clinical outcomes in a community hospital before and during COVID-19 pandemic from the year 2016 to 2021. Methods A descriptive, retrospective study was conducted at an acute care community hospital. The administrative data included monthly average admissions, intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, average length of stay, total ICU length of stay, and in-hospital mortality. In-hospital acquired events were recorded and defined as one of the following: cardiac arrest, cerebral infarction, respiratory arrest, or sepsis after hospital admissions. A subgroup statistical analysis of patients with in-hospital acquired events was performed. In addition, a subgroup statistical analysis was performed for the department of medicine. Results The rates of in-hospital acquired events and in-hospital mortality among all admitted patients did not change significantly throughout the years 2016 to 2021. In the subgroup of patients with in-hospital acquired events, the in-hospital mortality rate also did not change during the years of the study, despite the increase in the ICU admissions during the COVID-19 pandemic.Although the in-hospital mortality rate did not increase for all admitted patients, the in-hospital mortality rate increased in the department of medicine. Conclusion Implementation of CC and centralized management systems has the potential to improve quality of care by supporting early identification and real-time management of patients at risk of harm and clinical deterioration, including COVID-19 patients.

Abstract Plant varieties are named and released based on distinct, unique and stable characteristics but may be maintained separately by genebanks or stock centers under separate accession identification numbers. Genetic heterogeneity of the original variety, genetic drift, failure to exclude cross pollination, and propagation error may erode the integrity of genetic resources. The availability of resequencing and genotyping data for duplicate samples enables an analysis to clarify the relationship between specific varieties or independently curated accessions of the same variety while also assessing the fidelity of germplasm maintenance. We accessed both Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) array genotypes and resequencing data for two important tomato varieties ‘UC 82’and ‘M82’ that have been maintained as separate accessions in collections as important resources for the research and breeding communities. Our analysis of these data suggests that polymorphism rates from resequencing of cultivated tomato are overestimated in the literature due to heterozygous calls caused by either sequence error or coalignment of repetitive sequences. We defined a set of 32,352 robust SNPs from a file containing data for all samples and we compared the distribution of data with SNPs called from a genotyping array. For both analyses, intravariety variation was found in haplotype blocks, with the same haplotypes identified using SNPs detected from array and sequence data. The distribution pattern of variation across the entire genome sequence was similar for both ‘UC 82’and ‘M82’. Overall, the differences between distinct accessions of a variety were nearly as great as the differences between ‘UC 82’and ‘M82’. The similarities between ‘UC82’ and ‘M82’ range from 99.33% to 99.74% and are highly consistent with a common pedigree and shared selection from partially inbred progeny. The data also suggest that these tomato genetic resources have been propagated with high fidelity.
