Abstract Background: Health care workers (HCW) are presumably exposed to a higher risk of infection by SARS-CoV-2 and could possibly represent a source of transmission to susceptible patients. Thus, characterization of SARS-CoV-2 infection among HCW is necessary to better understand the determinants of viral transmission and properly implement strategies to prevent dissemination and protect HCW and vulnerable patients. The aim of this study was to estimate the seroprevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in a Portuguese tertiary hospital, in the period of July 2020 to March 2021, before the generalized use of the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine, characterize its evolution over time, and identify risk factors associated with seroconversion.
Methods: HCW were approached to collect serum samples for qualitative SARS-CoV-2 antibody testing and completion of an online survey capturing demographics, previous symptoms, and details of health care and community exposure. Odds ratio with bivariable and multivariable logistic regression was used to assess characteristics associated with seroprevalence.
Results: One thousand HCW were included for analysis. Two hundred nineteen HCW (22%) were seropositive for immunoglobulin G against SARS-CoV-2, and 166 (17%) were seropositive for immunoglobulin M, most of whom reported a previous diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The risk factors associated with seroconversion included a previous COVID-19 diagnosis, contact with patients, occupational contact with colleagues, and outside contact. However, in a multivariate logistic regression analysis, only a previous diagnosis and outside contact were associated with seroconversion. Seropositivity decreased over time, especially 28 weeks after infection.
Conclusion: HCWs have a high seroprevalence for SARS-CoV-2 infection, probably due to a combination of health care and community exposure. Seropositivity decreases over time, but further studies are needed to better understand our adaptive immune response.

Abstract Necrotising fasciitis (NF) is a severe infection of the subcutaneous tissue and fascia that can rapidly lead to sepsis and shock with high mortality rates. Its initial signs are often non-specific making it difficult for an early diagnosis to be reached. Nevertheless it is of the utmost importance to begin proper treatment including wide surgical debridement as soon as possible in order to avoid death. We present the case of a patient with NF of the thoracic wall which is a rare location for this disease but often associated with worse prognosis. Even though he progressed to septic shock within less than 24 hours of its presentation, due to early surgical management, aggressive resuscitation and intensive care support, he reached a favourable outcome. After three surgical revisions and 2 weeks in an intensive care unit, the patient was discharged from hospital 35 days after admission.

Abstract Introduction: COPD often leads to loss of independence in daily activities which may increase the dependency on the informal caregiver, resulting in caregiving burden. Several instruments have been used to assess caregiving burden in COPD; however, their measurement properties have been poorly investigated in this population. This study assessed the construct validity and reliability of the Informal Caregiver Burden Assessment Questionnaire (QASCI) in informal caregivers of patients with COPD.
Methods: Participants completed the QASCI (higher scores indicate higher burden) and the following questionnaires to assess construct validity: Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) and World Health Organization Quality of Life Instrument - Short Form (WHOQOL-Bref). QASCI was completed again one week later to assess test-retest reliability. Statistical analyses included: Pearson's (r) or Spearman's (ρ) correlations (construct validity); Cronbach's α (internal consistency); Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC
Results: Fifty caregivers (62.7 ± 9.8 years, 88% female; patients' FEV
Conclusions: The QASCI seems to be a promising measure to assess burden levels associated with informal caregiving in COPD.

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most prevalent type of cancer, and liver metastasis is the most common site of metastatic development. In the tumor microenvironment (TME), various innate immune cells are known to influence cancer progression and metastasis occurrence. CD274 (PD-L1) and CD206 (MRC1) are proteins that have been associated with poor prognosis and disease progression. We conducted a study on tumoral and non-tumoral biopsies from 47 patients with CRC liver metastasis, using flow cytometry to phenotypically characterize innate immune cells. Our findings showed an increase in the expression of CD274 on classical, intermediate, and non-classical monocytes when comparing tumor with non-tumor samples. Furthermore, tumor samples with a desmoplastic growth pattern exhibited a significantly decreased percentage of CD274- and CD206-positive cells in all monocyte populations compared to non-desmoplastic samples. We found a correlation between a lower expression of CD206 or CD274 on classical, intermediate, and non-classical monocytes and increased disease-free survival, which points to a better prognosis for these patients. In conclusion, our study has identified potential new targets and biomarkers that could be incorporated into a personalized medicine approach to enhance the outcome for colorectal cancer patients.

Abstract The design, synthesis and photoluminescence characterization of sulfide cluster-based zeolitic materials with the general formula Na8[SiAlO4]6SxCl2–2x is presented in this report. The employed experimental conditions, which included the thermal treatment of sodium Linde type A (Na-LTA) zeolites in the presence of Na2SO4 and NaCl, yielded highly photoluminescent sulfur-zeolites with remarkably large Stokes shifts. An emission band at 650 nm for samples with low sulfur contents is observed when excited at 380 nm, which is fully consistent with S2– clusters as light-emitting centers. These orange emitting materials display external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) reaching 53% with peculiar high temperature photoluminescence stability up to 450 °C. For higher S/Cl molar ratios, a gradual conversion to near-infrared (NIR) light-emitting centers is observed with a maximum at 780 nm. This novel NIR luminescent species with EQEs of about 10% are attributed to polysulfide clusters (tentatively S42– species). Given the high EQE values, large Stokes shifts, and thermal stability, the materials presented in this report can find applications in light down-conversion systems or as phosphors in lighting devices.

Abstract Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common cancers worldwide, with liver metastasis being its main cause of death. This study harvested fresh biological material from non-tumor and tumor tissue from 47 patients with CRC liver metastasis after surgery, followed by mechanical cellular extraction and stain-lyse-wash direct immunofluorescence technique. Here, 60 different T-cell populations were characterized by flow cytometry. Tumor samples were also subdivided according to their growth pattern into desmoplastic and non-desmoplastic. When we compared tumor versus non-tumor samples, we observed a significantly lower percentage of T-lymphocyte infiltration in the tumor in which the CD4

Abstract Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can lead to increased dependence on the informal caregiver and, consequently, to distress associated with caregiving burden. In the general population, higher levels of physical activity (PA) are related to lower distress levels; however, this relationship has been scarcely studied in COPD. This study aimed to explore the relationship between distress and PA in informal caregivers of patients with COPD, and the influence of caregivers' (age, sex) and patients' (age, sex, lung function) characteristics and caregiving duration on this relationship.A cross-sectional study was conducted with 50 caregivers (62.7 ± 9.8 years, 88% female; 78% caring for a spouse/partner; 38% caring >40 h/week; patients' FEV

Abstract In this study, stable and nonexpensive aluminoborosilicate glasses with different photoluminescence colors were synthesized by doping with Pb(II), Ba(II) and sodium halides. While glasses with NaF and NaCl exhibit no (or very low) luminescence, glasses doped with NaBr and NaI display room-temperature photoluminescence at 435 and 530 nm, respectively. The observed room-temperature photoluminescence is attributed to nanocrystals whose presence is revealed by transmission electron microscopy. The crystalline nature of the particles, which are pointed out as barium-lead halides, is also revealed by anisotropy measurements for Br and I doped samples. Time-resolved luminescence measurements show a second-order kinetics component combined with a first-order nonradiative rate constant. The photoluminescence properties here described are important for the future design of new optical materials or devices based on lead halide nanocrystals.

Title translation Primary tuberculosis of the breast: a case report.
Abstract Tuberculosis of the breast is an uncommon disease. The authors present a case of an asymptomatic 64 year-old patient whose mammography showed a right breast nodule which needed aetiological investigation. Complementary diagnostic exams did not lead to a differential diagnosis between granulomatous lesion and breast carcinoma; nodule aspiration results suggested tuberculosis of the breast but were unclear and so tuberculosis antibiotics were initiated. No other tuberculosis infectious focus was found at clinical- laboratory evaluation. Imagiology progress was favourable, so patient continued treatment. The authors highlight the low rate of primary tuberculosis of the breast and make a brief reference to the pathology, which has a low rate of microbiological and pathological- anatomical identification.
