Abstract Sand, clay and rock have to be excavated for a variety of purposes, such as dredging, trenching, mining (including deep sea mining), drilling, tunnel boring and many other applications. Many excavations take place on dry land, but they are also frequently required in completely saturated conditions, and the methods necessary to accomplish them consequently vary widely. This book provides an overview of cutting theories. It begins with a generic model, valid for all types of soil (sand, clay and rock), and continues with the specifics of dry sand, water-saturated sand, clay, atmospheric rock and hyperbaric rock. Small blade angles and large blade angles are discussed for each soil type, and for each case considered the equations/model for cutting forces, power and specific energy are given. With models verified by laboratory research, principally from the Delft University of Technology, and data from other recognized sources, this book will prove an invaluable reference for anybody whose work involves major excavations of any kind

ARE THESE BARRIERS OR OPPORTUNITIES FOR SMALL-SCALE SUBSISTENCE CROP PRODUCTION IN THE ERA OF CLIMATE CHANGE?

Abstract The livelihoods of smallholder farmers in semi-arid regions are being threatened by climate change and variability. The combination of rising temperatures and less rainfall poses a significant challenge to crop productivity and food security for these farmers. Consequently, the implementation of agricultural extension services is regarded as a more effective approach to bolstering small-scale agricultural productivity. This review describes the contributions made by agricultural extension officers in assisting small-scale farmers, as well as an examination of the obstacles and potential avenues for enhancing subsistence crop production in the context of climate change in Limpopo Province, South Africa. A comprehensive selection of literature was examined, and a deductive coding methodology was employed to analyse the literature. The results of the study reveal that agricultural extension support given to small-scale farmers, specifically climate information and training on alternate ways of crop production, is an opportunity crucial for adapting to and managing the challenges posed by fluctuating temperatures and rainfall patterns. These services offer the potential for enhanced food production. The farmers use both extension services and their indigenous adaptation practices simultaneously. This review proposes a novel strategy for mitigating the adverse effects of climate change on subsistence crop production; the integration of conventional and contemporary production technology and expertise offered by agricultural extension officers to formulate a pertinent and well-received policy for climate change adaptation, with the aim of ensuring food availability and accessibility.

Abstract Climate change is responsible for the depletion of local food resources procured mostly by women to fulfill household food requirements. Food insecurity because of erratic rainfall and rising temperatures negatively affected household food security practices. Nonetheless, women employ their traditional and alternative methods of adaptation to guarantee the accessibility and availability of food resources. This study elucidates the endeavors undertaken by women residing in the rural areas of Limpopo Province, South Africa to guarantee household food security. The research employed semi-structured interviews as a methodological approach to elucidate the dynamics of shifting climatic patterns that exert adverse effects on subsistence food production. Additionally, the study aimed to investigate the strategies employed by women to mitigate food insecurity in the face of these challenges. The study findings indicate that climate change is primarily characterized by unpredictable rainfall patterns and increasing temperatures, which are identified as the main factors contributing to reduced agricultural productivity in subsistence crops. Women have a crucial role in ensuring household food security by engaging in home gardening and participating in stockvels as providers of food within the households. The farming practices adopted by the women could be encouraged and supported by the local agricultural extension officers for a wider practice. The stockvels represent innovative technologies adopted by the women to ensure food insecurity. The integration of gender considerations into climate change adaptation plans has the potential to facilitate the implementation of efficient and economical capacity-building initiatives and adaptive solutions.
