Abstract This study investigated the fauna of ectoparasitic crustaceans in Leporinus affinis from Reservoir Coaracy Nunes, in eastern Amazon (Brazil), as well as the parasite-host interactions. The mouth, gills and tegument of 50.9% of the fish examined were parasitized by Argulus chicomendesi, Ergasilus turucuyus and Excorallana berbicensis, and a total of 118 parasites were collected. The dominance was found for E. berbicensis and the higher infestation levels were caused by E. berbicensis on the body surface of the hosts, but E. turucuyus had the highest prevalence on the gills of this host. The cluster analysis revealed higher similarity in the infestations by E. berbicensis and A. chicomendesi in relation to infestation site in hosts. Host sex and relative condition factor (Kn) were not influenced by moderate parasitism, but the abundance of parasites presented negative correlation with weight and Kn of the fish. This is the first study on the parasites of L. affinis showing low species diversity, with moderate prevalence and low parasite abundance.

DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18561/2179-5746/biotaamazonia.v5n3p98-107

Abstract The objective of this work was to analyze the diet of Ageneiosus ucayalensis from the reservoir of the Coaracy Nunes Hydroelectric Power Plant, in the municipality of Ferreira Gomes/AP. Sampling was carried out bimonthly at three collection stations in the reservoir area between July/2009 and July/2010. The collections were carried out using gill nets, organized in batteries with seven nets each and different distances between nodes. After capture, the biometrics of the specimens were performed, and their stomachs were removed, fixed and preserved for analysis in the laboratory. The sex ratio was performed in order to verify if there was a significant difference between the sexes. The food items of stomach contents were grouped into broad categories and analyzed using frequency of occurrence and volumetric methods, combined in the Food Importance Index (AIi), by seasonal period. The results showed that the sex ratio was 1:1, with a slight predominance of females. As for food, the species was carnivorous, with a diet based mainly on microcrustaceans, crustaceans, fish and unidentifiable material. Seasonal variations in the diet were not clear and are probably related both to the availability of prey in the area and to the manipulation of the reservoir water level by controlling the floodgates. Abstract The present work was carried out during 2009 and aimed to notify and record the main characteristics of stingray accidents in four communities of the APA of Rio Curiaú. For this study, 22 victims of stingray accidents were investigated, obtaining information about the accidents, which were tabulated and statistically analyzed. The highest frequency of victims was in the locality of Torrão do Curiaú, with a record of 63.67% of the cases. The victims were aged over 15 years and most were male. According to the victims, none of them knows the identification of the species of rays that occur in the study area. The highest incidence of accidents affected the lower limbs (86%). Most accidents occurred in the afternoon and in the summer season. The most used therapy by the victimized population was the popular one with the use of urine, herbs and oils and specific herbal medicine Pessoa. The results reinforce the need for public authorities to pay attention to the underreporting of stingray accidents and to propose measures that encourage studies of adequate therapy and relevant qualification of health professionals. Abstract In fish, as in mammals, parts of the nervous system are involved in mechanisms for regulating body systems in tune with the environment. The photoperiod is translated into physiological information from the secretion of melatonin. There seems to be no morphophysiological barriers for this indolamine, that is, melatonin rapidly perfuses into each cell of the organism and in some cases interacts with receptors and membrane located on the cell surface. , and appears to be linked to food intake, growth, and locomotor activity in fish. They are important molecules metabolizing reactive oxygen species to inactive products and, therefore, reducing oxidative damage. This work aims to briefly survey recent articles on luminosity, melatonin and oxidative stress in fish, and correlate them with fish farming. We conclude that luminosity seems to be linked to the production of melatonin, and this antioxidant molecule, which favors the reduction of oxidative stress, seems to improve performance in the production of fish in farms. Abstract The animals have anatomical and physiological structures influenced by luminosity. In fish, the pineal gland cells contain photoreceptors and the suprachiasmatic nucleus seems to be involved in biological rhythm just like in other vertebrates. This work aims to describe the role of luminosity and day periods in Danio rerio's Light/Dark preference. For this purpose 160 naive adult undetermined sex Zebrafish were divided into 5 groups of 32 subjects and kept in isolated aquaria with light control. Afterwards, each fish was tested in the Light/Dark aquaria, with water column of 5 centimeters. There was an habituation period of 5 minutes (300 seconds) followed by removal of the sliding doors, allowing the subjects to explore the apparatus for 15 minutes (900 seconds). Tests were performed in different day periods, as follows: Morning (06:00 – 12:00 h); Afternoon (12:00 – 18:00 h); Night (18:00 – 24:00 h); Late Night (24:00 – 06:00 h). Our results show that the time of permanence is sensitive to day period. The number of crossings and latency were not influenced by the period of the day. Further studies regarding biological basis of Light/Dark Preference should be carried out in order to understand the role of circadian function in Danio rerio's behavior. Keywords: Danio rerio, zebrafish, behavior, light-dark preference, anxiety. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18561/2179-5746/biotaamazonia.v4n3p106-111

Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large‐scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay. We compiled 185,787 distribution records, with unique georeferenced coordinates, for the 4225 species, represented by occurrence and abundance data. The number of species for the most numerous orders are as follows: Characiformes (1289), Siluriformes (1384), Cichliformes (354), Cyprinodontiformes (245), and Gymnotiformes (135). The most recorded species was the characid Astyanax fasciatus (4696 records). We registered 116,802 distribution records for native species, compared to 1802 distribution records for nonnative species. The main aim of the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set was to make these occurrence and abundance data accessible for international researchers to develop ecological and macroecological studies, from local to regional scales, with focal fish species, families, or orders. We anticipate that the NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set will be valuable for studies on a wide range of ecological processes, such as trophic cascades, fishery pressure, the effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, and the impacts of species invasion and climate change. There are no copyright restrictions on the data, and please cite this data paper when using the data in publications.

Abstract The Neotropical region hosts 4225 freshwater fish species, ranking first among the world's most diverse regions for freshwater fishes. Our NEOTROPICAL FRESHWATER FISHES data set is the first to produce a large-scale Neotropical freshwater fish inventory, covering the entire Neotropical region from Mexico and the Caribbean in the north to the southern limits in Argentina, Paraguay, Chile, and Uruguay.
