Abstract Facilitative interactions bind community species in intricate ecological networks, preserving species that would otherwise be lost. The traditional understanding of ecological networks as static components of biological communities overlooks the fact that species interactions in a network can fluctuate. Analyzing the patterns that cause those shifts can reveal the principles that govern the identity of pairwise interactions and whether they are predictable based on the traits of the interacting species and the local environmental contexts in which they occur. Here we explore how abiotic stress and phylogenetic and functional affinities constrain those shifts. Specifically, we hypothesize that rewiring the facilitative interactions is more limited in stressful than in mild environments. We present evidence of a distinct pattern in the rewiring of facilitation-driven communities at different stress levels. In highly stressful environments with a firm reliance on facilitation, rewiring is limited to growing beneath nurse species with traits to overcome harsh stressful conditions. However, when environments are milder, rewiring is more flexible, although it is still constrained to nurses that are close relatives. Understanding the ability of species to rewire their interactions is crucial for predicting how communities may respond to the unprecedented rate of perturbations on Earth.

Abstract Recent progress in large-scale sequencing, genomics, and rapid gene isolation techniques has accelerated the identification of race-specific resistance (R) genes and their corresponding avirulence (Avr) genes in wheat, barley, rye, and their wild relatives. Here, we describe the growing repertoire of identified R and Avr genes with special emphasis on novel R gene architectures, revealing that there is a large diversity of proteins encoded by race-specific resistance genes that extends beyond the canonical nucleotide-binding domain leucine-rich repeat proteins. Immune receptors with unique domain architectures controlling race-specific resistance possibly reveal novel aspects on the biology of host-pathogen interactions. We conclude that the polyploid cereal genomes have a large evolutionary potential to generate diverse types of resistance genes.

Abstract In the present work, liposomes have been used as nanocarriers in the biofortification of wheat plants with selenium (Se) through foliar application. Liposomal formulations were prepared using 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) and Phospholipon®90H (P90H) (average size <100 nm), loaded with different concentrations of inorganic Se (selenite and selenate) and applied twice to the plants in the stage of vegetative growth. Liposomes enhanced Se uptake by wheat plants compared to direct application. The highest Se enrichment was achieved using the phospholipid DPPC and a concentration of 1000 μmol·L

Abstract Olivetol (OLV), as a cannabidiol (CBD) analog, was incorporated in γ-cyclodextrin metal-organic frameworks (γ-CD-MOFs) and 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DPPC) liposomes as potential analgesic drug delivery systems (DDS) for dental hypersensitivity (DH) treatment. These DDS have been scarcely employed in oral health, being the first time in case of MOFs loaded with cannabinoids. In vitro experiments using bovine teeth were performed to verify if the drug is able to reach the dentin, where it can flow to the pulp tissues and exert its analgesic effect; enamel and dentin regions were analyzed by synchrotron radiation-based FTIR microspectroscopy. Principal component analysis (PCA) was used to process the spectroscopic data as a powerful chemometric tool, and it revealed a similar behavior in both regions. The studied DDS have been characterized by different techniques, and is was demonstrated that DDS is an efficient way to carry the drug through dental tissues without compromising their structure.
