Abstract Despite the recent advancements in memory devices, the quest for building materials with low power consumption is still on, with the ultimate focus on the durability of the system and reliability and reproducibility of its performance. Halide perovskites (HPs), which have several intriguing photoelectrical traits, have recently been utilized for memory applications; one of the highlights of these materials is the ionic-motion-based fast switching in their crystal structure. In this work, a CsPb

Abstract We report observation of electric-field-driven resistive transition at a characteristic threshold field $E_{th}(T)$ across a temperature range 10-200 K in an off-stoichiometric composite of (~80 vol%) W- and (~20 vol%) Z-type hexaferrites. The dielectric constant $\epsilon$ and the relaxation time constant $\tau$ too exhibit anomalous jump at $E_{th}(T)$. The $E_{th}(T)$, the extent of jump in resistivity ($\Delta\rho$), and the hysteresis associated with the jump [$\Delta E_{th}(T)$] are found to decrease systematically with the increase in temperature ($T$). Several temperature-driven phase transitions have also been noticed in low and high resistive states (LRS and HRS). The temperature-driven conduction turns out to be governed by activated hopping of small polarons at all the phases with electric ($E$) and magnetic ($H$) field dependent activation energy $U(E,H)$. Interestingly, as the temperature is raised, the $E$-driven conduction at a fixed temperature evolves from $\textit{Ohmic}$ to $\textit{non-Ohmic}$ across 10-200 K and within 110-200 K, $\rho$ follows three-dimensional variable range hopping (3D-VRH) with stretched exponential $\sim$ $exp[(E_0/E)^4]$ or power law $\sim$ $(E_0/E)^m$ ($m$ varies within $\sim$0.6-0.7 and $\sim$0.6-0.8 at LRS and HRS, respectively) dependence depending on the localization length ($\zeta_E$) to diffusion length ($d_E$) ratio associated with $E$-driven conduction. The $\rho(E,T)$ follows universal scaling only at LRS within 10-110 K but not at higher temperature or at HRS. The entire set of observations has been discussed within the framework of structural evolution of the point-defect (cation vacancies or oxygen excess) network. This comprehensive map of esoteric $\rho-E-T-H$ and $\epsilon-E-T-H$ patterns provides insights on defect driven effects in a composite useful for tuning both the resistive transition and multiferroicity.

Abstract We report observation of surface-defect-induced room temperature multiferroicity - surface ferromagnetism ($M_S$ at 50 kOe $\sim$0.005 emu/g), ferroelectricity ($P_R$ $\sim$2 nC/cm$^2$), and significantly large magnetoelectric coupling (decrease in $P_R$ by $\sim$80\% under $\sim$15 kOe field) - in nanorods (diameter $\sim$100 nm) of double perovskite Y$_2$NiMnO$_6$ compound. In bulk form, this system exhibits multiferroicity only below its magnetic transition temperature $T_N$ $\approx$ 70 K. On the other hand, the oxygen vacancies, formed at the surface region (thickness $\sim$10 nm) of the nanorods, yield long-range magnetic order as well as ferroelectricity via Dzyloshinskii-Moriya exchange coupling interactions with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Sharp drop in $P_R$ under magnetic field indicates strong cross-coupling between magnetism and ferroelectricity as well. Observation of room temperature magnetoelectric coupling in nanoscale for a compound which, in bulk form, exhibits multiferroicity only below 70 K underscores an alternative pathway for inducing magnetoelectric multiferroicity via surface defects and, thus, in line with magnetoelectric property observed, for example, in domain walls or boundaries or interfaces of heteroepitaxially grown thin films which do not exhibit such features in their bulk.

Abstract We investigate the physicochemical interactions of gold nanorod (GNR) with single-stranded, double-stranded, and hairpin DNA structures to improve the biological compatibility as well as the therapeutic potential, including the photothermal effect of the conjugates. Studies have demonstrated that different DNA secondary structures, containing thiol group, have different patterns of physicochemical interaction. Conjugation efficiency of paired oligonucleotides are significantly higher than that of oligonucleotides with naked bases. Furthermore, hairpin-shaped DNA structures are most efficient in terms of conjugation and increased dispersion, with least interference on GNR near-infrared absorbance and photothermal effect. Our conjugation method can successfully exchange the overall coating of the GNR, attaching the maximum number of DNA molecules, thus far reported. Chemical mapping depicted uniform attachment of thiolated DNA molecules without any topological preference on the GNR surface. Hairpin DNA-coated GNR are suitable for intracellular uptake and remain dispersed in the cellular environment. Finally, we conjugated GNR with 5-fluoro-2'-deoxyuridine-containing DNA hairpin and the conjugate demonstrated significant cytotoxic activity against human cervical cancer cell line (KB). Thus, hairpin DNA structures could be utilized for optimal dispersion and photothermal effect of GNR, along with the delivery of cytotoxic nucleotides, developing the concept of multimodality approach.
