Abstract The instabilities that arise in a rotating plane layer due to imposed vertical temperature form the basis of fluid flow structures in outer Earth's core. The temperature profile in the Earth's outer core, being affected by various conditions such as secular cooling, bottom heating at the inner core surface, is believed to be modulated by thermal conditions near the core-mantle boundary. The present study investigated the role of such modulations by imposing a layer of stably stratified fluid near the top boundary and imposing a sinusoidal temperature variations over and above the reference case of isothermal condition used in the classical Rayleigh–Benard convection. Such conditions result in the top–bottom flow asymmetry that cause flow localization and changed temporal dynamics compared to the classical Rayleigh–Benard cells. The minimum buoyancy forcing required for convection is also lowered with flows in surplus heat flux regions. The flow suppression in the stable layer is overcome by the effects of rapid rotation enhancing the penetration of convection columns with smaller length scales. The heterogeneous temperature conditions imposed at the top boundary also cause axially penetrative convection instabilities unlike the reference case. The onset of oscillatory convection modes is dominant in low Prandtl number cases, which is relevant to the Earth's core conditions. The dominance of Coriolis force for rapid rotation cases causes a traveling wave instability, the propagation direction of which is determined by the heat flux occurring at the top boundary.

Abstract Stable stratified layer near CMB plays a significant role both on the flow pattern in the outer core, as well as the morphology of the geomagnetic field. Using a radially varying heat source various temperature profiles have been generated. These profiles are characterised based on the presence of a stable stratified layer, of varying thickness, near the outer boundary. The dynamics of the Earth’s outer core convection is the central focus of this study. Heat flux variation at the outer boundary, with three different amplitudes of spherical harmonic pattern, is imposed to mimic core-mantle thermal interactions. The flow structures are analysed based on the vorticity dynamics and the role of helical flow structures, responsible for dynamo action and generating magnetic fields. It is observed that although the anticyclonic helicity is dominant over the cyclonic helicity, positive heat flux promotes the cyclonic helicity whereas the negative heat flux promotes the anticyclonic helicity in strongly driven convection. In rapidly rotating regime, thicker stratified layer tries to damp the magnetic field across the layer resulting in a large scale field at the CMB. Finally, it is also seen that high heat flux boundary forcing causes the dynamo action to fail.

Abstract Boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes are promising photosensitizers for cellular imaging and photodynamic therapy (PDT) owing to their excellent photophysical properties and the synthetically tunable core. Metalation provides a convenient way to overcome the drawbacks arising from their low aqueous solubility. New photo-/redox-responsive Co(III) prodrug chaperones are developed as anticancer PDT agents for efficient cellular delivery of red-light-active BODIPY dyes. The photobiological activity of heteroleptic Co(III) complexes derived from tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPA) and acetylacetone-conjugated PEGylated distyryl BODIPY (

Abstract We report morphological evolution and pattern formation during evaporative drying of a droplet of polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) dissolved in tetrahydrofuran over a soft, swellable cross-linked Sylgard 184 substrate. In contrast to the well-known coffee ring formation due to the evaporation of a polymer solution droplet over a rigid substrate, we show that the situation becomes far more complicated over a Sylgard 184 substrate due to solvent penetration and associated swelling. The combined effect of evaporation and diffusive penetration leads to significantly faster solvent loss and results in the formation of an in situ thin polymer shell over the free surface of the evaporating droplet due to the attainment of local glass-transition concentration. The diffusive penetration of the solvent also leads to the spreading of the three-phase contact line (TPCL) of the droplet after dispensing. The vertical component of surface tension acting at the TPCL results in the formation of peripheral creases along the boundary of the droplet after the TPCL pins. With the progressive solvent loss, the shell eventually collapses, resulting in a buckled morphology with a central depression. We show that the evolution pathway and the final deposit morphology depend strongly on the initial PMMA concentration (

Abstract To derive optimal thyroid cartilage window for medialisation thyroplasty in Indian population and comparision of the same with standard parameters including Isshiki's thyroplasty type I. Along with comparision it is also attempted to bring out difference if any, to provide a better guidelines of medialisation thyroplasty in Indian population. A total No of 52 (35 male and 17 female) cadaveric laryngeal samples (formalin fixed) taken into study. Cartilage window over thyroid lamina is created and increased gradually. Endoscopic examination of medialisation by appropriate silastic block of true vocal cord noted at each level. Relevant thyroid anatomy at window corners also taken into consideration. In Indian set up, dimensions of window required for medialisation thyroplasty are slightly lesser than the average size quoted by premier study of Isshiki when compared in male population. The window size of males which produced ideal medialisation was 12-14 mm in length and 5 mm in height. In females it was 10-11 mm in length and 4 mm in height.
