Abstract " Dear Editor, Over the centuries, innovations occurring outside the context of medical science (e.g., new technology and techniques) have had a great effect on human health. For example, technological improvements in water and sanitation helped eliminate dysentery as much, if not more than, medical interventions. A similar trend remains today, as technological advancements in computer science, genetics, nanotechnology, robotics, and other applied sciences are expected to lead to profound changes in the nature and delivery of health care. While some critics claim innovation in medical and other technology has promised more than what it has delivered thus far, fast-growing markets for telehealth, radiology/imaging, robotics, and personalized medicine indicate the potential for substantial changes in the near future, as described below."

Abstract Duodenoscope-related infections are a major concern in medicine and GI endoscopy, especially in fragile patients. Disposable duodenoscopes seem to be the right tool to minimize the problem: a good choice for patients with many comorbidities or with a high risk of carrying multidrug resistant bacteria. Urgent endoscopy could also be a good setting for the use of single-use duodenoscopes, especially when the risk of the infection cannot be evaluated. Their safety and efficacy in performing ERCP has been proven in many studies. However, randomized clinical trials and comparative large studies with reusable scopes are lacking. Moreover, the present early stage of their introduction on the market does not allow a large economical evaluation for each health system. Thus, accurate economical and safety comparisons with cap-disposable duodenoscopes are needed. Moreover, the environmental impact of single-use duodenoscopes should be carefully evaluated, considering the ongoing climate change. In conclusion, definitive guidelines are needed to choose wisely the appropriate patients for ERCP with disposable duodenoscopes as the complete switch to single-use duodenoscopes seems to be difficult, to date. Many issues are still open, and they need to be carefully evaluated in further, larger studies.

Abstract In recent years, endoscopic placement of intraluminal stents is increasingly used to manage a widening range of colorectal disorders. Self-expanding metal stents represent an established alternative to surgery for the palliation of unresectable carcinomas and currently allow a "bridge-to-surgery" strategy to relieve large bowel obstruction and optimise the patients' clinical conditions before elective oncologic resection. Additionally, intraluminal stents represent an appealing option to manage obstructing extracolonic tumours and selected patients with benign conditions such as refractory anastomotic strictures and post-surgical leaks. This educational paper reviews the technical features and current indications of colorectal stenting and presents the expected and abnormal radiographic, CT and MRI appearances observed during the endoscopic management of malignant, benign and iatrogenic colonic disorders with stents. The aim is to provide radiologists with a thorough familiarity with stent-related issues, which is crucial for appropriate reconstruction of focused CT images, correct interpretation of early post-procedural studies and elucidation of stent-related complications such as misplacement, haemorrhage, perforation, migration and re-obstruction.

Abstract Elastography is a non-invasive method widely used to measure the stiffness of the tissues, and it is available in most endoscopic ultrasound machines, using either qualitative or quantitative techniques. Endoscopic ultrasound elastography is a tool that should be applied to obtain a complementary evaluation of pancreatic diseases, together with other imaging tests and clinical data. Elastography can be informative, especially when studying pancreatic masses and help the clinician in the differential diagnosis between benign or malignant lesions. However, further studies are necessary to standardize the method, increase the reproducibility and establish definitive cut-offs to distinguish between benign and malignant pancreatic masses. Moreover, even if promising, elastography still provides little information in the evaluation of benign conditions.

Abstract We present an experimental study on the etching of detonation nanodiamond (DND) seeds during typical microwave chemical vapor deposition (MWCVD) conditions leading to ultra-thin diamond film formation, which is fundamental for many technological applications. The temporal evolution of the surface density of seeds on Si(100) substrate has been assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The resulting kinetics have been explained in the framework of a model based on the effect of particle size, according to the Young-Laplace equation, on both chemical potential of carbon atoms in DND and activation energy of reaction. We found that seeds with size smaller than a critical radius, r*, are etched away while those greater than r* can grow. Finally, the model allows to estimate the rate coefficients for growth and etching from the experimental kinetics.
