Abstract The current study aimed to detect the antimicrobial effect of cell free supernatant (CFS) of Lactobacillus plantarum strain against Gram +ve and Gram –ve bacterial strains. The strain of Lactobacillus plantarum was isolated using selective media MRS agar. The strain was characterized on the basis of the gram staining, colony morphology, the biochemical tests and the DNA sequencing based method of 16S ribotyping. A total of four test strains (The three already isolated and reported strains (E.coli, S. aureus and B. subtilis) and the one recently identified novel strain (B. cereus) were used for the analysis of antagonistic activity of bacteriocin produced by L. plantarum strain. The CFS of L. plantarum showed zone of inhibition against all the test strains (Gram +ve and Gram –ve bacteria). The conditions favoring the growth of bacteria were associated with the antimicrobial efficacy of CFS. Bacteriocin activity of CFS remained effective after exposure to temperature stress. Wide range of antagonistic potential of CFS of L. plantarum provides an alternative for antibiotics in pharmaceutical industry. Heat resistant feature of bacteriocin suggests its application in food industry.

A Comparative Study of Asset Pricing Models from India

Abstract: This study compares the three-factor model (F&F model) proposed by Eugene Fama and Kenneth French with Daniel and Titman’s Characteristics Model (D&T model) using the data of Indian stock returns for the period of 25 years from 1993 to 2018. Three-way ... ...

Abstract This study compares the three-factor model (F&F model) proposed by Eugene Fama and Kenneth French with Daniel and Titman’s Characteristics Model (D&T model) using the data of Indian stock returns for the period of 25 years from 1993 to 2018. Three-way sorting (3 × 2 × 2) of stocks based on the B/M ratio and size of the firms, and then by SMB, HML, or ex-ante β loadings, is formulated to design thirty-six portfolios. Regression and rolling regression are applied to the data under study. Results obtained by the F&F model, despite its shortcomings, are found more conclusive than the D&T model for distinguishing between characteristics and covariances for returns on Indian stock. This study favors the F&F model over the D&T model.

Abstract The research work was commenced with an aim to document plant based drug recipes used by autochthonous practitioners against liver diseases in Multan region. The data was collected by interviews and semi-structured questionnaire from 43 traditional herbal practitioners. Recorded data was evaluated using the use value, relative frequency of citation (RFC), family importance value (FIV) and family use value (FUV). Total of 69 plant species belonging to 38 families were reported to be utilized to treat various liver disorders. The most important species regarding their use value were 3.0 for Polygonum bistorta, Citrus limon. It means that highly cited plants are more important in traditional medicines but this does not mean the plants low-citation plants by respondents are less medicinal important. It may be due to unavailability of plants in the area or lack of knowledge. Most of plant parts used were leaves due to ease of collection as compared to underground parts. One the basis family use value Asteraceae as the dominating or prominent family. These plants can be further investigated for allied pharmacological studies that will affect the socio-economical condition of the local community.

Abstract This paper reviews the literature on perishable food cold-chain management (FCCM) in order to assess its current state, pinpoint its knowledge gaps, and suggest a framework for addressing the issues faced by this industry. This work examines 103 academic articles on the topic of the perishable food supply chain published in various journals between 2001 and 2022. Research publications were selected from two reputed databases—Scopus and Web of Science. The study finds that the current trend in FCCM is toward sustainable FCCM, which offers financial, ecological, and social benefits. However, sustainable FCC practices are more common in wealthy nations but are still lacking in developing countries. High lead times, costs, waste, order returns, complaints, and dissatisfied consumers are the results of a fragmented market and the associated proliferation of chain intermediates. The authors have also developed a conceptual framework based on the findings that illustrates the interconnected nature of the food cold-chain facilities, collaboration among food cold-chain (FCC) stakeholders, concern among FCC stakeholders, economic enhancement, fulfilment of FCC stakeholders’ responsibilities, and overall functioning of the FCC. This study may be helpful to FCC professionals, food regulators, government authorities, and researchers because it gives a concise picture of the state of research in the field.

Abstract The study examines the development in the banking regulatory practices across BRICS nations over the period 2000–2019. The convergence and sustainability of the regulatory framework in BRICS nations to G7 norms have also been assessed. The analysis is based on five key regulatory measures, which include activity restrictions, entry requirements for a new bank, foreign bank entry restrictions, capital stringency, and deposit insurer powers. The study constructs the regulatory indexes based on the central bank responses to the Bank Regulation and Supervision Survey (BRSS) conducted by the World Bank. To estimate the indexes, the study follows Barth, Caprio, and Levine guidelines. The result reveals that the regulators of BRICS countries impose higher restrictions on bank activities than in the G7 nations. Furthermore, the United Kingdom and Brazilian bank regulators are more liberal and imposed fewer restrictions on insurance activity only. In addition, getting a bank license is tough in both regions. Regulators allow only fit and proper applicants into the banking domain. Furthermore, the authors find that the requirements for capital are becoming more restricted in BRICS nations between 2003 and 2019 to align with Basel capital accords, relative to G7 nations. The study documents a convergence in the banking licensing requirements, and limitations on foreign bank entry and official supervisory powers in the BRICS countries with the G7 nations. The study suggests that the regulators must offer freedom to banks’ activities with increasing supervision, and it boosts the competition in the banking sector and enhances customer welfare. Furthermore, the policymakers need to redesign the deposit insurance mechanism and equip deposit insurers with more powers to enhance the safety of depositors’ interests and minimize the moral hazards in the banking sector in both regions.
