Abstract Balancing part-time work and studies has become commonplace for university students in Canada and other countries where the costs of education have risen over time. While there is a substantial literature on the impacts of term-time work on studies, little has been written about campus employment programs, which are becoming more commonplace in North American universities. This paper addresses this gap by considering students' experiences in such a program at a western Canadian university. Focusing primarily on qualitative data from a longitudinal study, we examine the various reasons for the attractiveness of this program, which go beyond the promise of professional, career-related work experience. Our analysis draws on the academic literature on work-study roles, which examines whether term-time work has a more positive or negative effect on student outcomes as well as sociocultural literature that is more attentive to different contextual features of the work-study relationship. We find that university-sponsored jobs are highly valued by students for their workplace relationships, regulation, and flexibility. Positive relationships at work are facilitated by supervisors' recognition of students' academic priorities and opportunities to develop peer-support networks on campus. Other important features for students include the convenience of working where one studies, and the ability to build work schedules around academic schedules. However, the limited access to 'good' campus jobs raises concerns about equity.

Abstract Lentiviral accessory genes enhance replication through diverse mechanisms. HIV-1 accessory protein Vpr modulates the host DNA damage response (DDR) at multiple steps through DNA damage, cell cycle arrest, the degradation of host proteins, and both the activation and repression of DDR signaling. Vpr also alters host and viral transcription; however, the connection between Vpr-mediated DDR modulation and transcriptional activation remains unclear. Here, we determined the cellular consequences of Vpr-induced DNA damage using Vpr mutants that allow us to separate the ability of Vpr to induce DNA damage from cell cycle arrest and other DDR phenotypes including host protein degradation and repression of DDR. RNA-sequencing of cells expressing Vpr or Vpr mutants identified that Vpr alters cellular transcription through mechanisms both dependent and independent of cell cycle arrest. In tissue-cultured U2OS cells and primary human monocyte-derived macrophages (MDMs), Vpr-induced DNA damage activates the ATM-NEMO pathway and alters cellular transcription via NF-κB/RelA signaling. HIV-1 infection of primary MDMs validated Vpr-dependent NF-κB transcriptional activation during infection. Both virion delivered and

Abstract Joint replacements are among the most effective and most frequently performed surgeries in Canada. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are measurement instruments completed by patients about aspects of their health status, including pain and function. PROMs data from three provinces show that approximately nine in 10 patients report higher PROM scores after joint replacement surgery. These data can help identify factors that lead to better care and opportunities to further understand what contributes to a patient's perception of surgical success. Expanding the collection of PROMs to more patients and more provinces is needed to help healthcare planners and clinicians understand these important outcomes.

Abstract Venous in-stent restenosis is not completely understood, and the currently available treatment is usually unsatisfactory. We describe the cases of two patients treated with the RevCore thrombectomy system (Inari Medical), designed for venous in-stent thrombosis. Case 1 involves a 62-year-old woman with post-thrombotic syndrome from iliac vein stent placement 15 years earlier. Case 2 describes a 30-year-old woman with post-thrombotic syndrome from recurrent iliac vein stent occlusion, despite therapeutic anticoagulation. Both patients had previous recanalization attempts at outside facilities that were unsuccessful. The RevCore system was safe and feasible in these initial cases, and more studies are warranted.

Abstract Chronic wounds are defined as wounds that fail to proceed through the normal phases of wound healing in an orderly and timely manner. The most common and inevitable impairment to wound healing is the installation of an infection, usually in the case of chronic wounds. Therefore, the objective of the present review was to identify the importance of copper nanoparticles in dressings for wound healing. Nanoparticles such as silver, gold and copper combat infectious processes through the inhibition of protein synthesis, peroxidation of the cell membrane and destroying the nucleic acids of bacteria and viruses. Among bioactive nanoparticles, copper plays a complex role in various cells, it modulates several cytokines and growth factor mechanisms of action and is essentially involved in all stages of the wound healing process. More importantly, copper plays a key role in skin regeneration and angiogenesis and accelerates the healing process through induction of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and angiogenesis by hypoxia-induced factor-1-alpha (HIF-1α) action where copper enhances HIF-1α expression and HIF-1α binding to the critical motifs in the promoter and putative enhancer regions of HIF-1-regulated genes.

Abstract Background: Although several studies have documented the detrimental impacts of global COVID-19 containment measures on individuals with Alzheimer's disease and dementia, a comprehensive analysis of mortality rates for these conditions within the Chilean population is notably lacking. This study aimed to analyze the impact of COVID-19 on mortality rates among individuals with dementia and Alzheimer's disease in Chile.
Methods: A retrospective longitudinal cross-sectional study was conducted, considering mortality data for specific mental health conditions during the pre-pandemic and pandemic contexts of COVID-19 in Chile. Quantile regression techniques were employed to analyze the existence of differences between the two periods, while non-observable heterogeneity models for panel data methods were used to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 mortality on crude mortality rates.
Findings: Statistically significant differences were observed in the number of deaths from dementia and Alzheimer's disease between the pre-pandemic and COVID-19 pandemic periods. Specifically, crude mortality rates decreased by 10% (-0.10 [95% CI: -0.16, -0.05]) during the pandemic period. Furthermore, the number of deaths from COVID-19 during the pandemic period has a very weak incidence of deaths from mental health conditions such as dementia and Alzheimer's. Specifically, a unit percentage increase in confirmed cases from COVID-19 would result in a 7% (-0.07 [95% CI: -0.13, -0.001]) decrease in the number of deaths from dementia and Alzheimer's. These findings are supported by the application of panel regression with one-way random effects models.
Interpretation: The study findings indicate a reduction in mortality rates attributed to dementia and Alzheimer's disease during the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile. This decline could be attributed to the potential underreporting of mental illness as the cause of death during the pandemic period. Several studies have highlighted that approximately 30% of death certificates fail to document the presence of a dementia syndrome. Moreover, the cause of death recorded for individuals with mental health conditions may be influenced by the physician's familiarity with the patient or reflect the prevailing approach to managing end-stage dementia patients.

Abstract Oxidative stress is associated with several acute and chronic disorders, including hematological malignancies such as acute myeloid leukemia, the most prevalent acute leukemia in adults. Xenobiotics are usually harmless compounds that may be detrimental, such as pharmaceuticals, environmental pollutants, cosmetics, and even food additives. The storage of xenobiotics can serve as a defense mechanism or a means of bioaccumulation, leading to adverse effects. During the absorption, metabolism, and cellular excretion of xenobiotics, three steps may be distinguished: (i) inflow by transporter enzymes, (ii) phases I and II, and (iii) phase III. Phase I enzymes, such as those in the cytochrome P450 superfamily, catalyze the conversion of xenobiotics into more polar compounds, contributing to an elevated acute myeloid leukemia risk. Furthermore, genetic polymorphism influences the variability and susceptibility of related myeloid neoplasms, infant leukemias associated with mixed-lineage leukemia (

Abstract Chronic venous insufficiency, caused by inferior vena cava occlusion, can lead to thromboembolic complications and tissue loss. We present two cases of azygos vein stenting (AVS) in which vena cava recanalization techniques were exhausted. In the first case, the left iliac vein and vena cava were recanalized and stented; however, the right iliac vein had been previously resected and required AVS. Conventional recanalization attempts from the right and left iliac systems failed in the second patient with congenital inferior vena cava occlusion; therefore, AVS was chosen to establish in-line drainage.

Abstract Background: People with chronic diseases in their advanced phase require palliative care. This is essential to ensure their quality of life as it ends. However, a very low percentage of patients receive the necessary palliative care. The COVID-19 pandemic has adversely affected the planning and provision of palliative care. Despite this, in Chile, palliative care coverage was extended by law to cover nononcological chronic diseases. Implementation of this law is expected to be a significant challenge in terms of material resources, as well as the need for the formation of specialized palliative care teams. Therefore, it is essential to estimate the need for palliative care for all chronic diseases to generate useful input for planning and decision-making in public health.
Objectives: To indirectly estimate the need for palliative care among people with Chronic Oncological Diseases (COD) and Chronic Non-Oncological Diseases (CNOD) during the prepandemic and pandemic context due to COVID-19 in the Biobío Region in Chile.
Methods: Cross-sectional study based on mortality data from chronic oncological and nononcological diseases during the prepandemic (2010-2018) and pandemic (2020-2021) contexts due to COVID-19 in a Region of Chile through indirect estimation using minimal estimate, standardized mortality rates and geographically weighted regression.
Results: It was estimated that 76.25% of deaths from chronic diseases in the Biobío Region would have required palliative care, which represents 77,618 people who should have been included in these health benefits. The pandemic had a significant effect on the average number of deaths from CNOD. People belonging to this group were more likely to die from COVID-19 than from their baseline disease, unlike the deaths of people from COD, where no significant changes were observed.
Conclusion: These estimates highlight the potential size of the population requiring palliative care and emphasize the importance of recognizing the rights of individuals with COD and CNOD conditions. It is evident that there is a significant demand for palliative care services, as well as a pressing need for adequate resources, effective management, and strategic planning to cater to the needs of this population. This is particularly crucial in the heavily impacted areas and communes of the Biobío Region, Chile.
