    Abstract Background: Continuing education is important for the quality of clinical practice because it complements it and focuses primarily on producing qualified pre-hospital nurses with operationally defined competence in nursing standards. The objective of this study was to assess pre-hospital nurses' opinion of the impact of professional development sessions on their clinical practice.
    Method: A descriptive and quantitative study was carried out involving Portuguese pre-hospital nurses. Six professional development sessions were presented in 2020 to pre-hospital registered nurses in four of Portugal's main cities. To collect the data, at the end of each session, we apply a questionnaire designed specifically for this study. This data collection instrument consists of 11 questions, six designed to evaluate the session and five designed to evaluate the trainer responsible for the session. A five-point Likert scale was used for each question, where 1 corresponds to very dissatisfied and 5 to extremely satisfied.
    Results: Two hundred and two nurses, which represents 55% of all Portuguese pre-hospital nurses, took part in the assessment of the professional development sessions. The nurses were from the Northern region of Portugal (51%;
    Conclusion: The professional development sessions provide pre-hospital nurses with the latest research findings and the majority of nurses considered that the training had a huge impact on their clinical practice. However, it is important that future research aims to explore the cause-effect relationship between training and improved clinical practice.

    Abstract Objective: to identify toddlers' eating habits.
    Method: a cross-sectional study of quantitative analysis, with a sample of 808 toddlers who attended day care centers in the district of Viseu, Portugal, between November 2018 and September 2019. Data were collected using a questionnaire directed at parents.
    Results: the prevalence of children who ate six meals a day was 42.8%, and 42.5%, those who ate five meals. It was found that 2.0% of children consumed chocolates, 1.0%, desserts, and 0.4%, carbonated beverages, daily. On average, dairy product (M=5.61; SD=2.62) and meat/fish/egg (M=4.80; SD=3.57) consumption was higher than recommended, while fat (M=0.48; SD=0.40), legume (M=0.49; SD=0.45), vegetable (M=1.18; SD=0.87) and water (M=0 .51; SD=0.29) consumption was lower.
    Conclusions: there was a higher or lower consumption than recommended for some foods, highlighting the need to implement nursing intervention programs aimed at promoting healthy eating habits in toddlers and families.

    Abstract Coactivator-associated arginine methyltransferase 1 (CARM1) is an arginine methyltransferase that posttranslationally modifies proteins that regulate multiple levels of RNA production and processing. Its substrates include histones, transcription factors, coregulators of transcription, and splicing factors. CARM1 is overexpressed in many different cancer types, and often promotes transcription factor programs that are co-opted as drivers of the transformed cell state, a process known as transcription factor addiction. Targeting these oncogenic transcription factor pathways is difficult but could be addressed by removing the activity of the key coactivators on which they rely. CARM1 is ubiquitously expressed, and its KO is less detrimental in embryonic development than deletion of the arginine methyltransferases protein arginine methyltransferase 1 and protein arginine methyltransferase 5, suggesting that therapeutic targeting of CARM1 may be well tolerated. Here, we will summarize the normal in vivo functions of CARM1 that have been gleaned from mouse studies, expand on the transcriptional pathways that are regulated by CARM1, and finally highlight recent studies that have identified oncogenic properties of CARM1 in different biological settings. This review is meant to kindle an interest in the development of human drug therapies targeting CARM1, as there are currently no CARM1 inhibitors available for use in clinical trials.

    Abstract This research aimed to explore the direct and indirect effects of students' school engagement, school climate and parenting practices on youth's externalizing behaviors. A quantitative methodology with a sample of 183 Portuguese students, aged between 11 and 16 years old, was used. The main results suggested negative associations between externalizing behaviors and higher levels of school engagement and positive school climate. Poor parental supervision, inconsistent discipline and corporal punishment were positively related with externalizing behaviors, contrary to parental involvement and positive parenting that were associated with lower levels of externalizing behaviors. However, negative parenting practices were associated with lower levels of school engagement. Additionally, the results indicated that parenting practices might influence youth's externalizing behaviors through school engagement.

    Abstract The objective of this study was to analyze the expression and prognostic role of the tight junction protein occludin in high-grade serous carcinoma (HGSC). Occludin protein expression by immunohistochemistry was analyzed in 602 HGSC (417 effusions, 185 surgical specimens). Expression in mesothelioma (n = 87; 45 effusions, 42 surgical specimens) was studied for comparative purposes. Occludin protein expression was found in 587/602 (98%) HGSC vs. 40/87 (46%) mesotheliomas and was predominantly limited to < 5% of cells in the latter (p < 0.001). Occludin was additionally overexpressed in HGSC effusions compared to surgical specimens (p < 0.001) and was overexpressed in post-chemotherapy effusions compared to chemo-naive effusions tapped at diagnosis (p = 0.015). Occludin expression in HGSC surgical specimens was associated with poor chemoresponse (p < 0.001) and primary resistance (p = 0.001). Expression in effusions and surgical specimens was unrelated to survival (p > 0.05). In conclusion, occludin expression is higher in HGSC compared to mesothelioma, and this protein is overexpressed in HGSC effusions, possibly reflecting changes in adhesion related to anchorage-independent growth in this microenvironment. Overexpression in post-chemotherapy compared to chemo-naïve effusions suggest a role in disease progression. Occludin expression in surgical specimens may be related to chemoresistance.

    Abstract In vineyards to control phylloxera (Daktulosphaira vitifolia Ficth) attacks in Vitis vinifera L., heterografted vines are planted using American vines hybrids as rootstocks. However, graft incompatibilities can affect grape yield and plant longevity. Thus, to identify early graft incompatibility factors, we established in vitro micrografting protocols coupled with histology and histochemistry analysis in grapevine graft combinations of known compatibility behavior. The histochemical characterization of the graft union revealed irregular cell arrangement, slower vascular differentiation, persistence of the necrotic layer, accumulation of starch, and lower differentiation of phloem cells in hetero- compared to homografts, indicating the presence of translocated incompatibility symptoms. We highlight the utility of evaluating the graft interface cellular arrangement and starch content via calcofluor and I₂KI staining, respectively, as allowed to identify the graft combinations with lower graft success. Wounded and grafted Syrah plantlets pointed out an impaired sucrose distribution in these plants and levels of Grapevine Rupestris Stem Pitting associated Virus (GRSPaV) infections correlated with graft (un)-success in two Syrah clones micrografted onto 110-Ritcher rootstock. Furthermore, silencing GRSPaV before grafting increased graft success rates. We propose that grapevine graft incompatibility is mainly a virus-induced phenomenon that can arise even in certified plants.

    Abstract This study assessed attitudes toward patient-centred care, empathy, assertiveness, and subjective perception of communication skills and technical knowledge among Portuguese undergraduate students in healthcare. These students may develop rehabilitation activities with patients in their person-oriented or technique-oriented professions. Portuguese nursing and allied health students from two public higher education schools completed questionnaires in the first and third academic years: Patient-Practitioner Orientation Scale, Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy, Scale for Interpersonal Behaviour, and a subjective perception of technical knowledge and communication skills. A total of 183 students completed the surveys. In the first year, students showed moderate to high scores on patient-centredness attitudes, empathy, and assertiveness and perceived themselves as having good communication skills. Students from person-oriented programmes significantly improved their Total and shared patient-centred attitudes in the third year compared with students attending technique-oriented professions. Significant differences in empathy were found between groups in the third year. Distress associated with assertive behaviours increased significantly across time in students from technique-oriented programmes compared with their peers in person-oriented programmes. The results suggest that the health profession's orientation and the programmes' specific curriculum might have a role in how some dimensions evolved in the two groups of students. The increasing assertiveness-related discomfort highlighted the importance of assessing and monitoring students' emotional wellbeing during their initial interactions with patients.

    Abstract Objectives: to describe Nurses' perception of the Nursing Process and its relationship with leadership.
    Methods: action research conducted between September/2021 and April/2022 with nurses from a medium-sized hospital in southern Brazil. The data investigated, one of the stages of the method, was collected using the Focus Group technique and submitted to Strategic Focus Analysis.
    Results: three categories emerged from the organized and analyzed data, namely: Nursing Process: a tool that qualifies nursing care; Conditions that weaken the Nursing Process; and Strategies that enhance the Systematization of Nursing Care.
    Final considerations: the perception of the Nursing Process and its relationship with leadership are not always understood as complementary themes. Although they recognize that the Nursing Process is sometimes imposed as normative, nurses do not perceive the importance of the role of the leader, who is considered a key player in conducting and boosting the Systematization of Nursing Care.
