Abstract Milk is renowned for its nutritional richness but also serves as a remarkable reservoir of bioactive compounds, particularly milk proteins and their derived peptides. Recent studies have showcased several robust antiviral activities of these proteins, evidencing promising potential within zoonotic viral diseases. While several publications focus on milk's bioactivities, antiviral peptides remain largely neglected in reviews. This knowledge is critical for identifying novel research directions and analyzing potential nutraceuticals within the One Health context. Our review aims to gather the existing scientific information on milk-derived antiviral proteins and peptides against several zoonotic viral diseases, and their possible mechanisms. Overall, in-depth research has increasingly revealed them as a promising and novel strategy against viruses, principally for those constituting a plausible pandemic threat. The underlying mechanisms of the bioactivity of milk's proteins include inhibiting viral entry and attachment to the host cells, blocking replication, or even viral inactivation via peptide-membrane interactions. Their marked versatility and effectiveness stand out compared to other antiviral peptides and can support future research and development in the post-COVID-19 era. Overall, our review helps to emphasize the importance of potentially effective milk-derived peptides, and their significance for veterinary and human medicines, along with the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and dairy industry.

Abstract Background: Gluteus medius (GM) is a segmented muscle involving three muscular subdivisions. Rehabilitation exercises has been suggested to strengthen specific subdivisions.
Objective: This study aimed to evaluate muscular activation of the anterior, middle, and posterior subdivisions of the GM during two different exercises.
Methods: A total of 28 healthy active subjects participated in this study. Muscle activity using surface electromyography was recorded for the three GM subdivisions during figure-of-four position (FFP) and wall press (WP). Non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test was used to detect differences between GM subdivisions on each exercise and the Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare muscular activation across exercises.
Results: There were statistically significant differences (P< 0.001) in all GM subdivision during FFP and WP exercises. Both exercises showed greater activation of the posterior subdivision than the middle and anterior subdivisions, with the WP causing highest activation of the posterior subdivision.
Conclusion: In line with the WP exercise, the FFP produces sufficient activity to provide potential strength gains on the posterior subdivision and could be a viable option to include in the early stages of the rehabilitation process. Clinicians may use this information to make more informed decisions about exercise selection for strengthening specific GM subdivision.

Abstract Recent research has uncovered rapid compositional and structural reorganization of ecological assemblages, with these changes particularly evident in marine ecosystems. However, the extent to which these ongoing changes in taxonomic diversity are a proxy for change in functional diversity is not well understood. Here we focus on trends in rarity to ask how taxonomic rarity and functional rarity covary over time. Our analysis, drawing on 30 years of scientific trawl data, reveals that the direction of temporal shifts in taxonomic rarity in two Scottish marine ecosystems is consistent with a null model of change in assemblage size (i.e. change in numbers of species and/or individuals). In both cases, however, functional rarity increases, as assemblages become larger, rather than showing the expected decrease. These results underline the importance of measuring both taxonomic and functional dimensions of diversity when assessing and interpreting biodiversity change.

Abstract Rationale & aims: Pancreatic cancer (PC) is the third most common type of gastrointestinal tract cancer in Europe and the fourth leading cause of death by cancer. Its initial stage is asymptomatic Therefore, the diagnosis tends to be late leading to locally advanced stages that presuppose late and debilitating symptoms, which consequently makes the Nutritional Status (NS) get worse. The weight loss (WL), malnutrition, and oncologic cachexia, which are quite prevalent in PC patients, reflect a poor prognosis. We aimed to track and evaluate the NS and Functional Status (FS) of PC patients (hospitalized patients - HP and Day Hospital patients - DHP) and associate NS with symptoms with nutritional impact and FS.
Methods: Observational cohort study in PC patients from Garcia de Orta Hospital. NS was tracked and evaluated using Nutritional Risk Screening (NRS-2002) and Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). To assess FS we used the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), Karnofsky Performance Scale Index (KPSI) and Handgrip Dynamometer (HGD).
Results: 41 PC patients (30-HP and 11-DHP). 29 patients in stage IV of the tumor. 24 with a WL >10% in the last 6 months. 37 manifest symptoms with nutritional impact. 30 to 34 malnourished according to the GLIM criteria and PG-SGA, respectively. 11 in ECOG level 2 and corresponding KPSI, 10 in level 3 and 8 in level 4. 28 patients had a value of HGD below the 10th percentile. NRS-2002, PG-SGA and GLIM criteria were positively correlated with the symptoms (p < 0.01), % WL (p < 0.01) and ECOG (p < 0.01) and negatively correlated with HGS (p < 0.05 - NRS-2002; p < 0.01 - PG-SGA and GLIM criteria).
Conclusions: PC patients manifest debilitating symptoms with nutritional impact, namely severe WL and anorexia, which in turn lead to deterioration of the NS and FS. It is an oncology population with high nutritional risk and a higher prevalence of malnutrition, associated with severe % WL and symptoms and a sharp decline in FS.

Abstract Background: Unhealthful dietary patterns have been consistently associated with low levels of physical activity (PA), but studies dedicated to sedentary behavior (SB) are scarce, especially in adults. The few studies that investigated the association between SB and dietary patterns focused mostly on specific types of SB, such as TV-watching or screen time. SB can be accumulated in distinct domains (i.e., work, transport, and leisure-time), thus, it is key to investigate in depth the impact that different domains of SB can have on eating-related indicators. We aimed to investigate the associations between different SB domains and eating-related indicators, in a sample of adults.
Methods: Cross-sectional data from students, teachers, and staff from a Portuguese University was collected in November/2021 through an anonymous online survey. Data analyses were performed using the IBM SPSS software (version 28.0) and included descriptive statistics, partial correlations, and group comparisons using one-way ANOVA. Daily average SB at work/study, transport, and in leisure-time were self-reported and eating-related indicators were measured with several items from the Mediterranean Diet Score. Specific eating-related behaviors reflecting a protective eating pattern (e.g., eating breakfast regularly), and eating behavior traits (e.g., external eating) were also assessed. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated as weight (kg)/height(m)
Results: The sample included 301 adults (60.1% women), with a mean age of 34.5 years. Overall, leisure-time SB was inversely associated with adherence to the Mediterranean diet (r = -0.20; p < 0.001) and with a protective eating profile (r = -0.31; p < 0.001). Higher transport SB was also related to lower adherence to the Mediterranean diet (r = -0.20; p < 0.001) and to an unhealthier eating profile (r = -0.22; p < 0.001), but no associations were found for work-related SB (p > 0.05). These results persisted after the adjustment for BMI, sex, and self-reported PA. These results were impacted by the age tertile.
Conclusions: Our findings suggest that adults with higher levels of SB in leisure-time and transport domains tend to report less healthy eating-related behaviors, irrespective of BMI, sex, and PA level. However, some differences in these associations were found according to the age tertile. This information may assist public health authorities in focusing their efforts in augmenting literacy on SB, namely on how SB can be accumulated via different settings. Furthermore, public health literacy efforts need to extend besides the more known deleterious effects of SB on health (e.g., diabetes, cardiovascular disease), to also include the interplay with eating indicators. Strategies to reduce SB and unhealthy eating should be particularly focused on promoting physically active forms of commuting and reducing SB in the leisure setting.

Abstract Background: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease characterized by multisystem inflammation and is a common cause of pericarditis and pericardial effusion, but significant pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade are rare and even rarer as the first manifestation.
Case summary: We report the case of a young male who presented with fever, recurrent pericarditis, and polyserositis with pericardial and bilateral pleural effusion. On examination, he was haemodynamically unstable and the pericardial effusion had considerable dimensions and an urgent pericardiocentesis was performed. Antinuclear antibody with a speckled pattern was positive, complement C4 levels were low, and the remaining autoimmunity and infectious study was unremarkable. Considering the European League Against Rheumatism/American College of Rheumatology classification criteria for SLE, a score of 11 points was obtained, confirming the diagnosis of SLE.
Discussion: This case report illustrates a rare form of presentation of SLE, in which the first manifestation was pericarditis with polyserositis and cardiac tamponade.
