Abstract Mechanisms of innate immunity contribute to inflammation, one of the major underlying causes of atherogenesis and progression of atherosclerotic vessel disease. How immune cells exactly contribute to atherosclerosis and interact with molecules of cholesterol homeostasis is still a matter of intense research. Recent evidence has proposed a potential role of previously underappreciated cell types in this chronic disease including platelets and dendritic cells (DCs). The pathophysiology of atherosclerosis is studied in models with dysfunctional lipid homeostasis and several druggable molecular targets are derived from these models. Specific therapeutic approaches focussing on these immune mechanisms, however, have not been successfully introduced into everyday clinical practice, yet. This review highlights molecular insights into immune processes related to atherosclerosis and potential future translational approaches targeting these molecular mechanisms.

Abstract In visual search, attention is reliably captured by salient distractors and must be actively disengaged from them to reach the target. In such attentional capture paradigms, dwell time is measured on distractors that appear in the periphery (e.g., on a random location on a circle). Distractor-related dwell time is typically thought to be largely due to stimulus-driven processes related to oculomotor capture dynamics. However, the extent to which oculomotor capture and oculomotor disengagement contribute to distractor dwell time has not been known because standard attentional capture paradigms cannot decouple these processes. In the present study, we used a novel paradigm combining classical attentional capture trials and delayed disengagement trials. We measured eye movements to dissociate the capture and disengagement mechanisms underlying distractor dwell time. We found that only two-thirds of distractor dwell time (~ 52 ms) can be explained by oculomotor capture, while one-third is explained by oculomotor disengagement (~ 18 ms), which has been neglected or underestimated in previous studies. Thus, oculomotor disengagement (goal-directed) processes play a more significant role in distractor dwell times than previously thought.

Abstract Bentheim Sandstone is considered a suitable conventional georeservoir rock even at great depth because of its mineral composition, homogeneity, micro- and macrostructure, and is also used as a reference material in rock deformation tests. However, a full characterization of the permeability at representative depths has never been performed. Here we report new experimental data where the permeability of Bentheim Sandstone is measured both with a simultaneous variation and with a sequential variation of three different variables to simulate georeservoir conditions. The results indicate a decrease in permeability with simulated increasing depth until 2-3 km, followed by a partial permeability recovery until 4-5 km depth. During the exhumation path, initially, permeability is unaffected, but at shallow depths, a sharp increase in permeability is observed, likely due to microcracking. These variations are a consequence of a complex interaction between stress, pore pressure and temperature, highlighting the importance of experiments considering all three variables when studying the evolution of permeability at depth. These results will aid with the accurate estimation of permeability at different georeservoir conditions.

    Title translation Terrible triad injuries.
Abstract The complex injury pattern of a posterior elbow dislocation with concomitant radial head and coronoid fractures is usually referred to as a terrible triad injury. Due to the concomitant compromise of several osteoligamentous structures of the elbow joint relevant for stability, these injuries pose a particularly major challenge to the treating trauma surgeons. For this reason, a careful preoperative analysis of all relevant injury components is mandatory in order to make an adequate treatment decision. In most cases, surgical treatment addressing all elements relevant for stability is necessary to achieve a stable and congruent elbow joint. Only this enables early functional follow-up treatment and minimizes the complication rate. Delayed or even insufficient treatment with persistent (sub)dislocation must be avoided at all costs, otherwise there is a high risk of serious posttraumatic functional disorders of the elbow with rapid progression of osteoarthritis.
